How much time can a wheel shave off?

I just bought a DFGT today. After using it for for only 10 minutes I was a bit worried because I could not keep a car from spinning out. I went back and did the first 2 sets of licenses and started getting silver and gold much more easily.

With the D3, I only had 3 golds, 14 silvers and 43 bronze out of all the license tests and now have 12 golds and 8 silvers out of the first 20 tests. Total time using the wheel is about 3 hours so it has already started shaving time for me.

I have put in 10 laps at R246 Tokyo in a 787B w/race soft tires and felt much faster. First hot lap was 1:33:xx and 8th - 10th laps were consistent 1:27:xx. I'll have to go back and run those laps with the D3 to compare but it sure felt faster and much more consistent and easier to run the edge of grip. The high speed shallow chicane was much easier and I think is the area where I was much faster.

So far, I love the DFGT and the brake pedal doesn't bother me like I thought it would.

After a couple days getting used to it, I'm now basically where I started. My times with the wheel are about on par with my times with the controller. My Cape Ring record is about half a second faster with the controller. I hope I continue to improve, but I really have no idea if I will. I'm convinced that my line is just about perfect. Now I just have to figure out how to carry a little more speed through the turns. Learning curves are frustrating!

What I would suggest is look at the videos of the fastest guys on the leaderboard and note what they are doing. For example, I looked at Hunk's video of Cape Ring and shaved off about a second in two days!

Finally, the license tests were a big help to me in getting more comfortable with the wheel. I even got all Golds after a lot of practice.

if someone is on the edge of getting past the first round on a game pad I have a DFP I don't use anymore I can give them as a prize for their determination.

Wow that's a nice offer. I would have jumped on it before I bought my DFGT.

DFGT Received. So far I like it. Brake seems to be ok and not as bad as expected. What fedback sensitivity are you guys using?
I initially had it at 7 with my DFPro but lowered it to 5 to experiment. It's helped especially since anything higher and my coffee table starts to wobble.

I'm using 10 for sensitivity now. When I first got it, I set it all the way down to 1 because it was awkward but the more I got used to it, I realized the higher the sensitivity was the more contrast you feel between grip and the moment the car loses grip.

Well, I've had my wheel for 72 hours. I have probably put in 15 hours of GT time with it. I still haven't hit my fast laps I had previously done with my DS3. I am a lot more consistent however. I have gotten a 1:06 flat on Tsukuba (1:05.7 best), 1:22.xxx on Rome (1:21.xxx previously) and have posted a few 2:49's on Cape, but that is a full second and a half off my previous fast lap there.

Hopefully I start making some more progress throughout the week.

For me i would have to say a wheel doesnt shave off. It cuts off. I gain allot of time with a wheel. I cant play this game with a controller. Of course it is different for other players. Some players are actually quicker with the controller. To me playing with a controller is playing a video game. Using a wheel is what makes a driving sim a sim. It shows true actual driving ability much better than a controller. Anyone that makes it to the finals of the GT Academy using a controller isnt going to make it far in the finals.

My thoughts, are that everyone is faster with the wheel, but most people don't want to take the time for the learning curve which can be a long time since the force feeback is off setting at first. I just got my DFGT last week and after around 4-5 days of 4 hr a piece (though saturday i put in much more i think since i was up until 8am running Tsukuba) i can honestly say my times are far better and I am much more consistent. At first I didn't care for force feedback, and couldn't figure out the counter steer because the wheel kinda goes limp and feels like you aren't doing anything when you countersteer, but in actuality you are still countersteering and aiming the wheels when it goes limp, its just a hell of a learning curve for these things, but well wroth it specially if you want to get higher up. I went from the 300 ranking on Rome/Reverse to 82nd with the wheel. Also, theres more precision in the wheel for turning, and same goes for break and acceleration, since theres more range of motion, though if you setup your controller right you can get pretty close, though I still think the pedals are better, but again another learning curve. If you are trying for pro times, a wheel is a must.

You ain't kidding on the learning curve. Just got a wheel today for the first time and it probably took a good 20 minutes before I could even get it around the track without spinning it out.

I'm going to try and keep at the wheel even though I'm already wishing I could go back to having my feet kicked up and relaxed playing with the pad. But I know the wheel is faster, and since going fast is the whole point for me, guess I have to adapt.

I guess I am the only one who still thinks I am faster with the controller on this game than with the wheel. In Forza, I was pretty close in times with both, but in the higher powered RWD cars, I was much faster with the controller. In GT5 I am a lot faster with the controller with every car.

And yes, I spent Time with the wheel. The last couple of months of Forza 2, and the entire 3 months I played Forza 3.

I tried doing some laps in the 787B with no traction control with the DS3. Hahahahaha I was all over the road, this one guy was smoking me in a slower car and I know they were all laughing at me like "wow this guys has that fast car and cant even handle it". I now officially suck with the DS3.

I forgot to mention that earlier in my post, the other trick to the learning curve is relearning the license tests, honestly, go for gold if you can on the ones you already did in B, but in A and higher really try to learn those, it seemed to make the biggest difference for me
