1905-Present Turbocharger

Invented in 1905 by a Swiss engineer named Alfred Büchi. Magic happens inside it and then cars go faster.

Forget it's application in cars, the ability to force induction and massively increase the power of a small factor engine means it is much more efficient, and therefore helps use less resources. Global Warming nutters aside (on both sides of the argument), that has to be a good thing.

Been in love with atmospheric pressurization for a longtime. Although with the turbocharger invention it has gone through significant evolution in its life span. Used in conjunction with the right application it scores a sub zero with me. Used in the wrong application or wrongly in general I would give it a meh to cool.

Looks like JMoney beat me to the 5 Turbo and its proper use of large lettering.

So rather than point out the obvious Bond connection, have an accurate depiction of "magic" being utilised.

Cool. Though a shame it lacks a certain whine.

Give me a supercharger over a turbocharger any day of the week.

Still a cool.

Yea, because leeching power from your engine to try and make more power is definately the way to do it!

Sub-zero, because it makes all kinds of whistling noises when you step on the loud pedal, and goes "PSHSHSHSHSHHHHHH!" when you've had enough. Oh, and something about making cars go faster, too! :P

*Yes, I know the "PSHSHSHHHHHHHHH!" bit is the blow-off valve.

Because that superchargers give more of a boost to horsepower, and don't require the frequent inspections that turbochargers need?

I turbocharged a Countach in Forza Horizon and put big letters like that on the door sills. :D

-citation required for #1.

-for #2, what do you define as "frequent inspection"? A basic turbocharger has no separate belt, no separate mechanical sub-assembly, no clutches, no nothing. If the boost is low enough, it doesn't even need a wastegate.

I've seen factory turbos go hundreds of thousands of miles... with no "frequent inspections" beyond regular oil changes and tune-ups.

Unless you're saying a high-powered supercharger set-up doesn't require any maintenance...

What, I can't vote "Intercool"?

The Internet. You're Interwinning it. :d

-

All forms of supercharging are cool, but this, taking smoking exhaust and turning it into smoking tires... that's beyond frosty.

Okay, so the thing about parasitic losses, turbochargers have that, too, but nowhere near as much as superchargers or alternator-driven superchargers. Superchargers run off of exhaust heat... that's cool(ing), literally, but they make very little power in comparison.

-

Nerdy talk about supercharging... completely uncool.

Sub zero, just for that wonderful noise.

What frequent inspections would that be? My truck has about 400K miles on the stock turbocharger which is in basically perfect condition. My father's truck has over 200K miles, brother's have 180K and 160K.

Well I made myself look like a fool. Again. Without anything to back my claims up. I'm getting out of here to save face.

Uncool. Ruins the sound of a car in my opinion.

Fortunately, that doesn't make the cars suck, cause then I couldn't like very many modern cars.

It doesn't matter if you think superchargers are cooler or not, there's no denying the car culture would certainly not be the same without turbos. Sub zero.

Don't like they way the muffle a cars sound, and I'm apprehensive about ever owning turbo car because of that and reliability issues.

As @Katiegan said though, it's like the sliced bread of the automotive industry. Without it Diesel engines would not be the huge success like they are today. They've changed the face of any Motorsport discipline when they were introduced (WRC, WTCC/BTCC, F1, Indycar, Le Mans...).

Cool.

Just the name sounds cool.

Turbo. That's enough to make any car sound more appealing.

Ford Capri 2.8 Injection Turbo
Austin Allegro Turbo
Renault 5 Turbo
Ferrari 308 Turbo

They all sound better with Turbo.

Sub Zero because of the cars it's been in (Subarus, SAABs, Renaults etc.) and because of the noises it makes.

Car makers don't put massive TURBO texts in a side of their cars anymore* that tells us that the TURBO boom is gone. Still cool, because TURBO made car names sound better.
