So I finally got around to installing and trying S2U last night and I've been playing around with settings both in-game and on my GT3rs v2. The biggest problem I'm having with the car handling is there seems to be a lag of maybe 0.3-0.4 seconds between my steering or throttle input and the game's reaction.

I began to suspect this just from the handling of the cars I tested (VW GTI @ Nissan Silvia Aero) from hood cam but then I went into cockpit cam and saw the in-game wheel would react exactly as I suspected. Now, I really don't care if the in-game wheel is synced or not but the real problem is the car's reaction to input seems to be perfectly synced with the in-game wheel display, which is definitely lagging behind my own input. The same goes for throttle. I've tried all kinds of combinations of steering sensitivity etc but the lag remains constant regardless of settings. I also wondered if having my wheel connected through a hub was a problem so I switched to a direct connection and there was no improvement.

Has anyone else experienced this with other wheels or if you have a GT3rs v2 can you check this out and let me know if you've got the same problem ?

FYI - I definitely do not have the same problem in GT5.

I think the car handling could be dialed in reasonably well if I could get rid of the lag.....

There was a video for PS3 wheel settings on insidesimracing.com I think the site is called? Just google search inside sim racing and it'll come up, there is a video of a guy using a wheel setup and he goes through his settings, maybe that will help?

I have the Fanatec PWTS and tried the setting from InsideSimRacing but the input lag was too great. I have tried 900, 540 and 360 degrees of rotation inside the wheel but the game overrides these setting depending on the ingame settings. I'm using the 'Elite' model without assists and the default control setting which still needs tweaking but I am not fighting the steering wheel countersteering and forcefeed effects.

I will be trying the setting recommended at this link:

https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=196575

There are also commetns around here that those settings shown by the guy at inside sim racing are a base point. you may need to adjust them to you're liking.

I'm experiencing the same issues as well. I play with the DFGT on the PS3. I never had this hard a time driving compared to GT5, F1 2010 and Shift 1.

I started with those settings but I believe I had the same problem. I was just getting accustomed to the game though so I'll go back and verify asap.

The following item has been posted at the Shift 2 support forum which I am hoping fixes the issues.

See the following post:

Thanks for the link. I'll give that a try and post back with my findings.

Well, I have now tried every conceivable setting, including all those recommended here and elsewhere and there is only one possible conclusion. The input lag is very real and cannot be fixed via settings manipulation.

Does SMS even have a steering wheel in their QA dept ?? If they do I'll bet it's got a big layer of dust on it. What a huge disappointment.

The EA forums has a lot of bug reports on the same issues so I'm just hoping that they come up with a fix sometime soon. Discouragingly one of the bug reports mentioned that the same problem existed in Shift 1, so I'm not holding my breath for a fix anytime soon. If I could return this game opened I would do it without hesitation. Unfortunately EA just ripped me off for whatever loss I will incur in trade value. Lesson learned - no more EA games.

Sorry - I'm pissed. Rant officially over now.... ;)

I remember the bug in Shift1, where the Porches were bouncing around tracks like HipHop road warriors... I like Shift.. but then GT5 was coming, it was well worth the wait. I do wish Shift 2 to succeed competitively, for it will give great reasons for PD to improve upon GT5.

Do you experience the same lag w/ the gamepad as you do the wheel?

Good question - I'll go find out. Stay tuned .....

Update : Not as much. There is a slight lag but it doesn't seem to be as big as that from the wheel. I'm not accustomed to using a controller for driving games so I can't really comment on how it impacts the controller experience. Clearly there are many others here using wheels and controllers and are enjoying the game just fine. Unfortunately this seems to be a critical factor for my experience so there ya go ..... grrr.

What tv are you playing it on ? if it has game mode that reduces input lag just a thought as some screens have higher input lag than others.

I have written about this on other forum, people forget that the tv is as important as the game. Some tvs have terrible inputlag and is unplayable.
Some can be adjusted, like gaming mode or removing all motionsmoothness effects and so on. So check that out, it makes a huge differance.

I hope the lag is patched within six days, otherwise I'm returning Shift 2 towards operation flashpoint in late april..
The FFB effects are better in some aspects than in GT5, but the disconnected feeling is too much, and I'm not looking for a DS3 racing game.

Either way, a few months and I should have a PC along with LFS, Netkar pro, GT Legends and await GTR3 and Rfactor 2.. so shift really was just for temporary enjoyment anyway.

The only issue I'm having is the "weave" I get down the straight with certain cars. I first noticed it with "Pops" my Works Mk 1 Golf. But have experienced it again with some of the more beefy cars.

You're absolutely right and that was the first thing I spent time on, including going through the built-in video calibration to help make the graphics more presentable.

Unfortunately, using the exact same settings as I do for GT5 and F1 2010 yields radically different results. I do not experience any input lag on those games so I can safely rule out my TV as the culprit.

In the interest of completeness though I will go back in and triple-check all my TV settings just in case. I really do want to find a good setup for this game as the whole gameplay and career setup is very intriguing. I suspect though that at best I'll be waiting for a patch.

How did that guy at Sim Racing do such a good lap if the input lag is making the game unplayable?

Well, with all due respect to Shaun I really wouldn't call that a good lap. It was quite an achievement given the lag but certainly not a good lap.

Take a close look at the video again and you will see that it clearly demonstrates the exact same problem I'm having. Watch carefully at each corner entry. He needs to turn in early with the wheel in order to get the game to respond at the right time. He does this reasonably well but you will also notice that in almost every corner he immediately needs to put in a lot of corrections in an attempt to stay stable through the corner. That's fine if you're just struggling with an unruly car but the problem is the car does not react until shortly after each input is made, making corrections and accurate steering a guessing game.

I'll be very interested to hear some detailed feedback from ISR on this game as it stands right now.

I have a theory for all those fanboys that will eventually make it here to attack the credibility of anyone not happy with S2U.

Goes like this: 'it's your crappy TV giving you a lag while upscaling 720p to 1080p.' Explains why GT5 is perfectly fine.

Lol.

Having the same problem, will give it another shot today. If nothing helps - it's going on the CL while there is still demand.

I went back to check out my TV settings. To be fair - I did find the game setting in an obscure menu hidden away from the standard picture settings. It was turned off so I turned it on and also disabled every picture setting that could be doing any kind of processing. The result was a less than stellar picture but worth it if it would sort out the lag issue.

So : It did help - but only very marginally. This is good and bad news. Although the reduction in lag was very very minimal, it did improve the perception of responsiveness and control. However, it was still very very far from the direct input you experience in GT5 or F1 2010. The end result was not much different from the previous setup that got my panties in a bunch :)

The good news ? Well, it seems that even a minimal improvement in lag can have a noticeable impact on the interface between your hands and what the car does in the game. I'm hoping that means it would be possible for EA to patch this to a sufficient extent that any remaining lag would be effectively unnoticeable.

The handling of the cars on the other hand could be a different story but I'll reserve judgement on that until I feel like the physics engine in responding to steering and throttle input in real-time.

FYI - I submitted a support request to EA about this. I doubt I'll get a useful response (if any) but I'll post with any feedback I receive.

Glad I wasn't the only one experiencing weird steering wheel control. I have to turn in really early to at least stay on the track

Ok, spent another two hours or so, tested a crapload of settings, drove a couple of supposedly decent cars accessible through LE edition. I'm not playing this game until MP4 turns when I turn the wheel, and when I'm loosing road feel from the supposed sliding when I'm already past the slide.
I wonder how much would I have to complain to Amazon to take this junk back.

Just wanted to add my name to the list of players suffering from 'input lag'. I am using a DS3 and have tweaked the advanced control settings, set my TV to game mode, etc. When you check input via telemetry you see the game is receiving the commands just fine - unfortunately the car doesn't move in sync. Now if this is some physics model thing, or the way the developers perceive racing gameplay, then I am at a loss. I really feel like it is a bug or something that should fixed. My two cents.

Hmm, telemetry showing data that's not happening on screen really screws up the telemetry.
What else is the telemetry showing that's not happening on screen.
