GT7 causing console to shut down

Hi all, hoping to leverage the knowledge of the wider forum for a recurring issue I have been having. About 6 months ago I had GT7 randomly shut down my console while playing (annoyingly this airways occurs mid-race). As it is a hard shutdown it requires the console to scan drives on start up as the console was not shut down properly. Symptoms are always the same, sound shuts off then 5-10 seconds later the console does. For reference this is always with PSVR2 and a TGT2 wheel (only way I play)

I've googled this, tried everything I can find (transferring from internal to expansion memory and vice versa, deleting and reinstalling etc.) I recently upgraded to a PS5 Pro and the problem is still happening. I don't have any obvious overheating issues and this only happens with GT7, no other games.

Had anyone else had this issue and if so how did you resolve it? I love GT7 but this is really putting a crimp into the fun. Any assistance would be really appreciated, cheers

obvious overheating might be the key and you could make a testrun with your console put into a different space to really just see if it obviously was not overheating.

If it is on 2 consoles and only a single game, the other option would be asking "disc game?", but as the disc is only used for installation and then checked on starting up the game (and the game being updated online which basically means all files checked for integrity and being replaced by the updates), disc game doesnt sound like the culprit.

Since the issue occurs on two different consoles, it’s unlikely to be a hardware defect. Possible causes:

1️⃣ Power-related issue – The TGT2 wheel or PSVR2 may be overloading the power supply, causing a shutdown. Try a different power outlet or remove one accessory (wheel or PSVR2) to test.
2️⃣ GT7 software bug – Since it happens only in GT7, there could be a game-specific bug with PSVR2/TGT2. Check GT7 forums for similar cases.
3️⃣ Storage corruption – If you restored data from an old PS5, try a full factory reset and reinstall GT7 fresh without transferring old data.

Maybe #1 should be considered.

Thanks both for your feedback:

@Meythia I can try the console in a different place, maybe vertical instead of horizontal? The game is digital so it's not a disc issue

@Met Entso I don't think it's power related so much as software as sound shuts down before the console does. The wheel uses a different power point on the other side of the room, and the PSVR2 is powered from the console. Maybe it is a very specific bug for VR and TGT2 but it never happened initially so I can only assume it was following an update and for several updates since then? I like the 'check GT7 Forums' bit though :)

My son's PS5 had the same issue playing PS5 games a while back. After doing a disassemble I saw dust buildup on the heatsink and main board. Cleaned them up and it hasn't happened since.

There's good step by step instructional videos for completing this task on YT. It isn't extremely complicated, but more so tedious as there's a lot of unscrewing/rescrewing involved so make sure you pay attention to the steps closly

It does sound like overheating. My base PS5 did something similar when the game was on but not gaming for a while a few times - I suspected overheating as there's soundproof tiles behind it which could hold heat - and when I just adjusted it so it wasn't perpendicular to the wall any more it stopped doing it.

@i386 no, it's on the internal drive. I do have a Samsung 990 ssd and literally every other game is on that.

@Canucks_9419 good call but it won't be that. I tried cleaning my first console and the problem is replicated with the PS5 pro and that's only 2 weeks old.

Thanks both, all advice always appreciated

It happens in 2 consoles.
I assume you tried with controller and flat monitor and then it's fine?
And controller and PSVR2?
If both are fine then it has to be the common element, the wheel/wheelbase/pedals?

Same ssd used in both consoles?
Yes but unfortunately the problem started before the ssd was ever fitted

By process of elimination that would be the case but I haven't tried yet, what is leading me to software is the fact it was working fine with that combination (multi hour play sessions) up until a few months ago (four or so?)

I've got exactly the same issue. Ps5 and vr were fine. Just got a tgt 2 wheel n pedals and it's crashing exactly as yours does. Sound goes first then .... dead. Doing my head in

Sorry to hear of your issues but kind of glad it's not just me

Likewise, unfortunately nothing I've found so far works
I've uninstalled and reinstalled like yourself but not tried it. Think I'm also using the same samsung ssd. Was thinking of getting a pro but after your post I won't bother. I'm guessing it's an issue with the wheel and gt7 software. Thrustmaster won't say yeah its us n neither will Sony. Think we've been shafted 😭

And just FYI, I also use a T-GT II.

Might be worth getting a replacement ps5 if it's under warranty but if it isn't then it might be worth opening it up to see if there's anything wrong such as the thermal paste being dried up and crusty.

Open spaces that let the console breathe is definitely something to look into. If all other options are eliminated, whatever is left has to be the culprit.

Can that even dry up?

Yes, I’ve seen a few others mention the same issue with GT7 and PSVR2. It sounds like it could be a power draw problem when using the TGT2 wheel and headset together. Maybe try plugging the wheel and PS5 into different power outlets (not the same strip) and see if that helps.

This reminds of something...

What exact model of the ps5 do you have?
I remember reading that the first "fat" models had problems with the cooling/thermal "paste" when the console was in the vertical/standing postition (from a quick google search: https://www.techspot.com/news/97192...y-might-lead-catastrophic-failure-liquid.html)

Worst case scenario is that it requires a deep system cleaning (hardware) and replacement of liquid metal.

Appreciate the suggestion but unfortunately they are on separate outlets already.
