GTP WTAC Week 39 : Battle For 2009

*** Back in 2009, both of these cars (Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 & Nissan GT-R SpecV) battled one another for supremacy at the famed Nurburgring. The close competition was so well known that the two cars are seen racing each other in the opening movie of GT PSP. We are jumping into our time machines and taking a short jaunt back about one and a half years to relive this contest. We'll be doing a VS challenge this time around (as opposed to the normal 'combined times' event) and we'll only require one ghost replay and one photo. Choose your favorite car and whip it around the Karussell with skill and precision! ***

1. Track : Nurburgring

I just want to reiterate that this is a VS challenge and we don't need to run and submit times for both cars (but you can do both if you'd like to do so!)... choose your fastest vehicle and own Nurburgring!

I'm ashamed to admit it but I'm a little wet behind the ears as far as Nurburgring goes :nervous: so its going to be a steep learning curve for me:ouch:

im still learning the ring since i first played gt4. i tried the 24hrs endurance before using the lotus esprit on r1 tires. i placed 3rd if i remember it right. but gtpsp's pro physics is way different from gt4.

I gave both cars 10laps ride at single races and I got as best laps:
GTR- 7'31.xxx--ring tune
ZR-1-7'40.xxx--L-F tune

I've been practicing on GT5 on the Nurburgring, but I'm still learning! Buying the GTR tonight in preparation! My guess is it will achieve on average faster times than the ZR1 can.

I thought I'd join at least this one, but I've a test week in school and no psp in sight, even though I were optimistic of joining this a week ago -sigh- . Seems like I still have to wait a bit until I can enjoy racing with you guys again.
Regardless, I'll still stalk these forums behind the scenes :P .

We'll be here!

Sad to hear that, I was hoping you join us on this challenge cause I know this is going to atract people that are or can not be regulars WTACers, so good luck on your test!👍

I made 3 laps races couple of days ago and fastest laps were 7'14.xxx with both cars though I can easelly cut time with the GTR the same can't be said about the Corvette, that car is a 🤬 and you lose too much time trying to control the car rather than looking for the best line to improve your times, thats why I hate that type of super cars cause your wasting alot of power, grip and concentration that should be better used IMHO.

everything said, i can't wait to see who is going to be the 'King of The Ring' next week.:) ..see ya!

A few practice laps with both cars and the times are:

Corvette - 7'16.xxx
GT-R - 7'13.xxx

I went too fast on the corners after the 2km back straigh, and lost control :scared:. I lost about 5 seconds there. Apart from that, both laps are clean.

I'm not sure which car to pick though :indiff:. I'll run some more laps and hopefully I can make my mind up when the challenge starts.

I tried one lap with each car late last night - the Corvette ZR1 is a pretty hard to handle with all that torque and horsepower going to only the back tires. The Nissan GT-R SpecV, being 4WD/AWD, is much more forgiving and easier to drive aggressively.

I didn't get a clean lap with either car. In fact, you could say that I completed two VERY dirty and slow laps!

Got lucky last night, happened to see the Corvette and have just enough to buy it. I tried racing with it for a few laps, but I royally suck, spun out at least once or twice per lap lol, but after that experience I did some racing with some slower cars on easier tracks and now this game seems a lot easier!

In my one lap last night, I spun out three times (coming to a full stop and facing the wrong direction on the course twice!) and had at least two instances where I slammed into a barrier at high speed... so I fully understand!

I ran a couple more laps this afternoon with the Corvette and they were brutal lol so I was gonna give up on this weeks WTAC, but luckily the GTR happens to be in the dealership for me right now. Hopefully, this thing handles better than the Corvette.

Oh, don't worry... it does. The Nissan GT-R SpecV is 4WD/AWD and has far less HP and torque. The Corvette ZR1 is for expert drivers only - the Nissan GT-R SpecV can be used by intermediate drivers.

Unfortunately, I'm not even at the 'intermediate' level! If there was a level that denoted 'suckage', I'd be there.

Thanks :D

It does handle better being an AWD car. It tends to understeer at corners so it will balance out those very fast turns at the RING. Its better to learn the track using the GT-R. It requires less steering input and feels a lot safer than the ZR-1. It is also better to have a higher ride height and soft springs/dampers due to nature of the track...BUMPY, UNEVEN SURFACE, HIGH CURBS/RUMBLE STRIPS. The GT-R accelerates with tremendous grip while cornering. The key to the track is balance and avoiding high-speed braking while one of your tires are over the grass or a high curb as it will tend to make your car spin out. This is because when braking weight is naturally thrown forward to your Front tires, making one of the rear tires lose traction and won't be able to grip. It can be opposite scenario also that the Front will lose grip when Driving high speed and you touch a greater part of grass or uneven surface. The cars balance is very important here. I also think setting the Front Toe-In makes the car turn easier but loses turn response on larger turns.

FRont Toe-In--(Plus Zero) Increases Initial Turn-In but decreases Grip while cornering.
Front Toe-Out--(Minus Zero) Decreases Initial Turn-In but Increases overall Grip during the corner.

The RING does not have too many sweepers so I will try out setting the front tires to a slight Toe-In. The logic being, easy Turn then Accelerate Out quickly.
Correct Corner entry angle is enough to get a proper exit speed which is needed to get faster lap times.
OUT-IN-OUT. Maximizing the Curbs can be an advantage too. Just try to remember the WTAC rules regarding clean or unclean laps.

I'm not a fast driver in the Ring but I can pull off some clean laps. :)

:cheers:Welcome bigllama93:cheers:, you sure picked a tough week to join WTAC. You're going to learn a lot here (I definitely did, and still do every week).

This week is gonna be a ball, it's great how The Nurburgring attracts attention!

Did a few laps in the ZR-1, got a not so clean 7'24.xxx. With the GT-R (such a forgiving car, I love it;)) I got a clean 7'22.xxx. I'll probably end up going with the GT-R, tho I think given time and patience and a lot of skill (i don't have enough for this monster) the ZR-1 could get a much faster lap.

Here's some shots of this weeks cars from the intro movie...

Oh and Detroit, give yourself more credit, you're really fast when you're not reading girly books :P

I only ran the ZR1 last night and, within the first 8-10 turns, had to restart about a dozen times. Finally I completed a clean lap in which I felt like I was limping (taking turns extremely passively and braking super early) around the course... but it was faster than I thought it would be: 7'27.xxx

Tonight I'll take the Nissan GT-R SpecV out for a spin and see how well I can do with her.

I ran a few more laps and I haven't got a clean lap yet, but my current times only have one or two mistakes.

GT-R - 7'10.xxx - went too early into a corner, and got three wheels on the grass coming out of metzgesfeld :scared:. Luckily I managed to recover the car and get all wheels back on tarmac in time for the following corner.

Corvette - 7'08.xxx :D - Skipped the grass on Pflanzgraten III.

I'm picking the Corvette! It slides like it's on ice but that's what makes it so fun!

I've made a clean lap around the 'Ring in the Corvette and I achieved a 7'07.8xx. Here's my Corvette tuning for anyone who wants it:

Front/Rear

Ride height - -5/-5
Springs: 4/4
Damper: 5/3
Toe: +0.05/+0.35
Camber*: 2.1/2.1

*I don't fully understand on how camber works, so I left it at a reasonable angle.

Unbelievable times with the ZR1, Dan!

👍

Thanks, Detroit!

By the way, has anyone chosen which car they'd like to set the hot lap?

Early in the week, I decided that - since I'd likely end up in last place - that I'd choose the ZR1 (I assumed that everyone else would choose the GT-R SpecV) just to be different. Now that you seem to be going with the ZR1, I might as well choose the vehicle that allows me to drive more aggressively: the Nissan.
