GT5P data loss

Well, sort of.

My original 40gb ps3 finally threw in the towel regards reading disc's. I figured i'd go download a copy from the store and it would pick up my saved data created from disc play. This is not the case - it created a new save profile so basically i have to start from scratch

Anyone ever have this problem? I noted a second game save for GT5P in game save data at the splash screen and have deleted the newer save data, i've not turned it back on yet but am not feeling very optimistic.
Any ideas on how to get it to pick up the old save data??

If I understand correctly, the saves are different between each region (PAL/JPN/USA) and version (BluRay/download), so there are six different save types. They are not exchangable.
