Eh, it's a car that has some kind of performance I guess. But then we dig deeper to NFSU days and actually realize that this car is a wet dream to ricers. Therefore, uncool.

@Wiegert Correction: Spec-V was only 2002-2006

Most people that will dog on it because they don't really get what the SE-R is and where it came from. The 2000-2006 B15 Sentra is, in my opinion, the last great Sentra. BUT, the SE-R from 2002+ is hampered by one major thing: the crap under the hood they call the QR25. Because of that, my rating is downgraded to "Meh".

The only cool SE-R is the B13.

It's all you need.

I think the B15 SE-R would've been better off with a smaller high-output engine than the QR25, something akin to an SR20 maybe.

This would have done just fine:

The second variant of the SR20VE is found only in the 2001 and later P12 Nissan Primera. This version of the SR20VE makes 204 hp (152 kW), and 152 lb·ft (206 N·m) torque. This engine is commonly known as the SR20VE '20V'. Although, in automotive terms, '20V' would normally be interpreted as having twenty valves, this is incorrect. The name '20V' is the name of the trim level of the Nissan Primera that it is found in. It is also a shortened version of the name SR20VE. This engine has 16 valves like the rest of the SR20 engines. This newer '20V' engine, along with the SR20VET, were the only SR20 engines to get restyled valve covers. It also came with an upgraded intake manifold, which has longer runners and a larger 70 mm (2.8 in) throttle body (earlier SR20VE has 60 mm).

I realize this is the boy-racery SE-R, but all I ever can think about with this generation is two words: "Disco Potato".

Uncool. They're now of sufficient vintage and rarity that most owners actually seem to take care of them, but they were a target for poor-taste mods when newer on a level previously reserved for the Prelude. An utterly poor engine choice doomed what was otherwise a pretty okay spo-com.

Still, it's infinitely better than the model that came after, which had all the vim and appeal of a Maytag.

A year after,
That is why I said "around the same time." The fact that an engine not designed for the United States market existed that they maybe could have used for a single year if they spent the money to certify it doesn't really change that the QR was the engine they actually had to work with for the majority of the car's life.

This isn't like what Nissan did with the S13 and S14 when they sold it in America, where they willingly decided that it would make a much more thrilling sports coupe if it was equipped with an iron block truck engine.

even still they had the SR20DE for 2 years
Yes, they offered the SR20DE in the car for the first two years the car was on sale up until they discontinued it in almost all of its applications in 2002.

I don't see why the VE couldn't stay for 2.
They were phasing the SR engine out of production.

Not really sure how much more clearly it could be written. Yeah, the SE-R would have been much better if it had an engine that didn't sound like you were pouring screws down a gutter pipe when you put your foot in it; but that was essentially the only engine that existed for the car to use after 2002.

I had a 2000 SE with the performance pack (16" wheels, special seat, spoiler, etc) and it was by far better than what they gave us in 2002. I beat that car to hell and back with track days and weekend canyon runs and it took every second of it with no issues. Great car it was.
