Uh, no-one I know has to know I've been driving a BMW Z4, do they? I'm afraid I have an irrational hatred of the darned things - moreso than the Z3 M-Coupe.

You're a very nice person sjaak, but this is going to test me. :sly:

I assume settings are fully open, anything you want? Are we allowed to discuss them here?

Give it a try,you will love it 👍

And yes ,you can discuss the settings here as much as you want.:)

Looks like fun, I may have to give this a go... Assuming I find the time but I doubt that will be a problem. :D
Just one question... By "all other power upgrades" what exactly is meant?
I suppose that means everything (NA3, race exhaust, etc etc)?

Cool, back when I've finished a lap. Till then,

Yes Kent, everything you can buy which give a BHP of 439 :)

As mentioned, this (others might say irrational) intense dislike of the Z4 has led to drastic measures. So, I've enlisted the help of 'Bob'. Bob is a nice bloke, thin as a rake, no kids, early 30s, drives cars a lot. I told him about the WRS and he said, yeah, okay, I'll give that a shot. So Bob pointed out a 'Merlot Red' Z4 in the dealership, ticked all the boxes in the M-sport 'make this car go quick' options boxes (including the stiffening pack), picked out a set of gold BBS crossspoke rims, added some racing hards, and scratched his head over some settings.

A little while later, he shipped the car to Trial Mountain, donned his orange flashed overalls and red&black helmet and went to work. Look, I took a photo:

Here's what Bob said after his first run: "I like the gearknob."

Man of few words, Bob. Unlike me, of course. After some more cajoling, Bob recited his split times and settings.

T1: 17.102
T2: 46.083
T3: 1:08.302

Susp: 6.3 / 5.3
RH: 120 / 120
Dampers 7 all around
Camber 2.0 / 0.8
Toe 0 / 0
ARBs: 3 / 3

No driver aids. (Bob ceremonially burns the fuses of ASM modules in a little crucible he keeps in his toolbox.)

Gears, stock autoset 12 as fitted, FDR = 3.200

LSD: Init 10, acc 30, dec 20.

Bob thinks the car is a little skittish. We talked about the sfter setup, and Bob thinks that tall and soft is the way to go, especially with so many transverse ridges, lumps and bumps in the track. However, he's not happy, is Bob. He likened it to stroking a nasty cat - you stroke it very carefully all the time, but you're never quite sure if it's going to claw your face off. Bob doesn't like cats much either.

Bob doesn't want to drive the car much until he can eliminate the skittishness and high speed understeer. Finding a setting on the LSD whihc allows full power in third with some steering lock wouldn't go amiss either.

Any help (for Bob) much appreciated. :D

Bob would like to add that he really likes that gearknob.

V. (And Bob.)

great! gt mode - beamer - racetyres - a favvie track. much more fun for me this week than last :) :) :)

well - off to gtvault for a decent setup and on to the gt station 👍 👍 👍

as usual, a third t's posting will win a swift luxy init from me.

Z4? I hate BMWs!:grumpy:
Ah well, suppose I could give it a try. And you know, Bob is right, it really does have a nice gearknob.👍

Will probably try this out tonight ... but me and GT mode are not very compatiable :ouch: .. In for a penny and in for a pound though :sly: 👍

Bob likes the gearknob so much it's scary. Watch the replay. :sly:

Just did a quickie, very nice. 👍

Default settings except all aids set to zero

Wow, after seeing Venari's and HolyVolvo's comments I'm almost afraid to mention that I've got an '03 Z4 3.0 in my driveway :scared:.

If only driving one in real life would give me some sort of advantage

Awesome!!

GT mode in a BM!

I'm at work tonight so I'll get a few decent lap times, (Yes! At Work!) ;) :D

Nothing personal, 2078TM, I just don't like the styling. I know they're a very capable car. I just dislike them in the same way I hate bananas, and can't stand celery. :yuck:

Luckily, this world is big enough for us all to have our opinions, and more than friendly enough (most of the time) for us respect others'. :)

Very heavy car for such a small one! .. and here's my best splits after a few laps that wrecked my 115 result :dunce:

16.0 / 44.1 / 1'05.4 ... loads left with tweaking and more effort!

Gutted about my 115 blunder :guilty:

I am waiting for Kyle to back from his trip so he can give me some of his settings, sim mode and I don't see eye to eye. Last weeks race was one of the best I've done in a long time, top 5 in my book :), I just may pull it out at Bobkarts next month 👍

After a few hours at work last night, messing about with all the different settings...

T1 = 17.145
T2 = 45.603
T3 = 1'08.054

They will improve before submission.

Edit: Click for New Splits!!

new leaderboard set and updated to post 31.

the car feels like an american softie with no brakes and tyres that have been sold for racers but were actually souped up n3's :yuck: so why not put up a wing, sjaak :sly:
i tried the trick of someone from gtvault who said that all default setups and settings for beamers were perfect as they are, but apparently this doesnt apply for the hairdresser's bmw.
oh well, i better start putting some hours into this one as the mountain is one of my favvie tracks.

EDIT first efforts gave a sluggish 17.843-47.361-1.10.127 but once i've found a proper setup (damn those brakes) it'll get better i hope.

BTW venari: thanks for the setup, but what did you or bob do to the brakes? i tried 3/3 and (gtvault) 11/9 and currently i'm even on 17/17 but that's no good either ... any help would be welcome & appreciated.

Steven,can I give some tips?

Seeing you struggling with the combo's week after week pulls the tears in my eyes.;)

First ditch GT vault for ever, yes for ever  ,go back to the stock setting.
Adjust the gears for the long straight, put TCS to 1,ASM 0 and drive some laps.

After that, set understeer to 1 and do again some laps.
From this point it is possible to get tiny changes on the car.
Improving then stick to it,getting slower times go back.
GT4 did a really good job with stock settings other then GT3.

Use your ghost to see where time is to gain and where time is lost.
Focus on that.
Also try to remember the speed when you exciting corners.

For the braking points,I don't know if you drive bumper cam but if you do, you will see the red gear number you currently driving.
When it is going up and down, brake.
If you do that, you slowed enough to attack the corner.

Also braking into a corner is most of the times a drama.
Just brake, release, steer in,hit the gas, is for production cars the best, but some exercise is needed.:)

Last thing I want to say, build your lap times .
Start with cruising, just to know the car, don't go after the splits you see over here.
Times will drop rapidly and now it is time to set goals.
Braking that second or half a second.

Finally, your ghost ,that's all what matters.

Beat ta ass!

Brakes: Started at 10/8 but I could hear the tyre chatter, so I think I'm at 8/6 now.

Will go back to stock settings (except brakes/gears/aids) and try again. :)

Edit: Mostly stock settings:

T1: 0:16.716
T2: 0:45.123
T3: 1:06.927

With one of the most marginal berm hops over the initial chicane I might post a photo for a laugh.

Not much practice for me now, I'm :censored:ing (method of transport) to 🤬 (a foreign country) to look at a new £🤬-million piece of equipment that can 🤬 a 🤬 in 🤬 seconds at a range of 🤬. And if you figure out what any of that means, I have a friend called Jack in the States who might come around to your house (within 24 hours) and make you forget.

Sweet dreams! :sly:

Echo on Sjaak's advice on how to approach a week of racing GT Mode at the WRS. I do the same thing... +rep for that. 👍

Steven, can I give some tips? Seeing you struggling with the combo's week after week pulls the tears in my eyes.
well thanks. you bring tears to me eyes :scared:
actually it's not that bad. i enjoy participating in wrs and continue to do so, tho it sometimes is sour that i see no or little improvement over all those months.
thanks bigtime for the advice and the gesture, it means a lot to me. i'll dive into it right away.
reps from me to!

Plenty of opportunities to screw up a lap on this track. Getting everything right in the same lap is unlikely. I'll be shooting for minimizing my mistakes. Splits from best lap so far...

Ive had the brakes up to 20 and 19 to see what happened, and found exactly what Venari pointed out: brake chatter, or the sound your tyres make when your ABS is working IRL.

To find the sweet spot, i lowered down to 10/9 and it worx for me. Ive always had the brakes set one higher at the front, and usually 4/3 worx, but this sucker refuses to stop... to be continued...

What needs to be remembered is that all aspects of the setup affect each other.
For example, if you have the brakes set high up the scale, they are going to try to stop the car faster, but if your ride height is high, then the car will nose dive when you have strong brakes, causing the back end to raise and lose grip. This means turning into a corner while even dabbing the brake when theyre set up high will give you a slide.
In turn, having the gearbox set a certain way will affect the way the car accelerates out of the turn, so this must be addressed too.
I have personally always taken a car to the fastest point on the circuit, made a mental note of the top speed required, then tuned the gearbox to reach that speed in as short a time as possible and nothing higher. I will always do this first, then concentrate on the handling.

Ive found so far that this car doesnt like to be high up on this track, and also likes to be softer on the nose to give me better control in and out of turns.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember though, is that each setup of a car is for that particular driver, and may be found to be awful to handle to another person.

Ive managed a 16.something, 44.something and 1'06.something so far, (all slower than Mr.P's 👍)but need much more time at this to even find a line, its such a long time since i drove the mountain backwards.

My advice for tuning is:

Have the front springs softer than the rears, low values all across the suspension, the stabilizers same as the springs, keep the car low in terms of height, but higher at the ass than the nose (yeah i know-where's the logic?) and one of the biggest differences i found was sticking the toe at -3/3. (she was understeering like mad till i did this, so if youre oversteering, ignore me!)
She doesnt like camber, and any changes you do make, try them out, then decide you shouldnt have done that.

Remember, your settings are for you, and might not be for everyone, depends how you drive. If i always released the throttle before i braked, then my brake ratings wouldnt work for me, but because i use a DFP and use both pedals at once, they are what I need them set at.

I always drive with no aids at all, unless we're racing the superbird/charger, and i dont like LSD's much, so havent bought one for this car, i know i will lose time because of the lack of grip, but i will enjoy the drive more, so its worth it for me.

Good luck to all this week, i will be back with some proper splits at some point.

:irked:👍

Some great advice from Vexd & Sjaak! 👍

A few more hours last night...

T1 - 16.909
T2 - 45.361
T3 - 1'07.799

I'm gonna try again using the advice from you guys and see what I can come up with.

Edit: Click for New Splits!!

this is to vexd and especially to sjaak.   and also

i dont think any advice helped as much as this. it really feels like up to now i've been a complete :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

first improvements: 17.391 - 46.800 - 1.09.446 - laptime minus 1.3

current setup: aids 0-0-1, lsd 5-15-5, auto 9, brakes 10/9, soft suspension settings.

For the braking points,I don't know if you drive bumper cam but if you do, you will see the red gear number you currently driving. When it is going up and down, brake. If you do that, you slowed enough to attack the corner.
this really helps bigtime. i always use the baby cam but even there the figure starts flashing at the braking point. if i use that i can (almost) enter a corner without further braking and miracles happen. fantastic!

First set of splits:

16.434
44.819
1:06.871

No aids, brakes at (I think) 9/7, suspension lowered, rear stiffened a bit (springs and roll bar), camber to 3/2. Started with springs at 11/11, but have been softening bit by bit which does seem quicker as well as making the front relatively softer than the rear to dial out understeer.

Ideally, I want to be able to ride the first chicane curbs aggressively without being too soft for the rest of the lap so we'll see how soft is too soft.

Shifting at redline or slightly beyond also appears to be quicker than shifting at the rev limiter

FGR - Auto 9, 1/0/0 TCS Settings, bone stock settings otherwise got a 1:06 .1....we'll see, I have some time this weekend to trim that sucker down I hope
