Let's see your HDR attempts. I usually hate it, but I had to capture a moment yesterday, sun came out after a heavy spring shower, everything was green. Used HDR to get the effect I was seeing, kinda satisfied with it :)

Here was my first HDR, took it while in HK:

Rarely use the effect though.

Usually all HDR's are done using PS or Photomatix which will blend the exposures automatically. It can be done manually but it is a real pain.

GIMP doesn't have a merge to HDR function but I found a plugin which can blend 3 exposures into a HDR. I'll dig the link up.

EDIT: Exposure Blend

Those pics are actually quite good! I find too many people use HDR to create 'artistic' shots which rarely, in my opinion, work.

Not all pictures are suitable to create (pseudo) HDR, the ones in my collection that were are lacking somewhat in the composition department. People (including myself) tend to forget that HDR is just an addition, you still need to pay attention. ;)

Here's one I took of Notre Dame, Paris. (Yes, I know the composition is crappy)

And another one of the Louvre:
