How to use a paint chip without losing it, but rather gaining another

Yeah when the paint you want is rare and the game save is copy protected. blame PD for that.
I'm guessing you will see this sign when entering PD's studio..

And you just discovered this yesterday?
For the past two weeks I've have six 'friends' who my LFA, FT-86 Concept, MNP GT-R or Tuscan Speed 6s go around whenever I want to do some painting.

Is there a limit on how many paint chips I can gift/be gifted each day?

Yes, it is five per day, the same as museum cards.

Is it possible to duplicate rare colours now that the copy-protect is lifted?

Ok, noob question, i just won silver chrome after buying a car (dunno how, unless i hit a milestone for number of cars), if i spray a car chrome do i only get to spray that 1 car chrome?

Yes!

And if you send it you don't get new chrome.

Save game data to USB stick.

Load up and send chrome (up to 5 at a time) to a secondary account or friend.

End game and reload from USB stick

Walla! Multiply chips like crazy.

That has nothing to do with the paint chip.
There have been intermittent servers problems, acknowledged by PD, that have caused lost transaction on gifting cars in any situation.
The only way to avoid it completely is not to trade or gift cars.

Just back up your save file BEFORE you send a gift car. Then if the car gets lost in the transaction, just restore the save file and try to send the car again the next day.

Take a look at the post date; there were issues back in December that PD definitely did recognize.

The whole paint chip issue is the main reason I have a secondary account (my main PS3 account, since my GT5 save is linked to my GTP_ account). I just use it to keep my most-used chips in stock, or purchase cars with it, paint them, then send over to my main with the restore trick.

Two things to keep in mind:

  • The OP's trick is much more time-consuming now with the one-car-per-console trade limit in effect. Since remote racing can typically net you comfortably more than a million a day, it's usually not worth it to use up 2 slots just to get a car back.
  • As has been mentioned in this thread, a gifted car will only give the recipient the original colour, not whatever post-purchase colour the old user has painted it.
