The RA106 was the first car built by Honda since their acquisition of BAR in 2005, and was the first time Honda entered F1 as a constructor since 1968.. It was driven by Rubens Barichello, who joined from Ferrari, and Jenson Button, who had been with BAR for 3 years.

Although the year was a significant improvement on BAR's 2005 season, Honda was unable to compete for the world championship. The car was quick in testing and qualifying but less so in races. A performance slump mid-season led to the team parting ways with the car's designer, Geoff Willis, and hiring the inexperienced Shuhei Nakamoto.

Things managed to improve after the German GP, with Button's first victory in Hungary, with Button being the stronger driver that season and it was felt he deserved Honda's first win in their return to F1. Honda finished strongly with a run of points finishes and a podium finish for Button at the Brazilian GP.

The team finished 4th in the constructors championship with 86 points and Jensen Button finishing 6th in the drivers standings with 56 points.
