I just ordered a Xecuter HDXT PS3 Hard Drive Xtender and am now trying to decide what hard drive to get to replace the current HDD in my PS3:
  • Western Digital WD3200BEVT Scorpio
    • 320GB 5400 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 8MB Cache

I am currently leaning towards one of these (price includes tax & shipping):

  • $100 Samsung HD103UJ Spinpoint F1
    • 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 32MB Cache

  • $105 Western Digital WD10EACS Caviar Green
    • 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache

  • $110 Seagate ST31000333AS Barracuda
    • 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 32MB Cache

  • $130 Seagate ST31500341AS Barracuda
    • 1.5TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 32MB Cache
I'm open for suggestions. The best value is certainly the 1.5TB Barracuda drive from Seagate, but I'm tempted to stick with Western Digital as I have a great track record with their drives, and I know they are very quiet drives, which I like. I'm definitely weary of Samsung drives, as I have heard iffy things about them in the past... but a $100 is certainly a great price for a 1TB drive w/32MB cache. 👍

I'm a seagate man personally. My new computer is the first time I went with a brand other than Seagate for a personal build. I grabbed a 640gb Western Digital and use my 1tb seagate as a secondary drive.

Between the two, I'll agree that the WD is extremely quiet for day-to-day use. In some respects, it's more quiet than the Seagate as the WD doesn't have as loud of an ambient hum when it's running.

Both great drives. Get the one with the longest warranty and you'll be golden.

I'm a Seagate man too, but I have no experience with the mega-sized drives. The largest I have is a 320GB. I have read reviews on some of the Samsung drives being very good on the heat and noise side, but again that was with the smaller sizes.

Out of those, I would probably go for the Western Digital or Seagate 1GB. The 1.5 seems like a gamble and the Samsung slightly less so.

I was Seagate until I released that they have that annoying so called life preserving feature called STIR which means it reads (or rather moves the head) nearly all the time when its idle... drove me nuts (wanting a silent PC).

That and the drive partially failed.. wouldnt register in the BIOS for a couple of days but for some odd reason it fixed its self and worked ever since.

I now prefer WD's... they are certainly quieter.

Robin.

Go with Seagate.. I love the 2 that i have and they are the first HD company to break the 1 terabyte mark.
