I grew up with Talespin and Duck Tales. This show doesn't hold a candle to those shows. In fact, my kids grew up with this. Being forced to watch this everyday instead of my shows warranted a SU from me. Dumb show in my opinion.

I was too old to get into it when it came out, as such I didn't see why anyone could go crazy for it like they did. Meh.

Never seen a single episode and don't understand the draw.

Big ball o' meh.

I've seen a couple of funny episodes here and there, some Easter eggs for adults, but I can't help but feel I'm watching an underwater version of Ren & Stimpy (which did a good deal of the same things nearly a decade prior).

This is what me and my siblings ended up watching between the period where Cartoon Network's golden age was coming to an end, and the year after the release of the first movie. It's nowhere near as stupid as the early TV ads made it out to be either. There was wit in the weirdness, and even one of my parents were taken in by its not-overly-mind-numbing silliness.

While I can pick out a plenty of funny moments (perhaps one or two scenes that can be construed as cool), the series as a whole is much too goofy to be considered cool.

My vote is the same as if it were The Simpsons who were polled: Seriously Uncool. They were great once. Then they went downhill. Not long ago I saw an episode I hadn't seen. I had to change the channel almost immediately, since it sucked so bad. Same with The Simpsons.

No point taking the post-movie episodes into account when only the pre-movie episodes are being polled.

Would you also stick with the same vote if a poll concerning The Simpsons only counted the first 10 seasons?

I can't help but feel I'm watching an underwater version of Ren & Stimpy.

Older episodes definitely gave me that impression. Though they rarely delved into the level of crazy that R&S was renowned for.

Hell no. I would vote Cool for Spongebob in this case (I missed the 1999-2004 part).

And the Simpsons, even accounting for season 9 and 10 which weren't good in my opinion, would be Sub-Zero.

3 of my favorite episodes are on Season 3 alone. Their is a 4th favorite but it's a holiday special and I don't count those. Still my childhood was saved because of this show (and perhaps Star Wars, but that's a different story).

Even though I enjoyed the few episodes I've watched, I was already in my mid to late 20's when it was in its prime. So I can't vote it anything other than seriously uncool. Pupik hit the nail on the head when he said Ren & Stimpy did it all better years earlier, so it was hardly original either.

It's very difficult to compare cartoons between eras. Duck Tales, for example, I hold in very high esteem, but it was formulaic, shallow and some of the animation keys were not so great (always a problem with Disney TV shows). Also, they kind of jumped the shark with Gizmo Duck.

SpongeBob was great... once. Talented voice actors, a good variety of gags, and random, unpredictable situational comedy. Also, terrific sense of comedic timing and whimsy.

Once

There's only so much you can do within the confines of a children's show, and it has lost a lot of its luster in the last few seasons. Some people are claiming a monumental decline...personally, I think it's just because the joke has run its course and the audience want something different.

Clever to make us vote on the first five seasons, however... I'd give it a subzero.. Not the biggest fan of the show (I like Avatar better) Few cartoon characters reach iconic status quite so quickly. And love him or hate him, SpongeBob is truly iconic.

This show was murdered in the Netherlands when they decided that Spongebob and Patrick had to speak Dutch. It lost pretty much all of the humor at that point.

I am glad that I was there when cartoons were still in their original English spoken format.

I have seen a few episodes.
Found them stupid, repetitive and highly annoying.

The laugh is the most annoying thing

I'll assume that those are from the "remake" which we aren't voting on here.

The original Spongebob was witty surrealism, although, as many have said, it did borrow a lot from Ren & Stimpy.

Ren And Stimpy was simply too "adult"... well... actually... that was its charm. It was all of the goodness of 70's and 80's MAD Magazine distilled into a TV Show... for kids...

But it worked best when it toed the line between acceptable and "not on TV"... when they were freed of the Kid-friendly format, it didn't work as well, and the show went bye-bye.

If that's the best you have, you're going to need to try harder. A lot harder.
No, but there's a lot of adult humor and references in the early episodes.

The fact of the matter is, Spongebob has probably produced one of the most analysed quarters of a minute of any TV show that's name doesn't have the words "Prisoner", "Peaks", or "Evangelion" in it:

No, I am talking about the yellow sponge that lives in a pinapple under the sea with sky flowers.
The same one that is in the two videos above.

That's too ambiguous. We're voting on this Spongebob:

Rather than this one:

Subtle difference, but as I said, while one is witty absurdism, the other is just obnoxious brightly coloured antics for the dumber demographic of kids.

Gone with meh.

Never really watched it back then as I was a Cartoon Network kid but as I've got older I've seen some episodes and found them hit and miss.

When Spongebob was a big hit I didn't watch as many cartoons as I did before or do today (lol) but somewhat recently the first few seasons were re-aired over here in Mexico (where the show was given an smashing, absolutely beautiful dubbing, not since the days of Card Captor Sakura had I seen such a well made dubbing) and my wife and I found ourselves laughing like idiots at some of the jokes and the weird stuff, which was pretty surprising to me, as before truly giving it a chance, I always thought I'd hate Sponge Bob. It's not Fairly Oddparents, but it gave us quite a bit of fun. Cool.

Which is exactly the reason I wasn't allowed to watch it as a kid. When I did sneak an episode in here and there, I found it ridiculously stupid. SU

There is actually some sort of deeper meaning to be found in this cartoon, all the main characters represent something,..... something interesting and/or shocking. Your childhood might be ruined after seeing it.
