It was built by Pininfarina not Lancia. There's no reason to believe it would follow that particular 'Lancia reliability' stereotype.

They didn't 'stubbornly stick' with RWD, Audi was the only AWD rally car at the time and the 037 was probably already well into development by the time the Quattro had proved it's worth.

It was also pretty much the first proper Group B car too, not just an adapted regular production car. That alone makes it special.
Wasn't it built off the Monte Carlo?

Meh. Never been a fan of rallying. The car may be legendary and great but I've never heard of it.

Works for me. A bit of old school cool, rally heritage, Italian flair, interesting looks...

... Actually, with its looks it kind of hit on something with me. Road cars that look like they are simply bits from road car parts bins stretched, welded, massaged, flared and hung around a drive train or a chassis that really only belongs in a race car... Well they really work for me, it's why I quite like the LMP GT 1 type cars too.

He's probably bitter because it beat the Quattro in '83 :3

Sub-Zero, reasons for such have already been mentioned several times.

The fact that this car didn't stay 100% subzero is disappointing.

I'm guessing you're joking, and I can't say this is true for everyone here that didn't vote SZ, but I'm not going to vote SZ on a car I've never heard of, is related to a type of racing I really don't care for, and looks awful.

No I'm not joking, and the expansion of understanding of things that you've never heard of doesn't hurt. I just wanted to see a cool car be 100% SZ. Also not sure why you don't care about WRC, really don't want to dice it out, it's cool if you don't. Looks are subjective, but the history/legend status in motor racing on multiple platforms along with package and looks is why it gets SZ.

Try opening your mind a little, you might just see how awesome this car is.

Or you could just be yourself...

Yeah, it utilized the cabin section of the Monte Carlo, but fore and aft of that subframes held all the important bits, like the T16, 6R4, S4 etc did later and Renault 5 Turbo did a year or so earlier. Even the RS200, which wasn't built to resemble the Sierra, used a chopped up Sierra shell for it's cabin. All to save on costs i'd imagine. I meant it as a comparison to the Audi Quattro, which was really just a warmed over road car.

Absolutely and completely subzero. Before the sport got bludgeoned with the brute ugliness that is the Quattro, there was this, winning the last WRC title for rear-drive cars. Pictures don't relay its diminutive nature, either; this thing's only as long as an NA Miata. It's fit for fighting purpose too, with a small, light, powerful engine in the back.

One of the all-time greats, even if it is overshadowed by the more popular machines on either side of it in Lancia's rallying history.

Captures my thoughts perfectly. 👍

A Lancia Monte Carlo on steroids. A bit of a cult car and far more desirable than a Quattro/RS200/S4/205T16.

Classic Lancia means automatic cool + RWD Rally car + Homologation special because racecar + Won stuff despite being handicapped by it's drivetrain due to serious dark powers + about the size of a Miata which is unholy + Raced in Group B + 80s - Not a Stratos - Not a Fulvia coupe - not as fantastatacular as the Lexus LFA (Everything except the El Camino, the RS6 Avant, the Country Squire and the Volvo 240 Wagon loses to the LFA automatically) - No huge mega wing like the other Group B machines.

Sparky's verdict:

Regardless of it's negative points, this thing is arguably cooler than 60% of the 80s which were cool in their own ridiculously awesome way.

Cooler than an industrial Freezer and my house in the morning.

There are not many cars having supercar-esque silhouette, while also professionally demonstrating glorious, formidable prowess through ripping loads of dirt and gravel, without making itself look a tad cringe-worthy in doing so. The 037 is a true badass.

But...this is the road-going version. Still, sub-zero nevertheless. The road car doesn't differ drastically from the rally car, after all.

No I'm not joking, and the expansion of understanding of things that you've never heard of doesn't hurt.

Rallying doesn't interest me. I don't have the patience to "expand my understanding" of things that don't interest me, unless I'm required to. Being a car enthusiast doesn't require me to know everything about every type of racing and everything that is involved in it.

I just wanted to see a cool car be 100% SZ.

 There's plenty of cars I want to see be 100% SZ, but GTPlanet being as diverse as it is, that is never going to happen. There is always going to be that one (me) or more person that really don't care for the car being polled. i.e 1982-1986 Lancia Rallye 037 Stradale...

Also not sure why you don't care about WRC,

It just doesn't interest me. Same reason that a lot of people here don't care for drag racing or NASCAR racing I guess. (by the way, you're extremely ignorant if you think NHRA drag racing or NASCAR is easy) And I'm not saying that's the only thing I care for. I like watching the LeMans 24h when it's on, and Formula 1 sometimes (although I don't follow that like some people do).

Looks are subjective, but the history/legend status in motor racing on multiple platforms along with package and looks is why it gets SZ.

Which is why I voted meh. I've never heard of the car. If I've never heard of the car I'm not going to know about the history/legend status in motor racing that the car has. Call me ignorant or whatever you want, but you're just making yourself look ignorant by not understanding that not everyone has the same interests in motorsports as you do. :)

Try opening your mind a little, you might just see how awesome this car is.

Or you could just yourself...
Meh. Never been a fan of rallying. The car may be legendary and great but I've never heard of it.

Like I said in replying to LMSCorvetteGT2, I'm not going to "expand my understanding" or "open my mind" or whatever term you want to use on a car/motorsport that I don't give two 🤬's about. If I don't care for it, I don't care for it. I don't see what's so hard to understand about that. If I was to nominate a legendary drag racing car that's made for road use, I guarantee you it will get a lot of sub-meh votes, because most members on GTPlanet don't have much interest in drag racing. Legend status means nothing when you don't care about what it's connected to.

Sub-zero because it's a RWD Lancia rally car, plus it beat the Quattro. First saw some running at Race Retro in 2008 and loved them. :D

If anyone needs any convincing as to how 'Sub-Zero' this car is, watch this from 11:01:

It only doesn't mean anything to you.

If someone was telling you about a rare baseball card which you didn't care about, (I don't know if you care about baseball cards.) then it wouldn't matter how "cool" someone said it was, it's just a card.

Just like this is just another race car.

I only see a rally car.

Didn't even know it was supercharged.
Which in a way, makes it worse.

It only doesn't mean anything to you.

 Because I'm the only one in the world that could care less about rally racing. Everyone except for me follows rally racing like it's their religion. Yep.

This. Like what I said about if I were to nominate a legendary drag racing car.

I don't religiously follow rally racing, GT on the other hand...
