Found this in a forum.
Quote:When the receiver (home theater) is set to On, you can hear sound output from the TV’s Optical jack. When the TV is displaying a DTV(air) signal, the TV will send out 5.1 channel sound to the Home theater receiver. When the source is a digital component such as a DVD and is connected to the TV via HDMI, only 2 channel sound will be heard from the Home Theater receiver. If you want to hear 5.1 channel audio, connect the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (OPTICAL) jack on the DVD player or Cable/Satellite Box directly to an Amplifier or Home Theater, not the TV.

He had problems, but fixed it somehow. He didn´t write how he did it... Can it be your TV settings? I don´t have optical on my TV, so I can\t check it

Thanks again Knukken :)

I think that post is referring to if you run the sound to a surround sound system via your tv (eg: ps3 connected to tv with HDMI then tv connected to surround by optical) the tv will only pass 2 channel sound on to the surround.

My Ps3 is connected directly to the surround via optical so this won't be my problem.

Thanks for going to that effort to find help though :)

This is really annoying. When someone have an issue with something i´m interested in, I really want to help to figure out what the problem is. And this is good to know in the future, since you are not the last one with this problem.

I´m probably going to do some b-spec later. I have to do a search then. Can´t spend time on it now while my son is up. He doesn´t like his "cage". Let us know if you figure this out :)

Cheers again Knukken, you were right, my setup is already as per those guides I'm afraid.

I don't think it's a physical problem, by that I mean I don't think it is related to hardware or the connections.

I'm pretty certain it must be related to GT5 specifically, so a problem with the way the MR cars are coded. The only doubt I have about this theory is that not everyone with a 5.1 set up has this problem, in fact those that have it are very much in the minority.

So I suspect it must be a bug that only rears it's head in certain circumstances. My next step will be to try and uninstall then reinstall the game, just need to find out how to do this without screwing up my save data!

Don't worry, I'll be sure to keep this thread updated, especially if I solve it so it can be helpful to others.

Cheers again, all backed up and the installed files deleted. Now waiting for it to reinstall, forgot how long it takes!

Uh-oh....

Now I can't get into the game. It's telling me I have insufficient space on the HDD (even though I have over 120gb free still according to the XMB).

Quick google suggests this may be a terminal problem that will require me to start from scratch, something to do with incompatibility of game save data due to poor coding of the updates by polyphony.

Very sick feeling to my stomach right now, I've piled hours into this game and potentially all my cars, progress, set ups, credits, everything could be gone :(

Am trying another full delete and reinstall to see if that cures it, here's hoping.

Phew!

The second uninstall/reinstall sorted it, save now working again. Boy was a a bit nervous!

All that effort hasn't cured my audio glitch though, MR cars are still silent in 5.1 :(

At the risk of looking crazy by talking to myself I'm posting again!

Cracked it!! :)

Out of desperation I decided to play with some buttons on my surround remote that I hadn't played with before.

One of these was a system menu button. Wrongly, I had assumed that the system menu I'd always used was the only one available an that this button was just another way of getting there. Wrong!

It's a separate menu and within it I found the 'dec. Mode' setting. In here you have the choice of AFD Multi, AFD STD, pro logic, pro logic II music and pro logic II movie.

Mine was set AFD multi, which according to the manual should auto decode the signal and use all speakers. The manual also said thar AFD STD, does the same but only uses speakers relevant to the native signal (eg: if the source is stereo then it will only use the front two speakers).

So I decided to give AFD standard a shot and.... Success!!!

It seems the DAV AFD Multi setting can't correctly decode GT5's surround sound signal but the AFD STD mode can.

So for anyone else out there having this issue with a Sony DAV surround sound system, this is your solution right here :)

Thanks to all who have tried to help me through this thread, it's greatly appreciated.

I'm now off to carry on enjoying GT5!

Nicely done. Yeah AFD Multi just takes a 2channel sound and replicates it through all the speakers, so it would have been taking your 2 front speaker channels and outputting them in the rear speakers as well.

AFD Standard just puts out what your putting into your system, always the best choice. I'm glad you've got it sorted.

So much trouble for such an easy fix lol. If I were you, I´d never figured it out! lol. Good to see you fixed it.

Is there any changes in the other cars as well? I hear engine sound from all my cars in the rear speakers. It´s going to annoy my girlfriend when she is trying to sleep on the sofa in the evenings, but it´s not me trying to sleep :)

Tell me about it! And I'd been scratching my head over it a long time before posting on here too, typical!

Yes, the whole game sounds better now. I guess the MR cars just made it obvious because they went silent, but it seems I've been missing half the sound from the game all along.

Also means the same has been happening for my bluray movies and any other audio going via my surround too, guess I'll just have to watch all my movies again to experience them properly :)

Thanks man, I've been keeping a quiet look in on this forum, good to see your problem was solved..... however this wasn't my problem, I've contacted sony about my problem, it wasn't the settings in the amp menu. The problem was a faulty wireless reciever in the rear amp, meanning the amp wasn't recieving all the information it should have. I've got it fixed and all's good!! :)

I knew about those settings.....

As, bizarrely, I don't have an encyclopaedic knowledge of surround sound settings.

Still, I know now and that setting is indeed full of win.

me to lol.Well, not all movies... HAven´t had the problem with any other games or movies. But after I set up the speakers correct, everything became so much better. Have you checked your speaker settings after solving the problem?

Try the Alfa Romeo GIULIA TZ2 carrozzata da ZAGATO CN.AR750106 '65 if/when you get it with surround :)

The speaker settings should be all good as they were set up using the set up mic that it came with and the test tone did come out of all the speakers correctly for that. Certainly sounds like it's working correctly now (had to give Tron Legacy another watch to test it :)). May be worth a double check though.

Not got that car yet but it's on my list. It's one of the £20mil cars or close to isn't it? I'm a fair way off having that sort of cash sadly!

It's 10mil, and its a prize car, you'll get it along the way..:)

Cheers guys,

That historic racing car cup is a pain, I've got nothing that is good enough to win it, best I can manage is 3rd in my RM Z28 Camaro.

I'm pretty sure you get the Alfa from B-spec. I won those races using the Toyota 7 race car, which B-Spec Bob can win in Like the Wind.

If you happen to come across a Chaparral 2d in the UCD, snatch it up--its a sweet car and capable of winning that series too.

You get the Jaguar XJ13 Race Car '66 when you win the Indianapolis 500 miles Enduro, unlocked at Level 28. This car will win the races, B-spec with it is a bit harder tho, so look out for the Chaparrel 2j Race car '70, its around 15mil. It can be won with the Jag tho :)

Cheers for the tips guys

Day off tomorrow, so seeing as L A Noir seems to be melting consoles I'll skip that for now and get some more GT5 in :)
