Stewards Notes
Our first time on this variant of the track. We will use WRS Time Trial submissions to order the starting grid, instead of pre-race qualifying.

If you'd rather not submit a lap for the official time trial, you can choose to submit an offline GT Mode Practice replay & laptime to this thread AFTER Monday, December 10th 11:59pm GMT and BEFORE Wednesday, December 12 8am GMT.

In the event of a field of 13-16 drivers we will disable mics and race with one grid. With 17+ we will split the grid.

(table will auto update approximately every 30 minutes)

Eligibility

This WRS-Online event hosted by 3D3 Racing is open to GTP_Registered members only. If you are not currently on the registry run the GTP_Registry qualifier and join now!

Registration Instructions

The following must be performed by every driver for every event:
  • Click the registration button above, fill-in and submit the online registration form (use your GTP_ tag ID)
  • Leave a quick note in this thread to let us know you've registered and any other comments.
The following must be performed only one time per driver (not per event):
  • Send a PSN friend request to GTP_3D3Racing, GTP_3D3_A and GTP_3D3_B from your GTP_tag account.
  • Submit the 3D3 Racing Online Driver Database Entry Form. Your information will need to be verified before you are added to the db and before your ID will appear in the registered driver table above. You can view the official driver database here.

There is a 32 car/driver limit for this event (per region) and slots are awarded on the grid using a first come first serve basis. Reference the registered drivers table above for availability. This is a stand alone race and points are not tallied for a series. Future WRS-Online races hosted by 3D3 racing may have different driver limits and will require re-registration using the same first come first serve basis and participation in future events is optional.

Registration Changes

If you want to change your time slot, add a time slot or update your color choices just click on the registration link and fill out the form again and submit with new values. Your last entry will override any previous entries.

Cancellations

If for some reason, after you register for the event, you are unable to attend please click the registration button above and complete the form again selecting "cancel" as your status. Please also post a note in this thread as the table above can take some time to update.

Delaying or Restarting Race Start

Once the race countdown timer has started, the race will only be restarted in these cases:
  • Multiple drivers report a black screen/hang, instead of the 3-2-1 countdown.
  • One or more drivers get disconnected before race-pace has begun ("GO" for grid-starts, end of formation lap for rolling starts).
  • Steward realizes there is a condition that would lead to an unfair or poor race experience.

Once the race countdown timer has started, the race will explicitly NOT be restarted for:
  • Latecomers, even if you've registered
  • Driver realizes he picked the wrong car parts (ie, tires) or driving options (ie, Auto tranny)

  • TCS | Driving Line | ABS: Optional

Start Procedure

  • A steward will announce the start order based on submitted lap times. Those without submissions will start at the back in handicap order.
  • Steward will start race and racers will carefully get into correct single file order based on starting position.
  • Pole sitter will proceed at the normal pace lap speed of 100 kph / 62 mph.
  • The start point is the "bridge" just prior to the first split timer. It's marked clearly by white walls and fencing on both sides and starts at the 76 sign as shown on the picture below.
  • The pole sitter will accelerate to race pace at this point and all other drivers will accelerate when the driver in front of you does.
  • No overtaking is allowed prior to the start point. Overtaking is difficult anyway so make it a goal to just get through the first few turns clean.

Nordschleife_Concealed_StartPoint.jpg

Finish Procedure

  • The lap count for the race will be set to include one extra lap (9 laps in this case).
  • The leader's race is complete when he/she passes the start/finish line after the 8th race lap. The automatic 1 lap to go announcement made by the game will signal the checkered flag for this event.
  • All other drivers will race to the start finish line to complete their current lap and then fall in line behind those who have already finished.
  • Any lapped drivers (unlikely unless someone parks) also will race to the line and then should fall in line behind the other finishers regardless of how many laps they've completed.
  • The entire field will wait for the last driver to pass the start/finish line and then all drivers will exit to the lobby and save the replay.

Standard Clean OLR Rules Apply:

  • Unless otherwise specified, all rules from the original WRS event apply.
  • You are expected to drive clean at all times as if you are racing in the WRS. All participants are required to follow the GTPlanet Online Racing Rules & Guidelines.
  • 3D3 Race Stewards (who are taking part in race, but will review the replay) reserve the right to kick out or invalidate the result of any driver from the Race Room for driving offensively. If you ignore any warnings from the stewards and are kicked out of the race room, you will not be allowed to participate in future 3D3 events.
  • Contact with walls should be avoided. Wall riding/bouncing to gain time will be penalized and/or can result in disqualification.
  • Rumble/ripple strips are part of the track
  • Runoff areas are not part of the track including green painted concrete.
  • Limit your contact with walls or objects, visible or invisible
  • No hybrids
  • No cheating of any kind
  • Nothing that goes against the spirit of the rules
  • Passing and Blocking: Aggressive blocking is not permitted, but the driver in front has the right to choose his/her line and braking point and drivers behind should respect that line. Be especially careful when you are on older tires than the competition as the speed difference may be significant. These events are "for fun" so just play nice and take a conservative rather than an aggressive approach when possible.

Good Luck, OLR Team:gtplanet:

Since we aren't going to take any time for qualifying I'm estimating we'll do 8 race laps which when incorporating pits and tire wear slowing us down should take a bit more than an hour. Thus, we'll set the race length to 9 laps. Basically this race will end like our mixed class enduro events with the drivers forming a parade behind the winner until the last guy crosses the line. No need for the winner to type "checkered" as the system alerts all drivers when the leader crosses the finish with one lap to go -- in this case that display will actually be the checkered flag.

I plan to do some testing tonight or tomorrow to see how this car handles "real" grip reduction and to test tire wear. We'll finalize the lap count after that testing.

Don't forget if you don't submit a lap to the official WR-TT you can submit a clean lap/time (replay required for all submissions) here to get your qualifying position without impacting your handicap. Some people may not put enough time in to submit an official lap, but it will pay to do it hear so you don't start in the very back of the grid. It's never easy to pass on this track until the long straights.

This will be my last race in 2012 so looking forward to it... although based on the TT splits board I'm way off the pace.

Jumping in the lounge for about 45 minutes to do some testing. Feel free to join.

EDIT: Out of lounge. Thanks for joining Yannik.

Fuel consumption is about 10L per lap so we won't be needing to concern ourselves with fuel. It looks like 8 laps will be the way to go if we want a 60 minute race. The tires will last 4 laps and still have decent grip. It's possible to stretch it farther, even 8 laps, but I don't think there's any way to make a no stop a faster strategy as the time lost will mount up fast. So it looks like a 1 stop strategy is the way to go and 4-4 stints.

The toughest part of the lap is the uphill section at the end after the long straight. Out of 6-7 laps I survived that without a spin or damage under 50% of the time and I was trying to be careful. :scared: I'm going to really have to practice that first brake zone when you have to jog to the left. Any tips would be appreciated.

Passing is difficult as is always the case here. The one easy spot is obviously the long straight.

Should be fun. I'm sure I'll be sweaty at the end of the race!!!

I have some tips for you Tim, when I was behind you I've noticed a couple of things.

Try not to brake in the first right hander and just letting off of the gas is fine and once you get the hang of it, you're way faster. You have to enter that corner on the left of the pavement, be careful not to put a wheel in the grass though.

For the two corners that comes right after that fast right hander, stay in third gear instead of downshifting. Again here you'll have more speed coming out the turn.

And a general tip that I heard in a top gear episode from Sir Jackie Steward. When exiting a corner, don't get on the throttle until you're sure that you can hold it down all the way. I keep telling to myself and it actually improved my driving.

About the passing, I've tried multiple times to overtake Tim during the practice and most of the time, my attempts resulted in both of us crashing. So it pays to be patient or at least trying to pass in a slower section of the track or just wait for the straight.

I did a two hour practice session for the WRS time trial, and I confirm you that I was sweating after that

Thanks for the tips Yannik. I'm really quite terrible at this track. I only really even memorized the corners during our last online race here.

I've tried some laps for the TT, but I'm useless. I can't finish enough of them clean to make it worth it. I can be up on my ghost by 2 seconds and the high speed corners either I crash or I lose all my lead.

I've got a lap saved, nothing worthy of submitting or even close, but it'll do for my qualifier for this event. It's probably 5 seconds off what I can do if i could put best sectors together, but I just don't have the patience for a lap this long. I'm going to focus on consistency and keeping it on the track and let you fast guys crash... I'll wave on the way by. Gotta find my horn button.

Hey, I distinctly remember you knowing where to go in the Mercedes DTM-car. You took my spot on the straight on the last lap after we both more or less didn't set a foot wrong for, was it 8(?) laps.

ps: Registered. I just can't let a Ring-race go to waste.

Yah, that DTM car was the first time I learned the entire track from start to finish. Before that I was literally just guessing what was coming next.

I still get lost in the middle part of the course at times knowing the next corner but not necessarily remembering the next 3 which is sometimes necessary if you are going to be really fast.

But that DTM car was a lot more forgiving... you could recover from a mistake and lose a little time. With this beast a mistake = crash almost every time.

NOTE: Now that the time trial and closed and the official times have been published those of you that did not submit an official time (including me) can post your times/replays in this thread and those will be used to determine your starting position.

The deadline as stated in the OP is Wednesday, December 12 @ 8:00 AM GMT | 03:00 AM Eastern | 12:00 AM Pacific:

img.php

*To make it fair to those who did submit, if they happen to do a faster lap between now and the deadline they are free to submit that lap in place of their official one, but of course a ghost replay to verify it is required.

Those without a time will start at the back according to handicap.

PS> The lap count has been set to 8. Since we are not doing any qualification and the race should take about 60 minutes we'll start the race timer at about 10 past the hour. Please be in the lounge at the normal time so we can give instructions for the start.

So that we're totally clear, I've added the following to the details above:

Finish Procedure

  • The lap count for the race will be set to include one extra lap (9 laps in this case).
  • The leader's race is complete when he/she passes the start/finish line after the 8th race lap. The automatic 1 lap to go announcement made by the game will signal the checkered flag for this event.

I'll just start in the back. Seeing who all is signed up, it'll be my spot anyway. :D

Signed up as reserve. Might be a last minute decision for me whether or not I race. By last minute, I mean as the lounge opens to see if there is a connection issue with me again.

Do you guys plan to practice today? I ran for a whole week here but...alone. Would be cool to test it in the pack ;)

I'm about to fire up the PS3 and join the lounge. See you in a bit. :)

I'll be there in about 15-20 minutes. The time it takes to reheat and eat left over pizza.

OK, I'm in running laps. Speedy is online, but apparently AFK.

Based on practice today we are changing the start to a single file rolling start as indicated with the updated details post in this thread:

Start Procedure

  • A steward will announce the start order based on submitted lap times. Those without submissions will start at the back in handicap order.
  • Steward will start race and racers will carefully get into correct single file order based on starting position.

Here's a picture of Pekka flying in our practice race today... easily the most outrageous lag I've ever seen:

Nordschleife_Concealed_PekkaFlying1.jpg

PS> My lap time is 7'07.608 and the ghost replay is attached. The registration image should update with all qualifiers times and we will update any that did not submit until midnight if they post to this thread.

To see it in my realtime go to the Livestreamvid (http://nl.twitch.tv/speedy6543/b/347227011) and fast forward to 1hr58min.

It was indeed the worst lag I've ever seen.

Wow, that was some serious network nonsense!
I liked how you typed that 'it's in the feed :D' :D

edit: just finshed breaking in my shiny new Vette. Time for some practice 👍
I'll be in the lounge in about 15 minutes or so...

Marc, you'll have to add Mike to the friends list. As far as I can tell he's never registered for the 3D3 Driver database. I have a couple minutes I can probably log in and send the request from the main account and we'll just let him do the rest later.

Joining for may be one hour! :)
edit: oups, didnt know i had to do something to join the practice, let me know what i will have to do. :)

Accept the friend request and join the private lounge GTP_3D3Racing.

I'm in the lounge now. Marc has it setup but looks to be AFK. I can only stay a couple minutes as dinner is about to go on the table. :( I'll do laps until I get summoned. :dopey:
