How to setup GT5 for amazing sound with a HT setup?

For those of you who have a complete 5.1 setup with receiver and at least a 5.1 surround sound speaker setup could you please tell me what settings to use to make the game its absolute best?

I have a Denon AVR-1712 receiver with HDMI in and out that can pass through HDMI audio. So when I go to my sound options in the game sometimes it says DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1 and now it says Linear PCM 5.1. I'm not sure what mode to use to get best sound?

Also should I set it to living room, small theater or large theater? My room is about 23x15 feet and I am running floor standing speakers for my FL and FR and bookshelf speakers for my rear with a dedicated center.

When I am racing in cockpit view, i can barely hear the cars that are close to me or next to me. It's very faint. This bothers me a lot because I like to get a sense of distance when driving to know if anyone is approaching.

I think the PS3 choose automaticly the best setting for each game.
In GT5 though, you got to go in the Option, select the Sound option, then choose what type of room your are in.

If possible, try to calibrate those speaker via the amp. My Sony reciever has an auto-calibrate fonction, which utilize a mic to calculate the distance of the speakers to the seating position.

Dont know if its much help but can do any better from here

my receiver has auto calibration as well and i already calibrated it. I just need to know the difference between the different settings such as living room, small theater, large theater and the DTS/DD/Linear PCM modes.

Thanks for you input though.

Make sure you have it on 5.1 small theater how many speakers do you have?

This requires you to first figure out what your receiver can handle in kHz, most common is 48kHz(DVD quality), many newer HT systems can output 96kHz and higher, this is mainly a frequency. Anyway once you figure what your system can handle, then you have to go into your PS3 sound settings and configure it (assuming you will use the HT system every time you use your PS3) deselect everything that is selected, there will be two setting that cannot be deselected(that's normal) check DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 and also LPCM 48kHz 5.1. While you're at it select LPCM 2.0, I think this is automatically selected and cannot be unchecked, you need this though.

You are selecting these because these are basic setting for most run of the mill HT systems and should work without any major changes or damaging your system. Now back to HDMI, if you are passing through your HT system then on to the TV, you might want to take note of switching to amp only audio when you use any sampling rate higher than 48kHz, you'll either damage those tv speakers or it will send a message that it cannot play the audio. Do not for any reason select sampling rates that are above what your machine can handle(fair warning as it will damage your speakers permanently).

Your PS3 will default to LPCM 5.1 48kHz for GT5(only if you have that selected in the sound options on the PS3), yes it will choose that over DD 5.1 not sure why but not really important. Once you set everything up, save your settings (only use sampling rates your HT system is compatible with 44.1kHz and 48kHz are the most common and everything supports that, I didn't mention 44.1kHz because it's CD quality sound...yes no point) now if you have a calibration mic for your HT system, this a perfect time to calibrate it, place the mic in the appropriate position from where you will be playing GT5 from and calibrate it. Once that is done, now it's time to fire up the amp and choose a sound field, not sure about the one you have but Sony HT systems actually lock in whatever the PS3 sends as the main output LPCM 5.1 will read as 3/2.1(L-C-R/SL-SR-Sub), most system should display what signal it's being sent anyway. Now once in GT5, head to options and go to sound scroll to the bottom to find the sound setting and choose your set up from the list. Now also select small theater(avoid using large theater, it's as bad as it sounds, like a movie theater sound, loud sounds are extremely loud and soft sounds are hard to hear, dumb setting if you ask me), exit to save your settings. Now listen for the sound output, grab a nice car and head to the track and just drive out onto the course and come to a complete stop, hold the brake and rev the engine and listen to see if it's loud enough for you. This will vary from car to car, some cars have quieter sounds than others. Anyway this should have you getting the best sound you can from your GT5 game.

GT5P supported DD, but there is no labeling on GT5 for DD support on the box at all.

Expanded dynamic range is ideal for movies. For games, it's more of a personal preference. I have mine set to small HT and it suits me fine (I also have a 5.1 setup). Multi-channel PCM should technically provide the best quality audio, but without knowing exactly what quality the source audio is being output from the game itself, it's difficult to tell for certain.
