I know how it is in real life, but what about gt5? I tried the seasonal event drift trial today with both a rwd car and an awd car. The rwd had average angle, good speed, countersteer the whole way, but sometimes the points would just stop adding up. In my awd car, I had ken block style where i had so much angle that it would be impossible to save in a rwd car. The same thing still happened though. It wasn't all the time, and it had no relation to speed.

It scores you on how close you can get to the racing line whilst maintaining a 45 degree angle to it. Which is why I've only ever done a handful of scored runs and now advise people not to bother with it and to spend their time drifting online :)

I'm pretty sure the closer you get to he inside curb the faster your points go up like if you have one wheel riding the red and White curb all the way round you will get crazy big points!! The angle is a little messed up tho like you say if you get too far out the game just thinks you have spun or lost control. I'd love them to patch that as Iv got some mad angles before but no points for it.

ok I'll try those things and mostly I just drift online with my friends. As for the thinking you've spun, I could see it thinking that with my R33 because I can go over 90 degrees and save it, but it's bs in my S2000. I've got some high angles but not like I'm out of control. I really hope they patch it.

Let us know how you get on. I was watching a few clips on YouTube of some D1GP dRifting a while ago and one guy practically came into the corner sliding backwards and the crowd and judges went insane. I'll have a look for the clip later but unfortunately gt5 does not score you for big angles in fact I dare say they reward mild angles only

Reverse entry! :D

I don't think there's any way around the shortcomings of an automated drift scoring system, unfortunately :(

The best was is to just have a judge or panel of judges watching online for competition. Beyond that...well, you know if you tore it up, right? :)

Yeah that's very true an automated system will always be flawed but it would be nice of it not to drop all your points for going "beyond the point of no return" when often we can and do return from that point in full control. Well when I say full control I mean only just clinging on to the drift for dear life, but you know what I mean. I'm quite sure it would be reasonably easy to patch but I get the feeling that enhancing the drifting element to this game is not a priority

That entry was insane ha I need to learn that in a rwd car. I didn't get to trying it today, school keeps me busy. I'll probably try it tomorrow, and I'll experiment with best angle, how much speed is considered, and the best line.

excactly. I had an awesome run, only to be ranked barely in the top 3,000.

I think the drift scoring in GT5 is limited by the fact the speedo is linked to the forward motion of the car. I.E.: if you enter a drift at 45mph and actually IRL maintain that speed, your speedo will not reflect that. The speedo will decrease as your angle increases and then increase as your angle decreases even know you were really going the same speed the whole time.

It is only recognizing the forward vector of the car and seems to completely ignore the sideways vector. That is why at extreme angles with a fair amount of speed your speedo says something like 10mph, because that is all your forward motion actually is, the rest of your speed is sideways, which GT5 evidently doesn't care about. This is also why GT5 appears to reward shallower drift angles, because your forward speed is higher hence more points.

Hopefully that makes sense.

id be guessing that this is nearly next to impossible to do this on GT5, maybe not the actual drift, but how he manages to save himself from spinning out... would have to be an insane driver and insane tuning to keep thereselves on the track without spinning out (in game of course)...

RWD backward entry? of course its possible in gt5 lol (that's why i love drifting in GT5 so much!)
Tsukuba is a backward entry friendly track,
almost every corner on that track allow u to do it, and yea, i'm not talking about just 90 degrees or with sloppy lines.

High speed backward entry will make the car lag on other people screen, kind of a bug

I think it's because of the way online works. I'm sure it pre-empts what others cars will do based on their current speed, direction and location on track. This would cut down on the amount of data being sent back and forth. So when a car is going backwards at 90 mph it has a fit and says 'not possible'. I think.
