Get a small car that gets good gas milage. Trust me. Some places pay $1 for every delivery (dont forget, you get tips, always be sure to remember to be there when an order comes from a Rich part of the delivering area). Get one of those old ford hatchbacks or something. You'll be doing alot of driving if there arent too many delivery people...
Been a pizza delivery driver. Get a heap (a car that isn't too pretty nor does it "owe" anybody anything) that runs good and doesn't use much gas. In fact, if you can afford it get a car that you can use exclusiviely as the "pizza wagon". Because, after a week of delivering your car will smell like pizza forevermore. Also, after a year of driving delivery, it will likely be ready to be a large rusty planter, or to be parted out. Also be prepared to increas the liability, and collision coverage on your car, most places require it. And set aside money from your tips for extra vehicle maintanence. The stop and go will be murder on your car.
You'll also want a working radio. Trust me. It'll be a life-saver.
Oh yeah, The rich side of town is not where you'll get the best tips. Those people didn't get rich by giving all their money away.
What you will discover is that a lot of people that order, order often. Get a notebook. Write down each delivery, with each address, any discounts you had to give, and what you were tipped.
Trust me, at the end of the night when you cash out, with your log in hand, you can't be cheated out of a delivery fee, or lose any tip money if you had to give a discount. You will also have a good idea of who is a good tipper and who is not. We had a guy who would order infrequently, but he was likely to pay with a 20 for a $6 dollar order and tell you to keep the change. (Needless to say, every driver in the place knew that address.)
I've had nights where I made less at the end of the night than the number of deliveries I made. That stopped happening when I started keeping track with my log.
Also, unless you live in a town with no "bad sections" you might want to reconsider delivery driving. Don't even ask!
If you live in a town where the local pizza place has a "guaranteed" delivery time, be prepared for all sorts of foolishness on the street. I have been followed, cut off, had people slow down to a crawl in front of me so I would be late and have to give the pizza away, or give a discount. I've found my self face to face with large ominous looking dogs, little snarling dogs, naked and near naked people (few of them pretty), driven in snow with no heat, been pranked, delivered a pizza to McDonalds, etc. The stories I could tell you are the makings of a great comedy routine.
I used to love to drive. After driving delivery for 2 or 3 years, I still prefer to ride if given the option. (and it's been nearly ten years since I made a delivery). My wife asks me to drive at night, as my wife's night vision isn't as good as mine. And I drive on trips. I have become that guy that doesn't find or make up extra errands that require me to be in the car. If I have several things to do, I will choose a course that provide the least amount of time in the car. Amazingly, I love to play GT3.
