Right so I leave for Italy friday, and discovered an ugly secret on RyanAir's website.

8.7.1 You may carry strictly one item of cabin baggage per passenger (no allowance for infants) subject to certain weight and dimensions restrictions (click here for Regulations concerning Cabin Baggage). If you have a handbag, briefcase, laptop, airport shop purchases, camera etc. these must be carried in your single permitted item of cabin baggage. Additional/oversized cabin baggage will be refused at the boarding gate, or where available, placed in the hold of the aircraft for a fee at the level set out in our Regulations (click here for Regulations concerning Cabin Baggage). If you are unsure, check at the Bag-Drop desk before going through security.

Now my carry case is small enough to qualify as hand luggage, but I am not sure about it's weight. My college told me 15kg allowance. Ryanair website says 10kg...

So if my bag is overweight, can I then put it in with the main luggage? Problem is the size of it - as it is small enough to qualify as hand luggage - can I put it in with the main luggage if it needs be?

I really don't want a £40 charge especially when I only have £90 for the week....

Your buggered.
Michael O Leary has you in his grasp and will squeeze every last penny from your -already shallow- pockets.

I believe it's under 10kg. But does it only qualify as hand luggage?

Is this your only bag? What is wrong with putting it with the main luggage to be sure and having anything you need in a smaller bag?

Exactly what I am saying. Because its the dimensions of hand luggage does that mean it can only be classified as hand luggage?

Nope. You can check a bag of any size as far as I am aware.

They arent so bad if:
- you dont mind flying to/from an airport miles from the advertised city (see Barcelona, Paris, Florence)
- you dont mind paying ancillary fees on ancillary fees
- arent more than 6ft tall
- you dont care about sitting with your travelling companion or not
- dont need to be on time

Yeah, the general rule with RyanAir is that you pay for everything. At no point ask if your luggage is hand or hold, as they will probably charge you for both!

:P

So I did fly RyanAir from Edinburgh to "Frankfurt" (it's not really Frankfurt, but I didn't know until later. Oops. Still made it alright though.).

For something to be considered a hand luggage, it must meet both size and weight requirements. If your luggage does not met either, it must be checked. When I got to the ticket counter, they weighed my bag, and before boarding, they asked everyone who's bag looked close to the limit to put it through the handbag sizing test tray/holder thing. If your bag does not fit, they will not let you on the flight.

The flight is absolutely no frills, but if you eat before boarding, refuse all the stuff they try to shove down your throat, have your own entertainment and travel relatively lightly, they're not necessarily a bad choice. Any other means of travel for me on that particular journey would have taken 2-3 times as long.

I got screwed by Ryanair too, back when I was going to Berlin in January. The trip was being organised by my uni's German Society, and I forgot to tell them I was bringing hold luggage. :ouch:

Something small enough to be carry-on doesn't have to be carry-on. I think that was the question. If it's small enough but too heavy, then it will have to be checked, with the associated fee.
