GT7 & PSVR2

My 2 cents on this - if GT7 didn’t have VR I wouldn’t have bought a PS5 and GT7

To me VR is game changing. I don’t know if it’s faster than triple monitors but I don’t care - it’s more fun and it’s the first gaming experience I’ve had for years that has blown me away

If Sony moves away from VR and future GT titles no longer support it (which I doubt) I won’t buy those GT’s - basically I won’t go back to flat screen racing games
 
I started playing GT on controllers, because that's how I was playing car games since forever...

When I got my first steering wheel, I didn't see the need to continue playing with the controller, unless I had no other options .... Or if I play Mario Kart....

Been enjoying GT on a screen since forever, and upgrading to a few over the years, cathode, LCD, 1080p, plasma, 4K, 75inch, LED, OLED next ?

But a total game changer is VR...

I can always go back playing on a screen, but now that I have PSVR2, I really don't see the need to go back to 2D flat no matter how smart the screen is....

Video Game racing is meant to be with VR and a rig....

It may sound elitist, but there is just no going back...
Once you have tried it, it would be hard to go back...

The immersion will get you..

When I got more in to racing skip a decade or two

(I'd been using a wheel on a PC earlier than this by about 10 years, GTR2) but once you are playing a driving game with a wheel it's game changing.

The G25, G27, G29 and the TGT2 have new homes hopefully enjoying them as much as I did.

And now VR, I regret so badly not getting it sooner and I mean that with a very heavy heart, but it's mixed I got fast (well faster on flat) but VR has really brought both my skills on but also my awe. The game was definitely designed to play this way. The cars handle better, throttle/breaking better and that might be a mind trick or genuinely how it feels.

If I was desperate the DD would go on the ironing board again, but I have done 3 laps in flat in nearly 2 months because I just can't drive a virtual car like that anymore.

It's not eliteism it's more about what makes the most sense for the game. Is it cost prohibitive, yes and for most people I can understand that I feel it to, but as my only hobby is racing and this is cheaper/safer I could save/justify the investment.

Are any of you able to use the PSVR2 without a connected tvscreen/monitor yet.
I always imagined a compact setup without a screen. It's still needed tot connect somekind of screen to make the PSVR2 work right?

Gonna try booting it up without a screen attached. Normally it gave me the connect a screen prompt.
This is me. I play GT7 in the basement (make all the jokes) without a TV or Monitor attached to the PS5. The room is lit (again, jokes I'm sure) to full brightness.

I have absolutely zero issues.

I moved my PS5 from the living room upstairs where it was initially attached to a large TV. I was pretty much plug-n-play as I recall.

1) Boot up the PS5.
2) Boot up my PS Elite headset.
3) Grab a stick of gum #ThankYouGTPlanet!
4) Turn on the PSVR2.

The delay does help. After I boot up the headset I get the normal "make sure you have your controller" and off I go.

Well Glen, I hate to break it to you but once you go Pro you really know.
It's already a different VR game as is but with further optimizations, ohw yeah...
Let's see what this weeks update brings in terms of VR.

I just tried the cart to see what the head up display was like after the 1.55 update. Disappointingly there’s been no fix for the double imaging when the head up display/time is on for certain cars.

I’m using these settings.

I find it interesting how 'ride or die' people find VR. I've been VR simracing since about 2017 (early adopter of the Rift) and even though I've moved up a few headsets over time I still just feel it as a "this is fun!" gimmick rather than something I can't play without.

And with PSVR2 - it is fun! I use it for the weeklies because it makes them a bit more interesting to do vs. bashing out the same races against the same AI, but I don't really use it anywhere else.
I'd say about 90% of my laps are still on flat? And it's not because of nausea etc. or anything like that, I just prefer flat to VR - my brain is no more fooled into thinking I am actually in that car in VR than when I am looking at a monitor.

Bit irrelevant as a whole but it's just something I find interesting because I've never felt that 'oh my god I can't go back' people talk about.

For me it’s a bigger step than controller to wheel even.
When I’m on the flat screen I’m playing as an avatar in a video game. When I’m in VR I’m driving a car, I’m actually racing.

I'm the polar opposite in some repsect in so much now that I can visualise the proportions of the car much more so positioning and lines feel more natural, my inputs are smoother and it rationalises some of the wheel feedback more for me.

Am I an evangelist absolutely. For immersion you can't beat it vs the other camera views. It's not without drawbacks though and it isn't the defining factor in being fast with the game just for some people offers both a real and metaphorical sense of depth to game that flat just can't match.

Yeah just thought I'd chime in. I think that immersion factor is probably a big part of it - I don't feel as if it's any closer or gives me any more immersion than racing on flat does. Like it's nice to look around the car, but my brain isn't any more convinced.
I do find it easier to tell what the car is communicating through turns though because you have a better view of how it's behaving when you're sat in the middle of it with free view to look around it.

I also think exposure to the real world is a decently big part of it - I like being on flat because I can still see and interact with the things around me, VR limits that quite significantly so it would struggle to ever be my main form of play.

I kinda figured it was somewhat due to you moving to vr much earlier than the rest of us. Consequently, the specs on that early (and current 😆) meta headset weren’t so good. Personally, that lack of quality, frame rate, lack of hdr, would be less impactfu, more toyish. As you upgraded incrementally over the years the shine continued to fade making psvr2 much less of a revelation. Whereas, while i’d wanted to try vr since the first article's about occulus, i knew waiting for resolution, fr, fov yada, would make the experience closer to what i was hoping for. And it did. Its kinda the old, first impressions thing, playing out.

Also..no aversion to bailing on the real world temporarily. Kinda love that factor of it all. Except smoking weed while playing. That was annoying until i found the arizer line of vapes. Now i can fill a turkey bag and treat it like a somewhat awkward cig while one handing it around a track. That doesn’t suck at all. Although, strain choice matters 😝

I didn't know Disney+ supported wheels and pedals!

That's fair, and I think definitely contributes to the lack of 'immersion' my brain gets from it.
Interestingly when I ran the Rift I had a full simrig, iRacing, VR - and played like that for actually a pretty long amount of time.

In time though I slowly went back to desk, and then dropped VR over time as well - as I just kind of prefer the pick up and playness of it all without all the extras.

I really think I notice it. And it again seems just a tad sharper

Respect sir! That is the proper form of racing. Strain choice is very very important. But you always want hash rosin. There is no substitute for terps. Hash rosin is the way. I enter the race with like 3 min in the counter. Always always always Run off and Take some tasty derbs to get my head right. lol Then I race back to the rig, headset on as the cars are moving. Then I always(almost) preload a peak pro and leave next to my rig. Don’t use it every race, but sometimes you just need some emergency strawnana 🍓🍌 terps while driving! Biggest issue for me is shifting sometimes. Go terps!

Edit: I’ve missed/ been late on a few grid starts. I love grid starts. But rolling start give me an extra 15 seconds to get back in the rig.

I did not notice anything, in fact I would say there has been no PSVR2 improvements. Did a particular car stand out for you?
