Thanks for the write up Rexc...only heard about this thru a comment Tizz made last night!
My sons went on Saturday but made no mention of it(they don't get it!)

Hopefully the comp is still on today...cause i wanna try it!👍

Edit:
Well i made it there and the place was pumping..i saw that Louies time still stood at 1,20.075.
Took about 4 turns to get the hang of the new physics which was set on 'beginners'
Racing line was in play and some traction control.
Set a time of 1,20.340 which was quickest for the day but it was Louie's time i had come to beat!
There were only 3 of us amongst the crowd that were serious about putting down the best time,
the two others had been at it for a few hours - Alex..approx 25yrs & Marcus approx 13yrs
Alex was a big GT4 driver so knew what to do..Marcus however was the cold hard face of the punter brigade!
After about 2hrs of race...wait...race Alex hit the sweet spot clocking a wicked 1,19.463.
I knew the time was there to be had if you could brake late enough into the first corner to get pass the AI but
the race ..wait..thing was to un-settling for me.
Enter the 'punter'...he had spent most of his time checking the walls and then set about putting it into practice
setting a crazy time of 1,18.835.
I walked away in disgust, got a drink and took a deep breathe and decided i could not let that little rat get away
with the prize, so went at like a man possessed clocking a 1,18.616
The look on his face was priceless.

I wish to apologize to the GT community for such a appalling use of a fantastic game.

@Louie..sorry mate yours was a good time but Alex beat it fairly until the punters took over.

i'm at armagddeon now. (sorry for the bad grammar - i'm on my phone). wow gt5 is hard!
EDIT: Congrats Louie on getting a copy of GT5! The Alex dude actually got beaten! Some guy with 'H' starting his name. Got a 1:16.xx. I'm ashamed - 1:25.xx. Then again, I don't have a steering wheel at home, never a driven a real car in my life, and didn't get much goes

Hey guys just got back home from Armageddon around an hour ago (I decided to pop down there this afternoon just to see if anyone's beaten my time).

Here's how my day went:

3:30 - 3:45 p.m. - Arrive at the expo. Saw that the record time was a 1'17.4. I asked if those times were set with some sort of cheating and got a "It's within the limits of the game" answer. I was told the best non-wall-riding time was 1'19.4 so I had a couple of goes to try and beat that.

3:45 - 4:45 p.m. - Large number of people waiting to have a go. I met rexc and Daniel. Nice to meet some more GTP guys today! First thing I noticed when I jumped back on their set-ups was that the brake was registering even though you weren't stepping on it (probably due to the abuse they received throughout the whole weekend). It wasn't much but it was enough to slow you down on the straights to ruin your lap. I did the 1'19.4 anyway and decided to have a meal break afterwards.

4:45 - 5:15 p.m. - Nom nom nom nom.

5:15 - 5:25 p.m. - I got back from my break and the best time was down to 1'14.5. There were 4 guys there who were pretty serious about getting the best time to win the DFGT + a copy of GT5.

5:30 - 5:35 p.m. - I had a proper crack at the art of riding a roller coaster and did pretty average on my first lap with all the AI around and thought that there wasn't enough time for a 2nd timed lap but decided to stay on the pod until the time limit finished.

On my second lap there was a pretty big silence from everyone watching when I got to the final corner and when I looked at the time I set it was a 1:05.xxx. The time limit runs out immediately and there's a lot of talk whether my lap should count or not.

5:35 - 5:40 p.m. - The playstation girl in charge of the stand goes and looks for her senior to ask if my time is legit and I was told "Sorry mate it had to have been set on the first lap".

I countered with "It's within the limits of the game" but ended up being ignored with "Yeah but everyone's been setting times on their first laps all weekend."

5:40 - 6:00 p.m. (expo end) - Everyone carries on trying to beat the 1'14.5 on their first laps and immediately jump of when they make a mistake. Alex jumps on (as he's entitled to do so) and attempts to better his time to seal the day. Doesn't manage to so decides to run the clock down as much as possible until the playstation area starts packing up. Fair game but disappointed again at the way this "competition" was handled.

I bet he's happy lol. He was there for the whole day . I told him about GTP and he said he's going to get back on (he doesn't remember his username lol). I still won a mini Nerf Vortex though :D. And I don't seem to have seen you, rexc. Or I did, but just blanked you :P

Yeah I reckon Alex deserved it for making the effort to be there the whole day. It's just a shame that the things that were said by the organizers weren't consistently sticked to.

It's just a shame that the comp was run on a Demo version of the game that has no penalty system.

The Sony reps should have DQ'd people who were cheating though.

I guess the only thing you could do was wall ride yourself! I'd feel like a douche wall riding though i wouldnt feel like i deserved to win 👎

The demo had damage and penalties. It's just that their "challenge" pod was set on "race" and "standard physics".

There were three pods there on improved visionracers (carbon fibre wheel stand, adjustable seat distance, padding on the headreast). Two of them were for practise while the other one was the "challenge" one.

Note the gt academy wallpaper on the photo.... (here - https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?p=4073726&posted=1#post4073726)

Oh nice so they run a TIME TRIAL competition showcasing GT5 on a race format where nobody can get a clean lap and everybody can wall ride. Great way to show how realistic is it.......

Are there any vids of the event? All the ones I have seen of the Enzo are people crashing. :ouch:

After reading about all the shananigans that went on, I'm actually glad that my wife got sick and I couldn't go, as I'm afraid that might have put me off GT5. At least now I'm still looking forward to it.

Well done guys on giving it a good go though. 👍

Sorry to hear your wife is sick mate...i'm also glad i left when i did, my name still in lights
but the flood gates of bad driving had been opened.

The Sony(NZ) people have never quite grasped who this game is aimed at.

yeah...i felt dirty grinding the Enzo along the armco just to be competitive.

Tough break Louie..! 1.05.xxx holy cap.

Thanks for the commiserations Wayne. Alex told me that the his best lap time around the Rome circuit without writing off that Ferrari was a 1'19.4 so I wanted to at least match his time before I started doing what everyone else was doing.

I'm just infuriated at the lack of consistency they had with the way the organisers worded things to me during the challenge. I asked if the new times set before I got there were acheived by some form of cheating and I got told that it counts "as long as the game allows it".

When I finally get around to do what everyone else there was doing and set a ridiculous lap time the cheaters themselves protest to that poor playstation girl and all she could really do was try put on a professional face and call her supervisor; who in turn tells me that the lap time doesn't count because everyone else has been setting times and jumping off after their first lap.

I figured my time should have undoubtedly been counted because "the game allows it". It shouldn't have been my problem that the remaining people there trying to compete for the dfgt and gt5 didn't have the common sense to complete a second lap.

Hey mate, Alex here. It's such a shame how it all turned out - would have been great you and I at the end trying to best 1'19.4.

Just after lunch on monday I realised the times had gone down so much that a second lap could be completed. I completed one with a new record but they told me "We've been telling people all weekend that its only the first lap that counts so we can't change it now". That seemed to be their attitude all weekend - they wouldn't change their crap settings. They probably couldn't have had it on a worse setting, don't you think?

Hi Alex. Nice to see you active again in gtplanet 👍.

So that clears things up about the day a bit. Was it the same playstation girl watching the stand when you managed to finish a second lap?

I'm just annoyed at how these things are organised considering what happened in the gt academy 2010 nz national final (It didn't matter if you were hit by someone at 180 km/h because on more than one occasion the organisers let the culprits get away with it - especially on the first rounds when plenty of the crashing was going on - if they did decide to penalise someone, more often than not it was too late for it to have any effect on the outcome...).

They could have at least set the challenge pod on the most realistic settings they had available for that demo (professional physics, full damage, driving line off, driving aids off, etc.) because the 12 year old kids there were never going to set a reasonable time during the day anyway and it ruined the whole "Real Driving Simulator" experience for us who actually wanted to play the game properly.

I think it was a different playstation girl because when I did mine the girl was sure it was just the first lap that was being counted - didn't even check with the head guy.

I can fully understand your annoyance, man. We like GT because of the realism and the way Challenge machine was set up was far from it. At least the guys on the first day were doing it properly (i.e. using the brake, lol).

Was she the really smiley and cheery blonde girl who was there 90% of the time? I remember her saying on Saturday "if you manage to finish two laps then that will be the record".

It doesn't make too much of a difference now anyway since the challenge is over. I just don't agree with how consistency is put to action in these promotional competitions sometimes.

Congratulations on the win by the way! Hope you enjoy your free copy of gt5 and that $300(?) steering wheel heading your way ;).

I'm not sure exactly what she said but I think she said that the reason they were just taking the first lap was because if someone managed to do a second lap it would be the new record easily because of the lack of cars.

I'm sorry to hear about GT academy. I've been a bit out-of-date with respect to GT news because I've been focused on my masters.

I agree it was the worst mode to portray GT5. After my 1'19.4 was beaten by a wall-riding 12-year-old a piece of me died inside :(

Thanks mate, from the drivers that I got a chance to watch you and GTP_joeninety certainly had the most skill. The joke is on me, in a way, because I'll have to buy a PS3 before I can enjoy the game! Maybe I'll use a months worth of student loan money to buy one =/

What track was used for the demo there?

The competition machine was kept on the Rome track.
On the other machines people could choose from 5 tracks including Rome and Nurburgring

Hey, Alex! nice to see you back on GTP 👍 I really despised that Marcus dude relying on wall riding to get his time :yuck:. Still, 1.25 for me is quite good :P

Wow, what a mess. Glad I did not go there, I might've choked the cheaters wallriding their way ahead.
Bring on GT5, private lobbies, pro physics and the heavy penalities for cheaters and punters. xmas can't come soon enough
