The Euro Escort probably wasn't much better. It was incredibly popular - but that doesn't mean it was good. The Escort Cosworth wasn't even really an Escort, it was based on a shortened Sierra platform. The other 'hot' Escorts of the time weren't especially well rated either.

Only mk1 and mk2 escort generations have strong fallowing because of rwd, style and chasis. Other generations are fwd and meh. mk3 escort tried to compete with mk2 golf gti and failed. Only die hard ford fans care for them mostly uk (suprise suprise...).

The XR3i and particularly the RS1600i and RS Turbo had a strong following both now and then. The Golf GTi MkII may have been better built, but it was also more expensive. We're talking MkIII Escorts though, not the MkV that was around at the same time as this US market Escort.

Mk5 escort cosworth version put ford back on the wrc stage so it's something i guess.

Which, as has already been mentioned, was more of a shortened Sierra than it was to other Escorts.

This? Straight up A-to-B motoring. Nothing more, nothing less. Can't really fault it except its blandness but nothing makes it cool.

Seriously Uncool

The 5th generation RS2000 did have some success in rallying in F2 (or Maxi Kit Car) format, before the French came in with the Megane, 306 and Xsara and completely wiped the floor.

The european version made it to my country, early on they can be cool, some think it's bland which I respect. But the NA version here looks...dull. Bland. Tasteless.

SU to the freaking bottom.

I've got a great Autocar publication of their all-time best and worst road tests (up to 2005 I think) and the mark 5 Escort review is incredibly damning. 2 stars out of 10 if I remember correctly. I'll dig it out of the loft, because it (the magazine) makes great reading.

The three B's of this car are Bland, Boring, and Boxy. Overly conservative styling, slow base engine, and even the performance "GT" model is underwhelming. The only plus is that it gets good build quality thanks to Mazda.

Uncool.

Am I dreaming? You aren't defending an American car

That said, you are on the money about the car. AFAIK it was a rustbox and wasn't much good except it had Japanese engineering. I'm giving it a "meh" because I like practicality.
