GTP WTAC Week 21 : Battle For OZ

*** Oz. The Land Down Under. Australia. Known to some as a former British penal colony and to others as the home of two pretty cool aboriginal inventions, the boomerang and the didgeridoo. One's initial thought would be that this Commonwealth country would share similar automobile passions as those in the British Isles. But they actually have a deep love of big, burly American V8 engines. Ford and GM have been competing here since the 1960s for automotive supremacy. I had wanted to use a Holden car, but Polyphony Digital removed them when porting GT4 into GT PSP. It would have been ideal to have an HSV (Holden Special Vehicles) against an FPV (Ford Performance Vehicles), but that is simply impossible. But we can still - sort of - recreate the Oz battle here for GT Planet's WTAC. GM/Holden will be represented by the 2004 Pontiac GTO 5.7 Coupe, which is basically a rebranded Holden Monaro for the North American market. For the Ford side of things, I chose a 2004 FPV F6 Typhoon - which, oddly enough, is a very well-received I6 in a land of V8 lovers. So, try to be inspired by the speed and power of the native kangaroo, but don't think of pavlova - that actually originated mostly in New Zealand! ***

I have ran a few laps, and I notice a few run off areas in the tunnels. Would you consider it clean? By the way, nice track selection, both cars are somewhat good at braking...

I ran 10 laps with each cars, L-F stock tuning :

FPV F6 Typhoon '04 : 1'25.974
Pontiac GTO 5.7 Coupe '04 : 1'26.426

About the track, I would say that the white lines are the borders of the track, can run on it but cross it in the tunnels... I mean having two off but two in, clean, but 4 off... If I were you, I would consider it unclean and try not to cross them till you have our boss decision on the matter ;)

Good luck guys :gtpflag:

ran both cars at 1'29.xxx after practices. I felt the Pontiac tends to slide more than the FPV. And Wow, engine sounds are really silent!!.

I have to agree with red ice, especially with the GTO. I'd expect to hear a roar from its' 5.7 litre V8. My times aren't good, because I had to fight the button sensitivity issue, although it will go away after 30 minutes or so.

Consider that area out-of-bounds.

:)

The brakes are nice and strong. A couple of times I thought I overshot my breaking point before the hairpin turn, only to slow the car down enough to actually make the turn. That was surprising.

I have two close times - 1'26.108 with the Pontiac GTO and 1'26.109 with the FPV Typhoon. When I saw that, I thought that was a good time to go to sleep!

:dopey:

Got a chance to run some laps in both cars tonight. Its first time I have run either car and was surprised how well balanced they feel. I was expecting quite a handful but they have good traction out of the slower corners without any TCS and as Detroitbb has already said both cars are good under braking. Best times were

FPV F6 Typhoon '04 : 1'25.013
Pontiac GTO 5.7 Coupe '04 : 1'25.557

I have both cars in the 1'25.6xx - 1'25.7xx range. I'll start doing some 'light' tuning tonight and see how much improvement I can achieve.

I ran for an hour with the Pontiac and saw tiny improvement : 1'25.790... And I might not be maxed out but it sure looks like I am !!! Not often run GT does come with consequences... So I guess I'll have to practice and practice !!!

Good luck guys !

Ahaha no way, midfield has always been my favorite gt track. Hopefully this time I can get my hands on that GTO in time.

Been a while since I ran this track backwards.

Try spamming the days by going almost into a race (the menu just before) and then going back out. Do that twice and you'll have a new group at the dealership.

Got a chance to do some more laps and managed to break into the 1'24 with both cars. However it felt like I was pretty much on my limit and was using all of the possible allowed track with both those laps especially the Typhoon lap where I almost lost it in final corner so not sure how much more I can improve.

The cars seem to be closely matched this week so should be interesting to see which one is quickest at end of the week.

FPV F6 Typhoon '04 : 1'24.695
Pontiac GTO 5.7 Coupe '04 : 1'24.905

Got a 1'28.456 for the Pontiac. I decided to make the Pontiac the harder half of the challenge. I hope to shave 1 second more by the end of the week.
:)

Both cars are in the 1'46.5xx range, after my first serious session. The FPV will be the harder part of my challenge this week, since it has less control coming out of the corners.

I did manage to get my Pontiac GTO time in the low 1'25 range. I didn't even try the FPV Typhoon, but I plan to tune & test that vehicle tonight.

Ran some laps and got a 1'24.7 in the FPV and a 1'25.3 in the Pontiac.
As others have mentioned, they're pretty well balanced and you can carry some good speed through the faster corners 👍

I managed to eek into the high 1'24 range for the FPV Typhoon. Then I decided to try and get the Pontiac GTO to join it... but was unable to do so. I did manage to reduced my time by about 0.010 seconds though (I'm still in the low 1'25 range).

Me too... I can see 1'24 according to some of my splits but doesn't want to come so I think I'll stop here with the GTO and focus on FPV -Love that car !!! Great discovery for me !!!-
My time so far

Pontiac GTO 5.7 Coupe '04 : 1'25.289
-should be my submission time-

FPV F6 Typhoon '04 : 1'24.828
-lots of place for improvements, I aim a low 1'24, easily can see some of us in 1'23 ;)-.

Good luck !

I have both cars in the low 1'25 range, and this was with little tuning and the slower start. I tend to set my fast laps without completing the full lap, instead pressing 'restart' and getting a slower start. I hope to get 1'24 with both cars, before the weekend. ;)

I had a few of those as well. I thought that it may have been because I was was entering the first set of turns at a slower speed and, therefore, had a much better angle of attack.

Well I finally have some initial times, got the Pontiac just a little bit ago. I drove the fpv first, it's definitely a handful. When I started with the Pontiac my initial impressions were cry negative, it felt slower and heavier and much more prone to oversteer...but I ended up clocking a full second below my fpv time on my second lap.

Interesting cars for this track, the high speed downhill left is scary every time :P

Gto: 1'26.887
Fpv: 1'27.909
