I am a car lover but cannot drive yet

I am 24, and I will know I will learn eventually (In the UK tests begin at 17), but I am still a student and still spend so much time studying, and plus I will be moving away in a few years to live in America (which is where I will probably do my test).

Having said all that, I do still love cars, I love looking at them, reading about them and playing racing games such as Forza and GT.

Does this make me strange?

Nah, I was a late-learner as well. It isn't common, but it happens.

You might be strange for other reasons. Why do you wear an afro?

In your spare time do this...get a plug in fan, a chair and a circular object that can imitate a steering wheel. Close your eyes and there ya go! You are driving...more or less :sly::dopey:

anyways good luck to you and you're not strange, if you were born in the U.S. people would find the situation strange. However, since you were not (from what I read), it is understandable, either way people have their reasons and you shouldn't worry what others may think.

Indeed you're not strange. I think it's common here to wait a few years after being allowed to take the driving test (age 18 here).

Not strange at all, numerous people I know are waiting until after college to take their tests (for a multitude of reasons, including insurance rates and student loan debt.)

I took mine a while ago, but barely drive due to the fact that I can bike to my work (and I usually do.)

I got my driving license 2 months ago, and I'm 19 now. It was more than 2 years (in Russia, learning can begin at 16, but the driving license is given since 18 only) of the time when I was thinking I don't have time for driving practice (I'm a student, too) and feeling just like you. But then I just came to driving school and started learning (I was 18 when I started).
And I still think I was at least 1 year late to pass the tests - I should do this just as I became able to... :)

P.S. And the only thing that makes me strange is that I wear a tank helmet. :D

Shame he's not here anymore, but you could have asked eminembeastfan for some driving tips... after all, he managed to tame the mighty Toyota Camry!

In American highschools, it's looked at as sort of a taboo not being able to drive. I don't know why it is. I got my license like 3 1/2 months before I turned 17. People were still giving out to me because I 'waited late' or 'didn't have a car'. I hate those kids now. Whatever. OP. Don't worry, you at least have the time to experience what it's like to first get behind the wheel by yourself.

I didn't start driving until I had to. Unlike racing games, driving IRL costs money.

Don't worry about the actual act of operating a vehicle, though. Chances are, if you're a car guy, you'll be a natural. You probably would already drive better than 20% of the people on the road anyway.

I didn't get a full license until I was 20 myself. You'll soon find out that driving on public roads isn't nearly as fun as racing on a track anyway, they're so different that it's understandable to love racing and cars but not really have much enthusiasm for driving in public. Lots of F1 drivers feel the same judging from various interviews.

Specially if you live in a big-ass city with loads of traffic. If you have a manual car you soon want an auto. After two months you don't want an auto, you want a chauffeur or pits of money for taxis.

These two comments. Save the racing for the track basically. Driving around other pathetic drivers is no fun.

I don't agree that. Say, if your car is an oldtimer, it's always fun to drive. On any speed. IMO.
Also, in my home country, which "has no roads, only directions", many people practice THIS kind of driving. It's both fun and safe (in most cases), and sometimes even necessary. :D

I waited until I was 17 until I drove anything other than around the block or in parking lots. I wanted a car, but had to borrow my parents, and I had very little money for insurance. SO, things haven't changed much.

The story goes that Graham Hill didn't even drive a car until he was 23, and passed his driving test the following year. Turns out, he wasn't a bad driver at all.

That isn't your typical city commute though! :P As for the car... no car is fun if you're stuck in rush hour traffic. Especially if you're driving a temperamental classic. Even if I was driving my dream car (a McLaren F1 by the way), I'd still be bored, possibly even more irritated. If you want fun at any speed you're better off cycling, and the best place to be in a car while going through a city is in the back seat with some headphones on. Back-country roads though, that's another matter entirely.

I'm 16 and love cars. I literally can't legally drive, it's normal. Even my dads boss (who owns an E-type) can't drive. He's 61 and has never bothered learning, even though he has an E-type Jeeeaaaaaaaaag.

That's nothing haha. This is how it is in my area if you want to go offroad:

Get your car dirty!!! haha

I'm a car lover and I haven't owned a car yet (only co-owned one with a couple of friends). And I'm going to be 28 later this year. That's pretty unusual I think.

I'm 26, started learning to drive ten years ago, and still haven't bothered to take the test. I'd say that's pretty weird. I'll probably get my license within the next few years though, it's getting to the point where I actually need a car.

I will be moving away in a few years to live in America
I highly advise against this. America is a bad place to live & it's spiraling downwards as I type this post. Stay where you are because it's better then here.

Let's not turn this into an America suxorz thread, thanks.

I took some lessons at 17, learned to drive, got my first car at 18. Never bothered to take the car test. Bought a motorcycle. That was 10 years ago. I still have no car licence and no intention of owning a car until I have kids. I still ride bikes. My wife has a licence but no car. I have never worried about the situation.

So, no need to worry. Driving is easy when once you get a bit of experience.

Oh, come on... :D Those pics were just a sample.

And ^this^ is not the limit, too. You should know that Russians prefer making off-road trucks instead of building roads for normal trucks. :sly:
There's even a game coming about them - SPiNTiRES, maybe you heard of it. :)

Spoil-t

Are you saying this because you're tired of immigrants and don't want anyone more to come? :D
(P.S. Sorry, I guess it's a bit off the topic).
