I took a proper hiatus from regularly logging miles in GT Sport pre-COVID, to firing up GT7 on the regular now. But that's not really what I wanted to share with the community...
I'd like you fine drivers to meet Dante_Rismo, my 10yo:
I had no intention of him becoming a fan of GT himself. Like most kids his racing started off with Mario Kart. I got him a Wii wheel to use with it just for fun, but then I saw that he quickly got the knack of it. So during my hiatus I built him his own wheel stand to try out my old bungee cord Thrustmaster wheel and let him loose in GT6. Once he got the hang of operating the wheels and pedals, I had him try to best my kart ghosts on a few tracks. It didn't take him long to do it, and I even remember not being able to beat his ghosts...
Eventually he outgrew that DIY rig while he still wasn't big enough to be using mine, so in some ways he also took a hiatus himself from GT.
Circa September 2020, how it started...
Fast forward to this past holiday season when I then realized that he looked like he's grown enough to be using my rig. And sure enough he was. Shortly after that I realized something even better: That he and I could actually race against each other online in our own lobby between my PS5 and PS4.
And let me tell you, I had no words to describe how happy I was when I first saw his name on his avatar doing karts laps ahead of me around Tsukuba. No words 🤯...but I have a feeling that if anyone would be able to imagine and appreciate the mind-blowing experience, it's you folks. At no point in time since I started playing Gran Turismo on the PS1 did I think, "you know, would be really cool to someday race against my own kid!"
And now here we are. 😊
...how it's going. 😎
Now it's just annoying that I can't even beat him around Tsukuba on the karts anymore 😆. Children's innate abilities are really amazing. He's a sponge absorbing any driving and racing craft I teach him. Honestly, I'm not surprised how quickly kids can pick up on things, but it still blows my mind seeing it happen in real time. We're now getting used to karting around Nordwand, and I'm also having him practice on Maggiore on bigger race cars (RB X2014 Junior) so he can get the hang of racing bigger vehicles and on larger/longer circuits. We try to log in an hour of practicing and racing each day of every weekend in our private lobbies, but if any of you care to help me kick my 10yo's butt, I wouldn't turn down your friend request...
