Higher levels of damage for IRL and NASCAR?

What are your thoughts on this?

I wasn't that impressed with the level of damage demonstrated already. Apparently the reason it isn't anything like (for example) burnout, is because of the 'manufacturers' not wanting there cars damaged in the game..' etc. But NASCAR and IRL don't really fall into this category as they destroy cars live on TV all the time. So do you think there will be a different level of damage for certain classes such as these?

I would be very disappointed to lose control of an IRL car and go flying into the wall at 200 and only see a few scratches. The same applies to nascar.

Obviously a lot of people play this game for the driving element only - and not to intentionally crash, but it would nice to see crazy wrecks and pile ups too (from a gaming point of view). It's always been a big element in motor racing so I hope they do it properly.

My vote: NASCAR, WRC/Rally and IRL will suffer the most damage.

Production cars will likely just suffer dents, scratches, etc.

This is pretty much confirmed that you can completely "total" Nascar and Rally and I assume now Indy cars. The production vehicles can be damaged and dented but I have a feeling no "car parts" will fall off and the interior will look fine.

In Nascar and Rally the interior will be "damageable" too which sounds freaking sweet.

I hope we see a little more than a door opening and bumper hanging off anyway.. and that was on a WRC car

You forgot Super GT ;)

I believe production cars will only suffer scratches (and mechanical damage). Dents and everything else for the race cars (170) in the series mentionned above.

I think ALL race cars will have an extensive amount of damage, but production cars will have the usual scratches and dents.

just curious, does a nascar have just one model or are there many variations? I am not that familiar with nascar so I am sorry if it seems like a silly question.. I presume the different liveries will not all count as a different model..

Chevrolet, Dodge, Toyota, and Ford all have slightly different bodies.

For production cars, I think this is what you should expect:

Dents of all sorts on the front bumper, doors, hood and rear.

Scratches, paint being totally removed from the above^ parts.

And lastly, crooked/ loose bumpers.

That's it (and that's not being sarcastic).

GT is far too real and manufacturers are far too intelligent to let a Lamborghini flip over, yet alone have its bumpers falling off onto the track.

Now, the racing cars are another story. Expect chaos, especially in the cock-pit! Should be entertaining.

I'm not too sure we can expect chaos lol.. it's not Grid or Dirt.

Oh if only they let codemasters design a damage model :P

This carries back to the old quote about 170 cars with full damage and the rest with less or no damage, but I think that is gonna break down to race cars have full damage (ie more than scratch and dent, things falling apart and falling off possibly) while non race cars will have much more limited visible damage.

I would think all cars will have mechanical damage that allows them to be rendered virtually undriveable (ie crawl along and svere steering problems).

I really want to see wheels coming off the IRL cars. It's actually a complete joke if that can't do that much.

Do you guys think the wheels will fall off if you clip the wall at high speed? (like F1CE)
EDIT: Too late

Not even iRacing features wheels coming off, so we won't have to be a shamed if it's not in I guess.

I can't wait to see the wall riding with open wheeled cars

I had just assumed open wheeled cars would be restricted to mechanical damage, or maybe the bs scape and dent damage we have seen in the demos.

Also, most cars, even NASCAR, have their wheels tethered so that they will come off, but stay close to the car and not roll down the track or into the stands.

Really, it is damage... it is not much of a deal at all. Most will turn it off after a "few races" as a PD delegate put it.

I hope wheels can come off, but I sure as hell hope it won't be as easy as in F1CE. I could barely scrape the wall sometimes and the wheel would come flying off.

Although it does make you mighty careful getting back to the pits when you know that loose wheel only needs a jiggle and it's done.

#1a - Regarding the damage seen at TGS, here is the Kaz TGS interview with Joystiq:

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/28/tgs-2009-interview-gran-turismo-5s-kazunori-yamauchi/

Q: "How long did it take to implement damage into Gran Turismo 5?"
A: "It took two months to get to where we're at. So it wasn't a matter of difficulty. It was just when we initiated it."

Q: "How realistic will damage be?"
A: "To end with the race with a crash, we can do that now. But I don't think we'll ever have serious crashes, in which the cars are just torn apart into bits or just flattened into a few inches high. Things like that are something I just don't think we'll ever do."

#1b - Autoweek interview, SEMA 2009

http://www.autoweek.com/article/20091103/SEMA/911039983

Q: "That must be ripe for wrecking cars. Does GT5 include damage to the cars?"
A: "Yes, and the demo has it."

Q: "Is it difficult to include that feature?"
A: "It was not very hard. It only took us two months to get where we are now with the damage."

#2 - Regarding Nascar damage, here is something right from...here:

https://www.gtplanet.net/yamauchi-interview-reveals-more-on-gt5-development/

"In addition, there are cars from NASCAR and World Rally. Speaking of NASCAR, Yamauchi noted that the deformation and damage in these high-speed races will be absolutely amazing and true to life, with turns, spins, rollovers, and so on. We will have to see to believe."

I just want GT5 to be released as soon as possible with no damage. You can always buy a chainsaw and having fun on your hummers with it

And you can take your cheap shot at Americans and stick to some noodles, and some olives, and eat it

This pleases me greatly
