GTP WTAC Week 61 : Concept Cars Circa 2001

*** This is pretty straight-forward: We are going to be exploring two concept cars from the year 2001. We're all quite familiar with the Mazda RX-8 and this is the first version shown to the public to bear the RX-8 name (it was an evolution of the Mazda RX-EVOLV concept car shown in 1999). The Hyundai Clix is much less known to us in the WTAC. I've never driven it before and I'm guessing that not many others have either. It's 4WD (unlike the rear wheel drive Mazda) and displays a striking exterior body that's fairly appealing. And given the drivetrain, I'm sure it handles quite well too. ***

1. Track : Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo

I took 'em both out for a spin and got times of 1'54 (Hyundai) and 1'55 (Mazda). I'm actually surprised that the rear-wheel drive Mazda is able to keep up with the Hyundai Clix. I thought that it would be at least a few seconds behind the 4WD Korean car.

I was also quite surprised at the performance of the RX-8 compared to the Clix. The Clix has a real solid feel on the road for a smaller car, I like this car a lot. Same initial times from me...

Btw Detroit, if I remember correctly from our last visit to this track the blue part of the rumble strip was considered as off the track, right?

You're talking about the little blue strip that is just beyond the red/orange rumble strips, right? If so, then... yeah, consider that to be like the dirt or grass - off tarmac and 'out of bounds'.

I currently have a low 1'53 with the Clix and a low 1'54 with the RX-8.

I almost forgot how much I like this track - it has a good mix of turns in both directions and a great variety of high, medium, and low speed turns. The only thing that would make it better would be some elevation changes.

Nice shots, red ice!

I took some photos with GT4 last night, but I used the Clubman Stage Route 5 (since the track we're using was only in two of Polyphony Digital's games - GT PSP and Tourist Trophy).

I took nearly the same shot that red ice did (the Clix side profile)... and we both did it on the same day. Once I saw his shot, I knew that I'd be posting mine as well!

I started running both cars for the first time last night, so I had to catch up. I skipped the 'default tuning' phase and went on to medium/heavy tuning:

Mazda - 1'51.8xx
Hyundai - 1'51.5xx

Note: I set a 1'51.3xx with the Mazda, but I went into the green run-off area twice in that lap. I'm sure I can hit that target by the end of the week.

Wow, Dan.

...I'm nearly speechless!

He he... thanks! :) I just hope that I didn't reach my limits with both cars.

A small tip from me:

When I ran the Hyundai Clix I found that avoiding 2nd gear and keeping to 3rd on the slower corners improved my lap times by a few tenths. This saves time lost from changing gears. That, and a better traction off the corner.

Yeah, I already do that and I'm still WAY slower than you first runs!

I did a 1'58 with the Clix and a 1'59 with the RX-8. I hope that I can chop down a few seconds! :D

Nice! somehow my times are closer to you than everyone else. 👍👍

Nice shots detroitbb! I'm still waiting for the RX-8 to show up in the used car dealerships to get a photo. :)

I sort of ran out of free time in the past couple of days, but I did have about 15 minutes to run laps last night. Unfortunately, I was unable to best my previous times with either car. C'est la vie!

Mazda RX-8: 1'53.632

WTAC week 61
Can't reach anywhere the fastest lap times that you guys already set.
I think its my choice of driving lines that made me slower. :(

Yesterday I managed to improve my times a bit with both cars, but I don't think I hit my limits with the Mazda. With enough time, I think a 1'50.xxx is possible with the RX-8.

This is the track of my first WTAC so the circle is complete now:)

This cars are pretty even, they are capable of very similar lap times on this track (even though I thought the Clix would be considerable faster) they both can reach below 1'50.5 with a perfect lap.

My Entry..

I discovered that too and that was the only way to reach 1`50.xxx times for me...

My camera is broken so I can't take a picture of my PSP screen. Oh well... :ouch:

If this happens with next week's challenge, just post your ghost replays and PM me and I'll take the photos for you and post them up. Just make sure this all happens before the deadline!

👍

MVR08 did it again - another ultra-fast submission that was only really challenged by Dan360. They were only about a second apart this week as we possibly enter the last challenge of this racing session. Dan is sitting at 42 points and will win the overall championship if he finishes on the podium for Week 62.

pvr77, being idled this week, has slipped in the overall standings from 2nd to 3rd. But he can easily take the silver back in the next challenge as I stink at rally events! Of course, I will be keeping my eyes on red ice as he is a rally-master of the highest order.
