General Information and Regulations

All rules, regulations, car specifications, and races are controlled by GTPLMS sanctioning body, GTMSA. Any and all questions should be directed to GTMSA officials (ABud or oldmodelt) and officials will do their best to answer in a timely and accurate manner.

All drivers must run at the specified weights and horsepower settings provided by GTMSA for each round. Horsepower and/or weight settings are adjusted for competitive reasons each round based on finishing positions from previous rounds.

IMPORTANT
For this season the track is defined as the area between the parallel white/yellow lines (see image below). This means that rumble strips no longer count as track.

  • Standard Online Racing Rules Apply.
  • No Cheating, hybrids, etc. You must run the car specifications I give you
  • Try keeping at least 2 wheels on course. Long races = small mishaps, but absolutely NO shortcuts
  • No wall-riding as well. Combined with penalties, this will slow you down considerably, so don't do it.
  • All decisions by GTMSA officials are final

Since I had the day off from school today, I had a chance to fit in a race. It went well and I'm going to submit it, but I wish that the AI were at the previous level, because they were slow enough at +4 to be major obstructions. :ouch: On the other hand, I was able to pass them before the corkscrew on lap 1.

I was fairly pleased with my pace, consistency, and strategy (eight laps on hard tires, and then five stints of six laps on mediums) and although I went off the track four or perhaps five times, it was always only slight, and each time I deliberately slowed down, costing myself between .5 and 1 second, to make sure that I didn't gain anything. I thought that I would have a race free of AI contact as a result of effort, foresight, patience, and luck, but near the end of the race, the BMW cut the kink in the front straight much closer than I expected and I think that I brushed it slightly on the way past. :guilty:

Well, it sounds better than having that pesky Mazda that was a million times faster than anything...except for you maybe. :P

G'Day Austin,
Thanks for the strategy heads up.
Is it okay if I follow suit ? Mainly for experimental purposes ( see below -

I was wondering do you run with TCS on or off ? as I am unable to watch your videos I obviously dont know.
I only ask because the McLaren BMW I am running seems pretty hard on tyres, even more so with TCS off.
Using Apricot Hill experience as a guide there is no way the BMW would do 6 laps on RM ( not without spending a lot of time off track at least ! ).

Any thoughts ?

I don't know about Austin, but for me, the Panoz is the worst on tires out of the three cars I've chosen. The Pagani can usually get a couple more laps out of it's tires and the BMW is just awesome on tires. But it all depends on track and car.

If my strategy works for the BMW as well, then by all means use it. 👍 The Panoz eats tires, as do I, but the six laps on mediums actually weren't much of a stretch, even though the fronts were orange for the entirety of the last lap of each stint (I lost a few tenths on that lap each time, but nothing more). I don't use TCS, and turning it on actually wouldn't affect the number of laps possible in the Panoz because the rear tires are still green when the front tires are dark orange! However, for the BMW, which is, as you note, extremely hard on rear tires, activating it could be beneficial, although I doubt that it will gain you more than a lap. I always drive the BMW with rear tires a grade harder than the fronts, which makes the handling quite twitchy, but I find it enjoyable, and in my experience, it's actually faster over a lap than having a "normal" tire combination. And obviously, you'll get quite a bit of extra tire life that way. If you can keep it under control for 38 laps, then I definitely recommend doing it that way. 👍

I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize for the confusion in the GT1 class with the AI. During my testing on tyre wear I ran my race scenarios with the AI on 0 to allow me to just concentrate on the tyre wear and not the race. I didn't take into consideration the lineups. :dunce: Especially with the power differences being made with the four cars to make them as equal as possible.

ABud is too much of a gentleman to mention it. 👍 But it was one of those things that I didn't think about until this cropped up. But I will file it away for future reference. 💡

And I was interested in how you kept the Panoz in 3rd gear during turn 11. 👍

In general, in GT4, you want to use the lowest gear that suffers from a minimum of wheelspin. Stated in another way, if the gear above the one you've selected produces wheelspin, then don't use that gear (e.g. if you're in second and the car wheelspins in third, then don't use second). Often, that means using the gear that has no wheelspin at all, but sometimes it means controlling some wheelspin in the gear below. Basically, use the highest gear that doesn't bog down. So even in the very slowest corners, cars like the GT1s and LMPs are almost always better kept in third. The corkscrew is unusual in that it's bumpy enough to induce a lot of wheelspin even in third, so fourth (in which you still don't avoid the problem entirely) is preferable. You reduce the risk of getting a huge trail of tire smoke and save the time taken up by the upshift, while the car still has torque to spare even at low RPMs and the steep downhill slope further assists acceleration. If you're using a manual transmission, I encourage you to try it yourself; you should notice better lap times. 👍

woo! I'd like to see what your times would be on Sebring. The concrete on the front straight used to be used as a runway, so there's a crap load of bumps on the first and last corners. And there's a mixture of asphalt and concrete with the asphalt patched with concrete and the concrete patched with asphalt. So, you have varying grip throughout the track. I would LOVE to see Sebring in a future GT game.

The AI in this track is :banghead:
I did a couple of runs last night to test tires but every time either they bumped me out of the sand...or I loose focus once I pass them :dunce:, which was not often.
But I think I have the passing points down to get a good tire test the next time.
I noticed the front tires on the Speed 8 tend to be colder longer, I tried combo tires and that seems to make the ride much better.

…the rear tires are still green when the front tires are dark orange!

Now, if this was the case for me, I would put softs on the rear while keeping mediums on the front. I’m just interested to know why you don’t do this, have you found that it’s actually faster to have 4 mediums than to have mediums on the front and softs on the rear? Or did you try it and find that soft rears wear quicker than medium fronts in this case?

The problem with doing this is you end up with massive understeer. Personaly I don't mind running softs on the front and mediums on the rear ending up with an oversteering car (which can be a pig :dopey:), but the understeer induced by running them the other way round makes my lap times so slow as to make it not worth bothering with.

I had to run softs on the front and mediums on the back for my BMW. I was surprised by this race to end up a lap ahead of everyone at the end. A big difference from Apricot Hill. I still have to run this again, though. I'm going to attempt to run medium/hard tires for most of the race, switching to soft tires for the last couple laps. My first attempt resulted in a half spin out at turn 5 after about 3 laps. That spin was thanks to the Toyota Minolta, I had passed for 2nd place. I also had a couple major offs. One due bad tires, and another one due to fighting traffic, which ended up in two spins after first getting clobbered by the Audi R8, then one of the Nissans.

I did consider attaching softer rear tires, but I never actually tried it because I feared the problem that ABud describes. It's very possible that the wheelspin would be sufficiently helped in order to outweigh the induced understeer, but I was satisfied with how the car behaved with an even set of tires.

Hmm, interesting. Personally, I find it easier to drive a car with understeer than with oversteer.

Having just made my first attempt this week in the AMG, I find that it would be useful if I could use medium front and hard rear tyres, but having tried that setup, I just can’t handle the increased oversteer caused by the softer front tyres, so I will be using hard tyres throughout the race. Of course, it doesn’t help that the AMG oversteers even without the mixed tyres.

I love driving the soft front/medium rear combo on the McLaren GT1 car but I make too many mistakes to gain an advantage. I need to brake earlier and pay closer attention to my slip angle.

Sent my time.

Gave it 1 shot. Did a 4 stopper and had 3 offs in an otherwise tidy race. The first 2 were in the first couple laps, breaking too late while battling the AI and going straight out into the grass. The final one I simply wasnt paying enough attention and just went off on my own. Luckily I was able to avoid hitting cars and walls in all incidents.

Ran LMP couple of days ago. Will try again after my pathetic performance. :yuck: Ran GT1 last night and pretty happy with it. 10-15 secs left for improvement to correct small mistakes.

Just jumped over to GTRP website and saw that Austin343 is ranked #1 on the leaderboard in fastest total time for all the tests. Remember in order to achieve this one has to submit MaxDrive files for each and every test for verification. Link is in his sig.

Way to go. 👍👍👍

Actually, I don't have a replay device, and I evaded the rule by just adding .001 to the fifth-place time when my time would have placed me in the top five. :embarrassed: Holl01 and Zoky are much, much faster but each had one or two times removed, either for not submitting a .max file (holl01) or for tiny wall touches or barely noticeable three-wheel off-course moments (Zoky). In fact, I've noticed since I set the times that two of my best laps are very slightly dirty and a couple more are questionable, so I really should redo those and submit a (presumably) slower time. Nevertheless, thank you for the compliment, and I really enjoyed doing those tests. :)

I stand corrected but still impressed all the same. Shame you can't submit the YouTube vids. And I'll remember the .001 technique when I submit something for 253rd place.

When I first started competing on GTP, I had doubts myself that what I was seeing was real as far as times go. Pretty amazing stuff. I thought there must be some "trick" and such speed could not be the result of simply picking the right lines.

At some point I realized with more work I could go faster. Likely never as fast as the known factors but I still manage a good finish and fun times. I am really playing two games, GT4 and keeping fogbound focused and competitive.

Both runs done. LMP a 2nd time. Erased most of the mistakes from 1st run. But still had a few spaceout moments. Like when I was concentrating on the track so much that I forgot to pit at the right time. :dunce: Had to go another lap on very orange rear tyres and then change my strategy. :scared:

I am very pleased to find out that I am not alone in doing this :dopey:
Thanks !!

btw - what is a maxdrive replay. Are not captured replay vids acceptable ?

Well I still haven't run either race and I'm working tomorrow so doubt i'll get GT1 done at all. Hopefully I'll get a run at the LMP race, could do with some points :)

I'd forgotten just how irritating the AI are around here, not only do they spin out a lot but they also flatten all the brake distance markers

Got LMP done, 1 DTP for a stupid spin at turn 6 where I drifted wide and clipped the dust on the outside of the corner :ouch:

Not going to get GT1 done as I leave for work in an hour and won't get back till after the deadline 👎.

Good luck all!

I am still pretty new at this and have not carried weight before, I wonder what the effect will be. I had a few laps in when the parameters were posted and I think I lost about 1.5 seconds/lap with 5% but didn't track it too closely and my times hadn't stabilized yet.

I may trim my schedule to one or two classes for the long races if I leave LS with any additional points. Big " IF "
