GTPlanet Pet Peeves

Dan
People who still upload their images here with embedded Flickr links. I enjoy browsing the photography threads here because it's wonderful to see how creative people can be. However, if I'm scrolling along on my phone and get sent to your page, that is extremely annoying. Or, if I click on an image to expand it, I'm immediately taken away from GTP.
Sometimes it's easier to do so than uploading the full 6xxx X 4xxx size image, or having to have multiple versions of the same image. Flickr lets me chose how big I want it and it works out well for posting in places like forums and such.

More of a general forum issue no matter where you go but,

mods who speak to everyone like they are their 12 year old child
people who feel the need to police the forum and correct/chastise everyone who says something incorrect or controversial

When a member knows what they are posting is off topic, but they still proceed to post it anyways.
Like for example, lets say someone comes onto this thread and says:
I know this isn't a GTPlanet pet peeve, but I just hate it when people take forever to respond to friend requests on Facebook.
If you know it's off topic and has no relation to the thread, why do you even post it?! :odd: *insert confused girl jpg here*

(I came up with this quote myself, it's not quoting anybody here)

Page skipping due to people posting a lot of pictures. Also, when someone doesn't use the spoiler tag and posts a lot of pictures on a page. To note: When I say a lot; I mean at least 20 pictures in a single post.

I had to stop watching the Driveclub photo thread because of this.

……XsnipX……...people who feel the need to police the forum and correct/chastise everyone who says something incorrect or controversial

We must keep in mind that IBTL posts may be treated as such by the staff (one never knows what goes on behind the scenes, right?) and that a new thread, quite apart from the repetitive chaff about the niceties of thread-making (instead of comprehending the scope of the subject tabled and contributing to constructively building the discussion) that is usually posted when a new discussion is tabled, may be a discussion not quite fitting to Jordan's vision for this site.

As kikie, once mentioned - GTPlanet is like a library full of books on every topic possible - and (if we are to use publishing as an analogy) then these books must be curated, especially since GTPlanet (almost as old as the commercially available web) has a reputation for credibility, and that reputation has been fiercely protected for years.

From this point of view, discussions that provide an opportunity for spam don't last long. Hardworking thread-makers, with a reputation for creating memorable, and even perennial discussions, can sometimes stumble in their efforts - in their enthusiasm creating inappropriate discussions and having them closed. This shouldn't deter you; only fools have a 100% perfect record. Don't let a closed thread or IBTL posts (most often from members who have never dared begin a discussion themselves, or merely begun one that had a page and died) halt your progress here.

I have participated in many a discussion you've begun - and many of them still remain unlocked, though all has been said and done - and if we still had the privilege of locking threads as some of us did in days of yore, then no doubt you would have closed some of those discussions yourself (as I have done in the past with many discussions I began, once we had reached a consensus, or to prevent undue bumping by those glued to their screens).

You have to take into account that many have only a keyboard to reach out and touch fellow human beings, maybe even under the impression that is all you have yourself, and that challenging your territory is a personal victory of sorts. You have to factor in that sometimes such instant gratification is the only thing that prevents them taking their lives.

Ease up. It's a Forum. Discussions come and go, unless they turn into 'chat' threads flying under the guise of perpetual information. Enjoy it to the best of your ability and remember that there is a 'ignore' button.

And don't stop making threads - there's not a lot of us who have mastered that art to the satisfaction of those more important around here than those whose originality extends to only tailoring titles and subjects to suit the limits of their comprehension of a greater reality than tossed graphemes.

As a final arm around your shoulder, let me tell you that the only thread that I ever had locked here by the staff was a subject that took off at another Forum and ran for years before it wound down - so what is not suitable here may be the cat's whiskers somewhere else. Your limits are your own.

Hope that helps put a smile back on your face and reduce on the peevishness. :)

People using status updates to post edgy reactions to what they've just read instead of posting in "that" thread. Worse...you can't comment or view their profile.
I don't mind this (except the part where you can't view their profile), as it can get you into a topic at hand that you normally wouldn't be in a thread. However, I do hate being left on a "wait, what?" cliffhanger sometimes,

Double-standards and short-sighted statements. Been here long enough to see, and probably do myself, far too many times.

Part of why my post count is so low given the time, I'll come across it, think about responding, and then realize it's really not worth arguing over, there's better things to do.

I'm getting worse at that last part though, as time goes on and access becomes easier and easier...

Liking every single 🤬 thing.

Does it matter though?

I've personally never "liked" a single post but if I liked every post why would it bother you?

I made a status update once. Might have even been twice. They're very easy to ignore.

@TheNuvolari @Lord Kacperov

Sorry, but you two are the prime example of this.

TBH, don't know what's wrong with liking almost everything. :)

It was a silly thing to get peeved by anyway.
I disagree.

To be fair, getting a large number of alerts in a short span of time from the same user can be pretty annoying to some. (Myself included)

Of course it's not the most annoying pet peeve out there to me, but it's not the least either. (Just saying :scared:)
(TheNuvolari and Lord Kacperov, this is NOT directed at you guys)

Spektru was an example, but she's banned. (Thankfully)

I assume that's primarily why it annoys people...I turned that alert off on day one. :P Without the alerts, there's a link for "Likes You've Received" under your profile menu next to the inbox. I appreciate tracking when people have read or engaged with my posts, but I don't think that needs an alert.

I'd forget to check that as I have a tendency to forget that I've even posted anything that might warrant a "like" or was involved with a status comment that has a bunch of additional replies.

Which is why I'll log in after a few hours, see a dozen alerts and think "what the hell for?!?"
