Maybe now the 2nd Chechen war will finally end.

Russian television showed Patrushev meeting Monday with President Vladimir Putin to tell him about the operation in Ingushetia -- a republic bordering Chechnya -- in which Basayev was killed early Monday.
Russian agents exploded a truck bomb next to several cars in which Basayev and other rebels were riding, according to the Interfax news agency, quoting Ingush Deputy Prime Minister Bashir Aushev.

I am, however, surprised that Russia didn't manage to accomplish this sooner, if they are actually the ones behind his death (I'm sure they have tried to).

It's been a long, bloody battle; Chechnya and Russia have been going at it literally since the 19th century, for one reason or another. Every time Russia flexes its muscle on them, Chechen rebels strike back in even more gruesome and cowardly ways, like murdering innocent children in their school.

This is not to say that all Chechens are like that, but a lot of extremists want to form their own state, and have wanted independence for more than 100 years now. I don't see a quick end to this any time soon, no cease fires have been called for a while now.
