In the UK most surfers had the bay window buses as they were far more cost effective, especially as you'd have to be driving down lots of very narrow lanes in and around some of the common surf spots in the UK.
When we used to go down to Croyde we'd see loads of Bay windows randomnly parked up all over the place, never really saw a split parked up in the usual places they stayed overnight.
If you go via the open markets you'll get hit with scene tax bigtime, especially for the RHDs or and more sought after ones, but you can pick up fairly good imported buses for quite little, especially compared to the ridiculously priced holy grail buses. Or if you look at the specialist aircooled or SSVC sites you'll get a much better bus for your $$..
Only problem then is if you haven't got the skills to do some or all the work yourself, then it'll cost a bit to get it restored as prices for parts have got pretty ridiculous too.
Stuff we were throwing away (wheels, seats/interiors, beetle bonnets and all kind of bits) 20 years ago are being sold for $$ nowadays... Gutted
Had a friend who was into these in the 70's and 80's back then there wasn't much of a scene for them, he showed me his photo albums with him and his friends cutting up ovals and splits to part out because no-one wanted them. They took a RHD single cab pick up to an army firing range and dumped it there as it was cheaper than paying a scappie to take it off their hands..!
How times change..
