This is a simple but effective guide to building a 11.99 or better FF car on the 1/4 mile. It can be applied to turbo or NA cars, big or small, V8/V6/4cyl. It's not really hard when you crack the secret and here's the lowdown on it.
#1 - TCS IS YOUR BEST FRIEND!!
Unlike 4WD and RWD which don't need tons of TCS to take off, a FWD is very different. Get your done up FWD car and set the TCS on 2 and do a run. Then set it on 5 and do a run. Then do the same run with a TCS of 7 or 8. The fact you can't get enough weight over the front wheels means you need this for a faster time. Don't overdo it though, as too much TCS will bog the car down and give you a slow launch, 0-100km/h time and 1/4 time.
#2 - BALLAST IS BEAUTIFUL!!
As you need all the weight on the front wheels anyway for a FWD, the bonus of having the 200kg on the front forcing the tyres to get some traction helps with the 1/4 mile times.
#3 - LOCK THE SUSPENSION!!
Unlike RWD's that like a bit of ass dumpage on launch, FWD's can't have the weight shift backwards at all.....so what you do with the dampers is set them all on 10, except the front bound, which you set to 2 to allow the front suspension to travel up and down. Set the spring rates on the back to double what you have on the front at minimum, as you want all the weight to stay on the front. On top of that, put the front height at it's lowest and the rear height at it's highest to change the center of gravity over the front wheels more.
#4 - DOWNFORCE PLEASE!!
Add all the downforce to the front to keep that weight on the front end, especially at higher speeds....you can gain anywhere from 0.05 to 0.15 from the traction you gain from the front spoiler being so hardcore. Don't give the rear spoiler anything though.
#5 - LEARN TO LAUNCH!!
As much as it is easy to just keep your finger on the button, redline it to tomorrow and then watch the green hit....but I can guarantee you aren't getting your power down to the ground, regardless of how tall your 1st gear is. Keep your gearing sensible and look to launch the motor anywhere between the peak torque and peak power of the motor to get a decent launch.
#6 - WATCH YOUR EARLY SPEED!!
I'll be blunt on this one.....if you can't get your acceleration going quickly, you will not get the quick times. Some cars use their torque and others use light weight and power. My Accord to 160km/h is nearly 0.200sec quicker than my SRT-4 but only 0.007 quicker at the 1/4 mile due to it's acceleration and traction. But if you can get your car going from 0-100km/h within 5 seconds than you stand a good shot at getting an 11sec pass from any car.
#7 - ADJUST YOUR GEARING!!
From this, it all depends on what ratios you like........I can't supply everything to you.
Now this method has been applied to over 20 FF cars from the Accord (11.684) to the Taurus SHO (11.998), and includes 7 cars that go sub 11.90 (Accord, SRT-4, DC5 ITR, EP3 CTR, VW Golf V, Ford Focus, FTO GP-R) and from power ranges as low as 325hp +100hp shot (Nissan Primera Te @ 11.923) and as much as the SRT at 511hp + 70hp shot.
Have fun and get racing. Mafs!!
