It begins with the recording of the sound and then it is all downhill from there.

Sort of.
When recording anything, we are trying to convey what we hear with our ears (interpretation), and often times are using multiple mics for the task. I use 4 to 5 mics when recording a single acoustic instrument, each one picks up a unique sound, and often times they are set at different distances from the instrument. They'll also be focused on different parts of the instrument. If it has a pickup on, then I'll even give that its own separate track. Different people will also set the mics up in differing ways and with different uses in mind.
There are so many other variables at play, but this is just the first phase and is very subjective. Then the reference monitor (studio, etc.) is involved with mixing down... It is a whole series of tweaking that is very much dependent on the individual, their emotions and their memory of the sound, not to mention how that idea will be conveyed on umpteen numbers and types of speakers/systems.
Finally we are at the consumer. Take your favorite song and play it on each of the systems in your house (computer, shelf, car, surround system, ipod) and notice the varying degrees of sound and what each is enhancing/diminishing. Now imagine the differences between surround systems and the various makers who are tuning the speakers (not a mistake) the way a car manufacturer tunes the exhaust.
So you are all right. The sound is just like the 370z and the sound is also rubbish. I feel both ways.

Just remember to speak of the sound in terms of faithfulness, rather than perfection.
Outside of the sound quality, there is one aspect that I do not like. If you bring the car to a complete stop (Normal Car) it produces such a lovely and loud hum, but then if you apply a bit to the gas, in 1st, the volume of that hum drops instantly to something minuscule as the new sound comes into play. In other words, there is no smooth transition. I hope that they fix it. I could see it happening if you are being too heavy footed with the gas, but then I'd also expect to hear the scream of higher pitches (which didn't occur). Oddly enough, the hum lasts quite a bit longer if skip 1st gear and begin accelerating, from a full stop, in 2nd. Go figure.
