“We want to convey to all those drivers who love motor sports what it feels like to sit behind the wheel of a rally car”, says Roland Gumpert, founder of the company that bears his name.

The two-seater model with the very Audi Quattro-esque like snout and overall stance, justifies Gumpert's rally/racing claims with an unidentified engine producing 420hp and 520Nm (383 lb-ft) and all-wheel drive, boasting a reported 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint time of "inside of 3.0 seconds", according to the company's release.

Gumpert says that the front-engined car sports a lightweight construction "using a tubular frame and bodywork made of a carbon, glass fibre-reinforced plastic and aluminums mix".

The Explosion, which is scheduled to enter series production before the end of the year, will have a starting price of €105,000, or about US$144,000 in Germany.

That looks like an Audi TT for some reason. Also reminds me of a Ford Mustang front end and a Lexus LF-A rear.

I like everything but the rear. That is hideous. I think ditching the "mutton chop sideburns" would be a good idea.

It's just the name Gumpert that makes me love their cars. I think it looks all right, but I doubt that's going into production, and if it is it won't be worth however much it's gonna cost compared to a Ferrari or Lamborghini.

Gumpert. I just love that name! XD

Explosion has to be the stupidest name I've ever heard for a car. Plus, 105k for a car that looks like a tarted-up Mitsubishi Eclipse is bonkers.

I agree that the Explosion isn't a great name. But its better than Huayra and Huracan. Who names a car after sounds a cat makes coughing up a hair ball.

I like it a lot, but it looks like it belongs in a comparo with an 86/BRZ, not with other cars that cost six digits. I guess Gumpert isn't in a position to pull off selling it for less, but I think it would have been awesome if this was an entry level lightweight coupe, with maybe 2/3 the power and for 1/3 the price. Or if it was the next TT RS.

It's a very jarring, and IMO ugly design. There's no cohesiveness. It's a mishmash of shapes, angles, and sharp edges that don't go well together, at all.

Without reading any desciption of the product, I can't tell what it's supposed to be. Small sporty BRZ, or TT fighter? Honda Civic Coupe bodykit? Starter company from Dubai's first car?

So I read the descrption and they want you to feel like you are in a rally car. Almost $150,000 rally car. I don't get it.

The rally car bit makes it easier to understand. It's no Apollo though. Name makes me instantly recall Chrysler Firepower.

Tube-frame racer... GRP body... hardcore... hmmmm...

That works. And it's almost $100k cheaper, to boot.

Not quite $100k uglier, though... Maybe $50k worth of ugly...

I liked the Gumpert Apollo a LOT and felt pretty sad when I heard the news that Gumpert was shutting down. Despite people talking about how ugly it was, I liked the whole function of the design. It pretty much was a race car on the road.

However...I'm afraid this would only amplify Gumpert's name for creating ugly cars. (Not the Apollo for me) The front and rear fascia's don't look that bad. But the overall outline of the car does not seem well proportioned. Not sure how much "rally car" I see in it.

Wait, we're getting some kind of civilian coupe from a bankrupt company who couldn't sell enough of their hideous, but incredibly fast sports cars to keep them afloat? Shocking. A shame they took the magnifying glass to the model of the Audi A7 that their child plays with. It was quite the toy, really, and had already done an at-scale 200,000 miles. "No, we must make a car to sell people who don't know what they're doing! So we can continue to prove that we are much the same!"

Gumpert. Go to the principals office. We need to discuss your performance on this assignment. It has been unsatisfactory.

Interesting!

Love it so far except for the front and rear bumper. It looks too busy with the weird shapes.

Wow, I know the one pictured is a show car, but the fit and finish is horrendous. Even on my tablet, which I'm on, I can easily see inconsistent panel gaps, uneven lines, and both the hood and trunk don't even look like anybody attempted to fit them properly. Not good so far.

I was going to rebut that it's an illusion caused by the angle of the panels, but then I checked the other pictures... wow... neither the hood nor the trunk sit quite right, do they?

If they actually produce it, I have faith that Gumpert would have a very nicely finished car. I remember the 2012 Viper show car was just as bad but after seeing a 2013 GTS in person I can say SRT have come a long way in fit and finish. So I hope the same for Gumpert!

Wait a minute... am I the only one who noticed the 0-60 in "under 3 seconds"? With 420hp, that thing is going to need some very short gear ratios to get into the 2.x's. 60mph would have to be its top speed

Also, Explosion.

It also would need smaller wheels, I hate unnecessarily large wheels on a car.
