GT5 and a new 500Gb HDD

I backed up my 250Gb to replace it with a 750Gb. It took 8 hours to back up and 8 hours to restore but I kept everything. The backup and restore time for an 80Gb might be closer to 3 hours each way. It may take forever but it sure as hell beats losing all that save data.

Thanks for this thread. I need to upgrade the 40gb drive, I'm gonna back up to an external drive, the use a 320gb from a 2,5 external Lacie, and eventually get a 500gb for it.

I'll post the results.

Am i missing something here? I regulary back up my GT5 save to a USB Key, i just plug it into the USB socket on the PS3 and go into my saves and Copy, it the recognises the USB key.

Regardless of backing everything up on an external drive, have you tried simply copying the save onto the drive?

Guys, my PS3 YLOD around 3 months before GT5 came out, I did extensive research and have done both the restore on the same PS3 unit and the data transfer between different (my old and new) PS3s. So, I'm positive by personal experience and a lot of research that what I posted up there is 100% accurate. :)

I've done it several times and I lost absolutely no info.

Don't worry, the only scenario where you would lose your data is if you tried to restore your PS3's back up to a different PS3. If you do a back up and restore to the same PS3 or do a data transfer utility to a new one, you'll keep your GT5 data.

I am confused now Coxis,
Mine also YLOD, thankfully had my game save on an external USB. I bought a new 160GB PS3, uploaded my game save from the USB and it worked. Different system with different serial numbers. I should note it only worked after I signed into the PSN. As I did not do a proper data transfer, what happend?

Backup done.
Drive replaced.
NOW it tells me I must reinstall/update FW from USB. Waiting for download to complete...

:/

edit:
FW updated, drive formatted, restore selected and ongoing (28GB). The 320GB drive shows 290GB capacity and 268GB free.

I'll update tomorrow, but it seams to be going pretty well.

edit2:
Restore was complete this morning. Wasn't able to test GT5, but accounts, passwords, saves etc were all there.

Edit3:
All done. Ran Gt5 and my heart skipped a beat with "an error has occurred", but it was all there. No need to use the backup save game on the USB drive.

Other games required me to "activate system", but all good after that.

Again thanks for this thread and to all who provided feedback!
