GT4 WRS week 116 : BMW Z4 '03 @ Trial Mountain Reverse

I can run with you folks through the first two sectors, 16.3/44.5 or so, but I'm getting killed in sector 3, still in the mid 1:06's. I'll keep hacking away and see what I come up with. Thanks for all the setup info everyone, it will give me someting to try.

Try to cut the corner at the end of the back straight so you just (and i mean just) miss the right hand wall on the inside going into the tunnel.... then stay right, and come down a gear, imagining the exit of the left turn, and narrowly miss the rox on the left to get a good speed out, then hit the brakes sharp, and come down maybe even to second, and just miss the rox on the left again to get a good T3.

Its about driving the same line you would if we were doing Trial Mountain Normal, but in reverse!

For example: Try to drive the ring with a NO-ENTRY sign in the way all the way round... its easy enough, if you think ahead...

I havent had time to run this again yet, no times from me even put down so far.

Every time I come here, forward or reverse, I'm faced with the same fact: I don't drive this track very well. Maybe it's the rocks, or the blind turn in points, or the funky little off-camber stuff. Whatever it is, I hope to get it fixed this week! Thanks for the tip, and get your laps in!💡
 
Well something at work came up and now I gotta work OT, so I have just finished my first hour on this combo, I love it but I gotta submit my time now :grumpy: , I can see another .3 (MAX .3) for me, see y'all next week!

Here are my settings and they really remind me of this car in arcade mode 👍

Brakes - 5/5
Aids - 1/0/0
Transmission - Auto 10
Suspension - All default except RH - 85/90
LSD - (In my opinion the settings here dramatically enhanced the car's performance and handling, but I could be hallucinating) 5/10/5 (The LSA can't really go below 10 cause the car tends to oversteer in the high RPM's for the uphill right at T1 and the following uphill left just after T1 especially, I think cause the cars weight is being distributed upward and the front lose traction)
Everything else is stock

Final - Pretty good, no smoke while exiting the tunnel after T3 this time, lol

Well change in plans again, lol. I will have more time this week :D. I did figure out the 'secret' to this weeks race and its the same as the one from the Jaguar XJR a Apricot Hill about a year ago :sly: Will have some clean splits posted later hopefully, have seen a couple :15.9x's and 1:05.flat tho.

after some mileage last night i got it down to

17.263 - 46.363 - 1.08.843

finding i am really improving my braking points and racing lines thanks to sjaak 👍 👍 👍 but still not enough to get anywhere on the board :ouch:
my settings now seem fine except for the lsd. lower figures are better for me, but how high i still dont know.
anyway, huge lessons for me this week!

talking about leaderboard updaterering, i will be off to france for three weeks starting july 29th. if anyone would like to maintain luxy in that period the wrs community will be infinitely grateful 👍
 
I am waiting for Kyle to back from his trip so he can give me some of his settings, sim mode and I don't see eye to eye. Last weeks race was one of the best I've done in a long time, top 5 in my book :), I just may pull it out at Bobkarts next month 👍

raised the suspension to 100/110 and changed LSD to 5/20/10. The higher ride height does seem better (certainly through the opening chicane). The LSD I'm not too convinced about yet, but at a minimum it doesn't hurt.

The real issue for me isn't setup - it's hitting my apexes. With the nicely cambered corners you pay a big price for being a bit on the outside of the turn.

About 300 miles in (about 3 hours now) I'm happy with this lap, I lost .1 on the big righty before T2, but everything else was alright :) Time re-submitted with sjaak's kindly permission, thx dude! 👍

Just got back from DC so I had to give this a try. Cool combo, 👍 but I don't think I have enough time to be competitive this week. I bought the red one...:)
 
Just got a question about the concrete rules and by saying the concrete next to the rumbles it is illegal, a good example is the first corner.

For instance the rumbles on the left side just before the finish where the rumbles flows into concrete it is legal.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think Bob has been sweating. He flips a DVD of his fastest lap onto the pit counter as he downs a pint of Alka-Seltzer after his latest session. He has been desperately trying to make Trial Mountain's bumpy circuit and the BMW's chassis kiss and make up, without much success.

The Trial Mountain BMW dealership mechanics just shrug. "It's a ragtop, what do you expect if you whack in over four hundred horsepower?" Bob has run the gamut with these guys, fitting stiff springs, soft, springs, varying damper settings, winding in toe in and out (at both ends) and he's still not happy. To be honest, they're a little annoyed too, they've installed and removed the M-sport LSD three times now. Bob asked them what the point was if it didn't make the car go faster, which upset them and the chief engineer had a bit of a fit. Bob told them where they could fit it and went back on the track.

T1: 16.234

Bob says that to make his fastest time, he has to take the kerbs through 'Pete's Landing'. Steering around everything just didn't seem to work for him. He thinks that maybe actually using the road is a faster way, but to do it, he would have to run the Z very stiff, and perhaps with lots of LSD, and he didn't want to do that. He mutters about traction, compliance, weight transfer and LSD-lock-up-induced oversteer. I can see from his DVD that when running with the LSD, taking "The Ballroom" before the T1 split is a very scary affair, and full throttle spits the tail out with a fair degree of regularity. With the open diff, the car mostly just squats and goes. Bob nods and says the car is now very soft, but it mostly grips okay like that. There is a little waffle about bound/rebound ratios but he's clearly bored with it all.

T2: 44.956

Watching Bob's run up the hill and into the long straight is interesting. He takes a wide line into "IMOA's Chute" after T1, and clearly just plants the throttle all the way up through the "Stress S" with minor corrections to make the car point the right way. Bob shrugs. Again, into "'Cuda Bend" the car is dragged down from speed mostly in a straight line, then a little turn in on the brakes before planting the throttle with as little lock as possible. Bob says no under- or oversteer is acceptable here. His faster lap has a little lift in the middle of this corner to which Bob shrugs again and states that if it isn't going in the right direction using what's in your hands, you've only got your feet left.

T3: 1:06.399

Bob shrugs again when the next section is played out. He seems to run very conservatively through here, well clear of the tunnel entry wall on the right, even through he's clearly taken a line to clip the apex, over the yellow hatching of "Carpark". He mumbles something about rocks and I leave it at that.

After the third tunnel, going through "Bridge" in fifth, Bob taps the brakes to get the speed down a little to plant the throttle for the rest of the lap. However, as he does so, the car has a big moment, caught with a sharp flick. Bob isn't yet tired of shrugging and says it's the best he can do. The car, he says, no matter how it is set up, will alway try to spit you off somewhere.

Bob hands the keys back. He doesn't want to play anymore.

Gotta watch the little dirt strips near the walls after T1, they induce just enough wheelspin to kill momentum, can't have that headed up the big hill before T2. I've run enough laps to permanently lose 1hp in this little pig, maybe I'll go buy a different color and see if I can go faster.

I hope it's OK to buy new wheels, as there is no performance advantage, correct?

Wow, it's been quite a long time since I tried to run in gt mode, I used to only play gt and no arcade untill I found this place, now it's the exact opposite :dopey: Anyway, here is a quick run down of what I've done so far...

First off all stock with no aids, t3's down to 1'07.0xx fair enough, the car has some strange behavior for sure so I decided to go to work and see if I could hack the suspension behond recognition. First thing I thought was to get it a bit softer but more responsive, not an easy task. Second I tried to rid a horrid understeer on high speed exit. And last come up with a gearing that I liked.

Bought every upgrade except LSD, I'm to old for that now :) Including a roll cage. Here are the settings I'm on now in case anyone want's to see them.

Brake: 6/5 Spring: 8.8/7.8 Hight: 107/113 Shock: all 7's Camber: 2.4/1.2 Toe: -1/1 Stabs: 6/6

Gears: 3.345/2.365/1.780/1.395/1.150/.990 Final 3.425 auto 6

Here is something that helped me get the car to keep going around instead of plowing off course; Stuffed 5 kilos in the trunk around 45.

How much weight? That shouldn't do anything to the car unless you're using ballast weight.

I just spent the last hour+ wasting my time racing my newly purchased Z4 in the NA series race looking to win some money. The Concept NSX that you win doesn't give you anything, oh well. I went and did the Amalfi Special Conditions races so I could finish modding my Z4. I'm only going to do a couple laps now, as I have other things to be doing... Back in a bit!

EDIT: Yikes. Some downforce would been nice/smart, IMO. With this much speed some aero work to make the car stick is important. It makes the car hard to balance between low and high speed turns. This last turn can be a major PITA. Frustrating. I've only done 3 laps.
 
How much weight? That shouldn't do anything to the car unless you're using ballast weight.

0 ballast. I noticed a little difference in handling so it must be existing wt. balance.

Interesting find. It seems that some noticeable rake in this example is more helpful than detrimental. Going with the higher rear I immediately noticed some sort of downforce increase. In theory it'd work this way as well, as it makes the air underneath the car expand as it takes up more space towards the rear of the car, creating a low pressure zone while the air up top moves faster... :)

Anywho, I'm done for now, gotta go do other things, and yeah, no splits yet. :nervous:
 
The two areas of the track where the diagonal yellow lines are: Is that out-of-bounds? If I drive over the yellow lines would that make my lap time wrong, or am I allowed to drive that far inside?

The areas with the yellow lines are part of the track and therefore NOT out-of-bounds.

Just finished a lengthy session and got a little better.... I changed my front shock bound to 6 and sold some of my stash, 2 kilo's in the trunk now at 38.

This lap has two very close calls, one in the chicane and one in the second to last bend, I don't like that much but it is clean, I'm hoping for another .2 or so at t3 so I'm still on it.
