About the the Birth Place thing I was talking about that they invented
drifting as drifting. Meaning that they were the one to put name on it and
while I know that Sprints & Midgets Late Models have been sliding around dirt
ovals across America for meny meny meny years now but thats on dirt not
roads like the D1 & Formula Drift and like they did in the MT's in Japan.

As I said in my last post, you're correct when you say that drifting series like D1 and Formula D were invented by Japan.

However, the idea of doing controlled oversteer for fun, which is what you're referring to with the Japanese street racers in the mountains, is hardly a new idea at all. Driving enthusiasts around the globe had been doing that for years and years. It was just commonly referred to by a different name -- powersliding.

Furthermore, the reason why the street racers started doing it is because they saw all of their heroes in professional racing doing it -- racing tires in the 1970's weren't very good by today's standards, so using a bit of oversteer while going around a corner was often the fastest way. The problem here is that professional racers everywhere were using that technique, not just in Japanese racing.

Indeed, I used to powerslide my matchbox cars around my bedroom when I was a kid.

Haruna(Akina), Akagi, Myogi, Usui, Are all very good japanese mountain passes for both uphill and downhill and thats just in the Gunma prefecture theres also nagano and alot of others outside of there like Shomaru, Nikko (irohazaka) and Happogahara. Just naming some of the japanese passes i know of.

Why are everybody talking about drifting and Japan and other countries. This thread is about the PIKES PEAK Hillclimb in the U.S. Not about asphalttracks or drifting.

Well Pikes peak will be asphatly pretty soon, so it'll be more like a mountain road.

The topic began to include other types of mountain roads at about post #4 or so.

These days, any reference to any hillclimb or mountain road of any kind will bring out some comment about Japanese touges and drifting at some point or another.

I'll be honest I've never heard of Pikes Peak, and I never played GT2. So I know nothing of the course, but from what I can see on their website, it does look an interest course. I'm a bit suprised it got dropped tbh.

I'd love to see loads of point to point racing in GT5, not just for the rallying, but for hillclimbs as well.

I'm a big fan of point to point racing, as racing against the clock IMO is harder than racing against an opponent, as you have nothing to gauge your progress on, other than a time. Having someone up ahead gives you a "visual traget" to aim for.

This should bring you up to speed.

Climb Dance

Edit: Autoweek had an article over Pikes Peak. They mentioned that they are paving about a mile per year, so it will be completely paved by 2012. What is weird is that this year is rained and snowed on the mountain, causing them to lower the finish line several miles down the mountain. It sure didn't look like the place ever saw rain, let alone snow, in the above video.

Pikes Peak Hill Climb should definitely have a comeback. I loved that track back in GT2, because it is pretty much how a rally stage should be. Point A to Point B. Minus the figure-8-styled Special Stages of course.

I actually never heard about that it is going to be paved, but yeah, like somebody has said before, it would change EVERYTHING. I still would like to see it, though.

I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but Forza has some nice uphill and downhill courses, and they're even divided into stages. Maybe GT5 can incorporate some of that. Pike's Peak shouldn't be a problem.

pikes peak was an awsum track, but i was to young to even remeber racing on it. It looks like a really challenging course, they should bring it back for sure!

I think they will have PP in GT5. The question is will they have all the good cars on the new game, such as the Audi S1 and other hillclimbers on steroids. If not, however, there is still the RalliSport Challenge series to offer that. I also hope that the rally and iceracing aspect of the game improves alot. Man that sucked in GT4. Its why I havent gotten my Super license yet :grumpy:

Going back to what live for speed said, I'm sure the Stelvio Pass is world famous enough to be included. That would be my favourite track ever if it was included.

Hell yes.

Stelvio? Hell yes!!

That must be hell on earth to drive in a 800hp RWD car.... :dopey:

This pass is just sick.........but I would like to have the mountains around it snow/ice covered but with dry tarmac. That would be heaven.

Why are they paving Pike's Peak? I always thought that rocketing up a mountain in cars that produce more power than some commercial airliners on a road that offers no grip with no safety barriers between you and the shortcut down the mountain was what Pike's Peak was all about! Where's the fun if you aren't sliding out at 60mph to just a foot and a half away from your death :D?

Saftey issues, which you just pointed out. People have gone off the edge in the past.

That would rock. What would really be great though is if, after the game came out they could continue making tracks and have them available for download. So maybe we could get the Baja or parts of Dakar!

Pike's Peak? That's not hillclimbing.

THIS is hillclimbing:

Indeed they do, I've seen loads of that stuff, they build some pretty amazing off roaders.

Actually, I think I heard or read somewhere that the paving was for environmental reasons, i.e. the dust and rocks were wreaking havoc on the local plant and animal life. Why the green lobby waited until just recently to start raising a stink about this is anyone's guess...

On a related note, this may have been mentioned in another thread, but the new Colin McRae game is expected to have the full Pikes Peak course:
