How does handicap work?

I've been wondering how handicap works and search didn't bring up any results.

Just wondering how handicap is calculated, is it solely based on weekly TT's and adjusted according to the results, or is it calculated on any events entered?

I noticed in the team table for the World Cup race that my handicap is 4.542, does this mean my overall performance is of Div 4 standard?

And in week 127 TT my handicap is 5.040, is this just to show my performance for that event only?

This is a quote from the GTP Registry discussion thread found here:

0.000 is intended to be a theoretical minimum possible time.

The handicap is calculated as follows:
step 1: take the fastest 50% of the submissions
step 2: find the mean and standard deviation of this subset
step 3: two standard deviations faster than this mean is the "zero par"
step 4: zero par is assigned a handicap value of 1.000
step 5: various multiples of the standard deviation are added to this zero par time to find 0.000, 2.000, 3.000, etc.

Your handicap is a compilation of all the TTs you have entered. This does not include any races in the Online Events section.

On paper yes. People improve over time and sometimes the handicap doesn't reflect that if you don't do enough TTs.

Yep.

Thanks, now I understand.

I was just starting to think about not doing the TT's and concentrate on the races/special events more, looks like I'd better not do that.

(not enough days in the week :P )
