The Mexico didn't use the BD engine and to be fair the Kent crossflow is a bit blah.
My bad, its was the 1.6 version of the Kent Crossflow.

However I would still maintain that is still far from a blah engine with again a rather impressive history.

It's a bit of both actually.

On one hand it was developed in the 50's for the Anglia and was used in the Fiesta and Ka, - blah/meh
On the other hand it gave birth to the Lotus Twincam and Cosworth BD series, -

The car is a solid cool for me. It just looks so right.

A road car that came to fruition after it dominated the Rally of Mexico.
Also it's an original Escort, the best Escort in my opinion.
No beating around the bush for me, it's Sub-Zero.

Wasn't it, that people who need to run for border in American films, always go to Mexico? Well now if they need to do that and have no idea where to go, they can do it in a car with their destination in its name.

Well, there are only 2 places by land, Canada or Mexico

Torn on this.

Could be very cool indeed, but a few too many bald people in Ford-branded t-shirts with names like Barry swear they're the best car ever produced for me to raise it to SZ.

Some of the hype is true though. I drove a Mexico last year and it was much better than I was expecting. So I disagree with this:
If you ever get to drive one, you'd wonder what all the fuss was about.
They're certainly over-hyped but there's some solid basis behind that hype. Not very fast in street trim, but responsive, nimble, eager, and possessed of one of the best gearboxes I've ever used.

If there's an element I do agree with in the above, it's that if you ever get to drive a 1970s Mitsubishi Lancer you'll wonder why Escorts Mk1s are so expensive - the equivalent Lancer to the Mexico feels even better to drive and you can get them for about a third the price or less...

Back to the Escort, it's modestly good looking, and old and interesting enough to get "ooh" reactions from non-car people without the accompanying hatred of something a bit more flash.

Gone for a regular cool.
Sub Zero, because cheap hoonmobile/rallycar. Also, due to before mentioned reasons, a collectable due to increasing rarity.
I can't speak for other countries, but they're not even remotely cheap in the UK. They're like British AE86s with even more scene tax.

Well, here most, as in 99% have ended up on the F-Cup rally, and the ones on the road are either original and well preserved, or original and downright falling apart.. For example, my cousin was selling his F-cup rally capable Mk2 for 3k..

As far as I know Mk1 Escorts aren't used in F-Cup anymore (or ever, I'm not sure about the history of the series). Some of them are used in historic rally and those cars are as expensive as any other historic rally car. Both Mk1 and well kept Mk2 road cars are gaining price too. Some are over 10,000€ already.

1 or 2 cars don't mean 99% of Mk1 Escorts in rallying, that's not even comparable with the amount of Mk1 Escorts in historic rally.

Out here, Lancers of that era are starting to go for mad money.

There are even companies selling NOS (new old stock) or restoration parts for the Lancer that cost an absolute mint.

Voting uncool because it wasn't available in Mexico? He can't be serious.
If you told someone you drove a Ford Escort Mexico, you'd get weird looks.

Racing pedigree doesn't mean jack to most people and they could've at least sold it in the country for it is named to make it a bit less weird/nerdy. If it was any other Escort RS, it would've been fairly cool.

Also, I almost never state all of my reasons in my posts. I'll usually point out a smaller detail out of my numerous reasons. So yes, I am very serious.

In the markets it was sold the origin of the name was rather well known and clear, so in those markets no you would not get weird looks at all.

In addition to what Scaff said, if people did ask "why is it called Mexico?" it's pretty straightforward to explain how it came about.

I agree with the two of you but furthermore I've always had a slight issue with the "you have to explain what it is" notion.

Why exactly must you go into detail about what kind of car you have? Some other posters are saying this is uncool because you have to tell them it's an Escort Mexico. If someone whom you know isn't a car fan asks you what car you drive I'd just say it is an old Escort and leave it at that. If a car fan asks you it's a different story but for a non-car fan "old Escort" is all they will need, and want, and you avoid having to go through explaining that this is the Mexico trim and this is why it's called the Mexico trim and blah, blah, blah.
