So it's getting toward Summer (for me anyway :sly: ) and I want these car draw comps to resume so without further ado...

I give you the Subaru B9 Tribeca

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For more information about the format change please visit the State of the GTPAAC! Thread

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Objective:
I want to see what you guys can come up with to make this sorry ass bastard of an SUV look some what desirable.
( If that's actually possible, thinks back to the Aztek draw comp :shudder: )

Deadline:
There is no deadline but I'd like to post all our works formally in the poll area to showoff and maybe even get outside feedback. :D

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So that's it! Get to Draw!

Right on. I'd love to see some actual Subaru in there. I don't see any currently.

What was the reasoning behind that front thingy anyways?

It's not that bad. What's wrong with it? It's not any more offensive than the SUV kak that's out there already. It's ten times nicer than the Cayenne!

Omnis
are you on the loco weed?

No... but I think he needs to get his head examined right away! :scared:

I didn't think it was possible but I think this is actually WORSE than the Aztek.

I saw a whooole trailer full of these things today! They're bigger than I thought, certainly will be a different block on the roads. The middle 'intake' was meant to represent the aggressive nose of a jet plane.

Nah, this isn't worse than Axtek. This car has shape. The Aztek looked like an old Saab 900: a triangular block of cheese.

I will pull through with my promise. I'll post something. It won't be in the next 24 hours though. Maybe...

the new front end i dont like on the next-gen subis' .. they look like alfas that way.. maybe they felt thier current designs were aging?

Okay I did get some drawing done. Just some initial sketches, and I still don't like where my ideas are going. Here are some random selections. I decided that there are currently two Subaru design languages, the one where the Legacy is going, and one where the Forester/Impreza is going. The latter is fairly unoriginal and nothing special, so I decided to stick with the new Legacy feel. A wavy shape, ready for massive oppurtunity. What I got down was just a beefier Legacy feel. That is not really what I wanted, I wanted to progress the design, something that I think the whole industry needs. I still have a pile of ideas that I think I could put down onto paper, but I'll leave that for another day. I just got some rough ideas, but really rough, I don't even have any general proportions or any key details decided on yet. The only thing I really achieved was decide where I wanted this whole car to go, theme-wise. That's kinda hard, cause I really can't see why Subaru needs this car at all. They already have the compact Forester, and the Outback seems capable enough for any offroading anyone really needs. Oh yeah, the Baja... I'm hoping to get a more concentrated and complete design with this one, I really feel that I can do somehting with these ideas. They just haven't all been put together yet. Hopefully it'll all get completed to make a pretty puzzle.

4H pencil, just because it was the first sharp pencil in the row. The hard range is also fun to sketch with as the amount of contrast you get is kinda hard to get, so you can adjust that contrast with low sensitivity inputs thorugh your strength. A good thing for sketching, where you don't wanna be switchin pencils all of the time. Also you can get a fine line from a lot of passes that barely put down any line at all. Oh yeah, big no-no with these designs is the incompletion of the wheels. I really should've put in some filler there, it really helps the general stance of the car, which helps visualize what kind of car it will be. My bad, I really will never recomend doing that. Always draw something in there...

The middle two are the ones I will keep (note they are the more detailed of this lot), the rest will most likely be ignored, all design ideas more or less disregarded in the final product.

If anyone has any questions about anything I do or say, ask away. I'm hoping this will give inspiration to others to get something posted. I'll keep updating my contributions to this format until I have a properly hand-rendered final design.

Anyways, without any further ado, I will inaugurate the new and hopefully-improved GT Planet Drawing concourses with this brief collection of unfinished basic sketches.

So will anybody else be participating here? It's been a a number of days and still nobody has said a thing?!!?
I try and enter this been a long time sinced I entered one of these comps.

VIPFREAK
... I knew you'd ask that question.

Yeah well I get people asking me to participate and nobody seems to be interested in the first place. It only takes 5 minutes to sketch something up, plus another 10-15 minutes to scan/edit. Even less to post comments or ideas about any of this....

The car has a boring design...
An agressive fighter jet theme does not fit this type of car anyway. In order to make this car look good, you just need a NEW design, not a modified one.
In order to make an SUV look good, you need something smarter than the standard agressive look most modern cars have... I'm thinking of a more cute style... with unusual elements (like perhaps an integrated but not funcional decorative element). Perhaps I'll be designing a bit these days. But inspiration might best come from the area of small japanese concepts cars.
More on this later...

You do realize that was your own post you quoted....right? You could've just edited it.

told ya. *le sigh...*

point of order, how can anyone make that front look desirable?? first person who does gets a prize... a round of applause from me :sly:

TVR&Ferrari_Fan
Wow what a prize are you keeping dust off the prize.

Yoda?

Talk properly!

You don't have to make the front look nice. Just design a Subaru that fits into the exact same market segment as the B9.

It looks like someone took the Alfa Romeo Brera and 'dumbed it down' as an American SUV.

I will definately be participating, too. :)

EDIT-Here's my early entry....not quite done (or completely satisfied) with the design yet.
What's the point in making a jet based car if the nose is flat? On top of pointing it out more, I also simplified it and erased most of what was on the lower bonnet. I moved the headlights up, ie BMW Z8 in hopes to flatten the car out. The only thing about the regular B9 that I respect is it's freeform, blobbieness. It flows, and is at least somewhat coherent.

The back-Clearly the Giugaro-esque tailight overhang was a throwout. I attmepted to sleaken the whole car by stretching them and adding a shelf above.

All in all, I'm trying to create a low, sleek SUV. IMO, there are too many SUV's on the road right now that glorify being huge or being tall, not many that want to be more sculpted or aerodynamic.

Keep in mind, these are still VERY rough.

VIPFreak-you gonna post 19 & 18 polls?

I wonder why there are no tires on concept drawings, and no space between the wheels and the wheel housings either. It may have a particular cool look, but it's nothing like the challenge of subtle proportions of cars of 60s cars and earlyer.

Mine aren't pleasant to look at though, just some very quick sketches. Nothing final, just an idea of some particular elements. I'm not gonna work it out further though, sorry.

It's mostly about the side though, I didn't do much with front or back. But you can still go anywhere with those.

Nice pics dood... um.. 18 and 19?? :dunce: I've been so out of it because of work. :grumpy:

heres a prelim ideation.. will move toward a more "stout" apperance, revising the rear and roofline. wheelbase proportions will also change.

Well, to be honest, I don't think that the B9 Tribeca is ugly... it's no beauty, but I couldn't say that I like other SUV's more....

I really can't believe I'm hearing as many people say that this POS actually doesn't look bad... WTF is wrong with you people?! :scared:

ok... ok... I finally got some free time and have been practicing to regain my "skill" (ha ha whatever...) Anyways, wip...
