Can't believe this one hasn't got a thread yet.

New York, NY - June 22, 2009 - Rockstar Games, the world-renowned publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), is pleased to announce that one of the highest-rated handheld games of all time, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, will be making its way to the PSP (PlayStationPortable) handheld entertainment system. Developed by the award-winning studio Rockstar Leeds, in conjunction with series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be available at retail on UMD and digitally from the PlayStationNetwork in North America and Europe this fall.

"We're proud to extend this truly unique handheld Grand Theft Auto experience to PSP and offer a downloadable version of Chinatown Wars for PSPgo," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "Rockstar Leeds has shown incredible talent in creating games that raise the bar in terms of depth and innovation on portables, and with Chinatown Wars we have a rich, fast-paced, and incredibly addictive entry into the series."

"Rockstar's work with the GTA series has been an enormous part of the success of PlayStation platforms," said Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America. "We're excited to welcome the critically acclaimed Chinatown Wars to the outstanding line-up of great games headed to the PSP platform this fall."

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars follows the story of Huang Lee, a young Triad who travels to Liberty City after the mysterious death of his father. Within the game, players will navigate their way through the streets as they uncover the truth behind an epic tale of crime and corruption within the Triad crime syndicate, delivering the unprecedented amount of depth that has become a true trademark of the franchise. Specifically built for the PSP platform with upscaled widescreen graphics, enhanced lighting and animation; and including all-new story missions; this version of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will take full advantage of the power of the PSP system.

I for one will pick this up, as the format seems better for a handheld than the stories GTA games have been and with the promised upgraded graphics this looks like it could be a winner.

Despite this originally being a DS exclusive it looks like poor sales (around half a million - Vice City Stories on the PSP shifted 3.5 million in comparison) have in part driven the move to the PSP.

i just got vice city psp yesterday (a bit late i know!) and i'm liking it but i'm not sure about a 2d gta because the two psp gta games showed that a portable 3d gta works and i think 2d is a step back

@ iwantdownload - Trust me, the 3D Isometric of GTA:CW on the DS was certainly a step in the right direction as i enjoyed it more than the full 3D 3rd person PSP versions, it just felt right for a handheld - we'll just have to see how they port it over, i don't think i'd mind it either way.

I wonder if it will get an overhaul in any way for the PSP, like maybe have proper licenced music and radio stations, 3D cutscenes... you know, something just to jazz it up because I doubt they will change the core of the game.

I really hope it gets ported to PS2 like the others. I have LCS and VCS on PS2 and they really are great.

I would also say its likely to come out as a PSN/Live download.

china town gameplay is 3d, it's just in a 2d cartoonish style.

Chinatown would have sold more if it wasn't for the pirated copies.

I thought it was fun on the DS because you can navigate through maps so much quicker, and using the PDA was more realistic, point and click versus moving a joystick around.

I would also say its likely to come out as a PSN/Live download.

I have read that it will get both a UMD and download release, which could indicate that Take Two and Rockstar are interested to see just how much demand for PSP downloads exist.

I meant as a PS3 PSN game, one which could have trophies or maybe additional features..

I still don't see the appeal, personally. Chinatown Wars was a very good DS game, but I don't think it will cut the mustard as a PSP game. To say nothing of how touchscreen-heavy the original game was anyways.
