I went into this thread, never knowing of the car before and after seeing that car for the first time, I went WOW!

My feeling says it's cool :)

Sub Zero. Even though those before the Injection version were criminally underpowered, those looks and the looks you'd get driving it more than made up for it.

Plus it's a Volvo.

Cool, I can't help singing the end part of The Saint's theme tune.

Cool looking car, in my opinion even better as the 1800ES "shooting brake" version which is just sub-zero in my opinion.
Ofcourse it still has humble Volvo mechanics and isn't a sportscar, more a sensible everyday GT ( the 1800ES doesn't only look better IMO but is also more practical with more luggage space ).:)

COOL-> A sexy old Volvo before the "Box Ages", nuff said. Sub-Zero if its the Shooting-Brake, but the thread states that its not so its cool. Rodger Moore approves!

This car is sub zero. Anyone who disagrees are communists.

Beautiful car made from the same guys who made some the ugliest cool cars ever (140, 160, 240, 260 and 740 maybe some others i forgot) And they are a cheap alternative to a classic and classy car like a Jaguar or Aston Martin. And cheap means more than only the buying price *cough*British quality*cough* :dopey: Wikipedia says this car had the B18 (and later b20) and I`ve heard those engines are near bulletproof. My friend has a PV 444 with a B16 and that engine is very (very) simple to work on. That`s good when you buy a 40-50 years old car.

Were these expensive when new? Always wondered because who would buy a Volvo at the same price as a corvette or another sportscar\luxury car.

This is the car that was supposed to replace the 1800. The 1800 esc

And of course I was just joking about that communist thing:sly:.

EDIT: Eeeeh... about that price thing. I can see the price on that vintage ad. But how much was 3970 dollar in 196x?

Subzero

Best looking Volvo ever made.

👍

They look even better in the metal, I can remember the first time I saw one and I didn't believe it was a Volvo.:P

$3970 in American dollars wasn't that bad for a car. Muscle cars tended to range in the $3000 to lower $4000 range from what I've seen in my net searching, while the Jaguar E-Type was around $6000 in the mid-late '60s. A Corvette was around $500 more than the Volvo, and a Camaro was over $1000 less. A Shelby Mustang was around the same price as the Volvo.

Of course, this is all assuming the prices I found are correct. Also, I've got no idea about the trim levels of those cars at those prices.

+1. I saw a red coupe a few years back not knowing what it was. I posted (on this forum even I think) the picture and asked what it was. It was breathtaking in the sheet metal. I would love to have one of these to compliment my classic collection when/if I am a millionaire. :D

Here is an interesting fact I found out about this car. I'll let Wikipedia explain it:

Wikipedia
A 1966 Volvo 1800S owned by Irvin Gordon of East Patchogue, New York, USA has the Guinness world record for highest mileage in the same vehicle he has been driving for more than 40 years. It had covered in excess of 2,219,751 miles (3,572,342 kilometres) by March 2004, and passed the 2,600,000 mile mark (4,184,294 kilometres) by October 2007. As of November, 2009, the car is at 2.7 million miles and the owner is now targeting the three million mile mark.

He has driven about 26,000 of those miles outside of the U.S., in Canada and Mexico, as well as in Europe. "In Sweden, we drove to Volvo's global headquarters to see where the P1800 was born", Gordon said.

absolutely freaking sub zero. the wagon version is almost in a dimension of it's own. Keep your eyes peeled for the Matchbox 1:64 scale version that is just hitting the stores right now, it's every bit as good (:

not Sub-Zero, 'cause it's a Volvo and there's only one Volvo that goes on in the Sub-Zero and that's the estate. However, you can see James Bond cruising around with a pretty lady in this, so it's very cool, indeed.

Utterly Beautiful, lacks a bit in performance, but still very very cool, not Sub-Zero, but almost there.

That fact just proves the fact that Volvo's are incredibly reliable and can run forever. 👍

Not really, who knows how many engines as well as other parts he went through.

Most cars will run for an incredibly long time, it all depends on how well it was kept. I have seen people with Chevy trucks that have close to 400,000 miles before needing a new engine and have also seen ones that don't make it to 100,000.

Just an amusing statistic here.

Assuming that P1800 mentioned earlier was made on 1st January 1966 and reaches 3 million miles on 31st December 2010, it'll have an average speed throughout its life of 7.6mph.

Not bad for 45 years' work.

Cool, by just taking a look at the car, you're thinking italian, but surprisingly it's a Volvo.

I gotta thank the cool wall for making me discover new cars. 👍

And that there is exactly why it didn't get sub zero, in my opinion. While you COULD see Bond cruising around town in it, it's a little unlikely 'cause can you imagine if he turned to his lady friend and said "would you like to take a ride in my Volvo?" Yeah...it just doesn't work. Especially when he tells her his other car is a Aston Martin DB5. Because then she's going to ask where the Aston is and he'll look like a complete idiot.

But it does prove that the Sweeds had style and class even before Koinegsegg.

Hehe btw the P1800 was build at first in Jensen's factory in G.B. But i think you know that already...

Sorry my english
