How to improve speed sensation

I have a bit of a problem in that I get no speed sensation at all while driving the prologue which make it very hard to judge the speed at which to take corners. As part as it´s not that fun to drive in 200 and it feels like driving in 70 km/h max.

There is no fov adjustments that could help it seems. As for view I have a 16:10 24" widescreen close to the wheel for as realistic view as possible. On my other sims I have no problem with this. In fact I have a hard time driving the GT Pro cars in evolution since they are just to fast I get scared. But even the slow WTCC cars have more speed sensation then the fastest cars in the Prologue. Mini cooper is about the same as the fastest here.

I don't have this problem at all, whats it like for you on London or Eiger?

I think it has to do with screen size. The videos of Kaz show him racing on a 40" Sony LCD, and if thats what they are tuning the game to, then you would have to be that size or larger to get a good sense of speed from. I am assuming its to do with screen size as i have noticed a difference going from a 40" to a 46" screen. Also from PS2 days with games like Pro Evo Soccer, running on my 21" CRT Screen and moving to a 42" Plasma the speed difference was incredible!

Sound is important for a sense of speed (for me). Get a good surround and pump up the volume.

+1 Sound is a good sense of speed for me too. And make sure you turn off the music! It will only distract you and cause mistakes, from what I've experienced with the music on.

I might be wrong, but shouldn't increased screen size (with the same refresh rate) actually make the game slower? I think it has more to do with the difference in refresh rate between TVs and computer screens.

If oqvist is playing on a computer screen, which I presume judging from size and screen ratio, the problem is most likely that his screen is running at 60 hz (compared to 50 hz on most EU TV-sets), thus making the game "smoother" which also leads to a lack of speed?

By the way, are Japanese and American TV-sets still running at 60 hz by default, or has it changed since the "HD-evolution"

All proper HDTVs have 60hz.
I play on a SAMSUNG 2493hm and have no problems with the speed feeling at all.

I agree, Anyway if your driving cars like the Ford GT...thats all the music you need. :D:tup:

Thanks for all suggestions... as for refresh rate it´s the other way around I do believe. My PC monitor is 60 hertz as my LCD TV. When I was on CRT I could experiment with F1 2001 for example. F1s are pretty damn fast. There was a noticable increase in speed sensation running at 100 hertz rather then 85. Even more so at 120 hertz but not much... Apart from improved smoothness it also give you more "depth" which I guess is the key. I guess most that have tvs with a good 120 hertz mode, be it CRT of any kind at least have noticed this :)

As for bigger or smaller monitor well I get better speed sensation on my 32" if I move it a bit farther away... Since otherwise I can´t take in the entire picture. But my computer monitor is just sharper which makes it easier to find braking points and such. It´s also more real since I can have it right next to my wheel without being to big and work more like a windshield. One solution that surely would help is a triple screen setup so you get more of the peripheral vision but I don´t know if GT 5 supports that? I can´t afford it anyway. I could run hood view as well since it puts you closer to the ground but I preferr the cockpit view.
I do have a new surround system which rocks but that also doesn´t really increase the speed sensation though it make you more immersed of course.

Seriously this thing enhace the experience and is relatively cheap, works great for feeling the fear factor on high speeds.

That's why i race in bumper cam view. the sense of speed is much greater, also you can judge corner speed much better. I love the cockpit view but for an all out speed lap there is no substitute for bumper cam.

I think a lot can be gained if PD introduce more head movement in the cockpit view, so you really feel acceleration as your (virtual) head is thrown back etc.

Well I have a LFE which is like 10x as powerful as the gamer. Give me more road feel but doesn´t help to much with speed sensation... It´s more a visual thing for me meaning monitor, in game visuals and how you set up the fov and such. I will probably have to start to run more from the hood view. As mentioned shake cameras like those simbin has and upcoming NFS: Shift certainly would help if they do it good :).

What fps is GT 5 Prologue running at btw? I guess it´s pointless to hope for 60 fps but you would think you would have higher fps in hood view?

GT5p runs at 60fps during gameplay and switches to 30fps during replays due to the extra motion blur effect and other effects that get added.

It makes sense though that bumper cam would have a faster fps since the car no longer needs to be rendered. I dont know for sure but in-car view still feels as silky smooth as bumper cam to me despite its weaker "speed" effect, so its probably also locked at 60fps.

im at 0.196. thats fast apparently. in school we had to do a reaction time test, one person dropeed a rulwer from a certain height above your hand, they let go and then you catch it. then you measure the distance of the bottom of your hand to the bottom of the ruler. everyone had a reaction time of 0 because they caught it before the ruler got past the bottom of their hand!

There is people that run quadruple 360s... Of course it´s worth to have one 360 rendering the rear mirror. But well I ain´t that nutty about it. So GT 5 P does run in 60 fps so then it shouldn´t be that at least if that´s true :)

That is run through a seperate computer. It takes the image coming through the HDMI cable and splits it into 3. You also dont loose any FPS this way as there is a PC doing the hard work for the PS3/Xbox.

But I have just Brought my self a 120mhz Samsung PC monitor with the Nvidia 3D glasses, so I checked out what Gt5P looks like on 120mhz 1080p screen, and honest truth. Not one bit of difference.

I think the sensation of speed is fine in GT5P. The smoother the graphics the slower the game looks anyway. I remember going from GT2 to GT3 and thinking how slow GT3 seemed. Its just because it looks so much smoother there are less thing for your eyes to refference against.

Prior to trying this test, I thought my reaction times were good. But now that I find myself struggling to get under .3secs on this it is worrying. :(

Don't be unless your 20 years or younger. Since I play a lot of fast pace games (Burnout, lots of FPS) I did however get .193 secs on avg. But there's also a "trick" to this...

Don't focus on the dot, let your eyes unfocus and then react to the change.

Sorry for OT.

I hope you guys realize that having an average faster reaction time won't help you getting a better "sense of speed"....in fact it will decrease your "sense of speed".:D
