How to use a paint chip without losing it, but rather gaining another

I don't know if anyone else has already figured this out and posted, but I haven't seen anyone, and I feel pretty sly about this so I thought I would share.
Here's the example:
I purchase a '97 Honda Civic which is Sana Fe Orange.
When I use the car ticket to take delivery, it gives me the car and the paint chip.
Then, I use the paint chip to paint a Saleen S7 that color.
Now I create a dummy account on my PS3 and make sure it is friends with my main account.
I gift the Honda Civic to this new account.
Then I log in under the new account, open GT5, take delivery of the car at which time it also gives me a paint chip of the color.
Then I gift both the car and paint chip back to my main account.
Log back into my main account.
Take delivery of the paint chip.
Then take delivery of the car, which in turn gives me another paint chip.
So I end up with my car back, the other car I wanted painted complete, and my one paint chip is now two!

I discovered this when I lent a car to a guy for a race, and when he returned it to me, I got my car back, plus another paint chip! He didn't send me the paint chip he received, but after I realized what happened I figured out you could do that as well and end up doubling your paint rather than losing it.

Yeah, I'm not really hung up on painting cars (unless they are really hideous) but I know some folks are really into it and that some colors, like chromes and mattes, are rare and hard to come by.

This is pretty cool, but I'm not happy until I find a way to get more silver chrome chips, I don't think there is a car in that color..

Yeah Neal pointed this out to me and I've used it a couple of times (a bit of a chore to be honest) although it only works with cars in the original colour I believe, once it's repainted it doesn't work, tried it with my chrome Shelby Cobra (so I can pretend it's polished aluminium)..........

On the subject of repainting, I found that some cars when repainted change their interior colour as well to a default setting presumably, which I found out unwittingly and it's something I really don't like.
It's just one interior colour (mostly a neutral one like grey or black) and it rather limits the paint options for some cars for me as I like certain interior colours but apparantly you can only have them with the original exterior colour.:grumpy:

You are correct about the car being it's original color.
I also found out that if you paint a car with stripes, it covers up the stripes.
I bought a Viper that was black with white stripes, and I wanted it to be blue with white stripes, so I painted it blue and the whole car turned solid blue. :(
It would be nice if they gave us a choice on striped cars and interior colors.

Yes and it also doesn't recognise two-tone colour schemes, I've wanted to paint one part of my Samba bus but it covers the entire body, would be much nicer to have the option for cars with stripes or two-tone paint schemes to have the choice to either keep that scheme or paint it entirely.
But the changing interior colour is what really bugs me right now, thing is on some cars it doesn't affect it whilst on others it does apparantly, a bit expensive in some cases to find out through trial and error...

And what's with the limited amount of wheels available (probably not the right thread to mention it but still)?

be forewarned! I did this with a friend to get a LFA matte Black paint chips, and the LFA got lost into oblivion when I gifted it back to him. -_- He basically lost his LFA. -__-

All this because Kaz doesn't want to add a simple color palette

That has nothing to do with the paint chip.
There have been intermittent servers problems, acknowledged by PD, that have caused lost transaction on gifting cars in any situation.
The only way to avoid it completely is not to trade or gift cars.

Well to be honest, I don't mind the "limited" possibilities of paints available on other cars as there's plenty to choose from, it's just the implementation of it which is seriously limited in several ways (the examples I mentioned above).
Ah well, at least we're not limited anymore to stock colours or cars coming only in one colour, I really love my "Giallo Fly" F40 for example (and the sections of the interior which were "Rosso Corsa" are changed into "Giallo Fly" as well which although perhaps logical still impressed me).

I've known this trick even before the game came out, back then it was my little theory on how to duplicate paint. :P

There is a HUGE difference between painting Premium Cars like your Lambo, and painting standard cars. With premium cars, you have access to any factory color for that car. With standard cars, there is ONLY ONE factory color available. E.g., The XJ-220 is rotten-vomit green. Did you want one the actual nice colors like uhm... Madiera Metallic? It is not available, and having one factory color from each of the 800 standard cars to paint over the vomit-green does NOT make up for it. I want an XJ-220 color on my XJ-220. I want a Mercury Cougar color on my Mercury Cougar.

How about the TVR's? They had some spectacular colors too, but you aren't going to get them either, and they aren't available on any other car. And as others have pointed out, the 2-tone colors, and racing stripes are a problem too.

This is one of the many areas where GT5 did not even live up to GT4.

I want chrome paint (._. )

Is the karting event the only way to get it? I won matte pink :yuck:

I got silver chrome paint, and i used it on my Skyline. I can't remember how i got it though. =/
__________
Question: Would i be able to duplicate the chrome paint by trading the Skyline to another account, and then trading back? I've already used the paint chip on the Skyline, and i've no idea how i got the paint chip.

(Skyline in chrome looks awesome, imo. :) )

I got a kinda nice pearlescent orange from my standard TVR 350C that i then used on a tuned beetle, but I was hoping I would get a paint chip with the Tuscan I was about to buy, like the idea of Reflex Purple or Reflex Spice on another car, though from what you are saying, you don't get one? (Actually I don't remember if you get a paint chip with a premium at all, been a while since I bought one and can't check right now as my Bob is grinding!)

Regarding two-tone schemes, we know that no one will see the same car come up in the used lot in different colours, but do those "fixed" colours vary from person to person? My Veyron colour is Black/Black, which implies I can never have it in the recognised two-tone design. That really sucks.

Absolutely agree. I liked how in GT4 all of the paint options for the cars were factory options. And you ALWAYS had ALL factory options available (for a nominal fee, of course).

Now, with this paint chip thing....... WTF?! Why???? Is the logic that when you buy a car, you magically "learn" how to paint another car with that color???!? OH, and when you "practice" what you've learned, then you lose that skill forever?!?! Why? I love the driving in this game.... but everything else is just..........

Myself and tursted friends do this on a daily basis for paint tickets, A car gets sent around in a large circle so that they can all receive a copy of the paints.

I now have the 'colourful' trophy and well over 300 paint tickets yet only one silver chrome still. Starting to get mattes I already had too now.

Yes, nice tip. You can also find a trusted friend, and gift the car to him. He will get the paint chip, and the car. Then he gifts it back to you, you get the car plus paint chip. Do this a couple of times, and you'll have plenty of chrome paint chips to trade! ;)

Chrome doesn't come on any car as far as I am aware, so chromes are still rare.

And what do we do with the paint chips? Yes, we paint the cars. Gift the car with the chrome paint and you get the car with the chrome paint + the chrome paint chip. Simple.

Nope, not simple. You only get the factory color paint chip when you trade a car, whether it's been painted or not.

I got a ford GT in red and when I tried to paint it black or silver it added stripes back both times!!! I wish there was a way to control stripe color and stripe or no stripe.

Yup, just tried it myself.
Painted my Gallardo in Chrome, sent to a friend, and he received a black paint.
Oh well.

Here's the method I use to build up a large supply of chrome paint chips.

1. Get a chrome paint chip.
2. Use the PS3 "Backup" utility (so you can save your game save).
3. Send chrome paint chip to a friend.
4. Restore your backup data (now you will have your chrome paint chip again).
5. Send another chrome paint chip to a friend. And just keep repeating steps 4-5(I send about 10 to a friend).
6. Then have that friend send you all the chrome paint chips you sent him.
Now you will have a bunch of chrome paint chips to paint several cars at once.

*The backup and restore process can take a long time depending on what is on your PS3's hard drive. I got rid of everything off of my PS3 except for my GT5 save file and the GT5 patch (don't install GT5, otherwise it's gonna take a long time to backup and restore each time). By doing this I can restore in about 11 minutes each time.

Obviously you could use this method for any paint chip, but chrome is the most rare.
