Yep, that's what title says. Yay! I bought red PS3 DS3 month ago from Amazon. I always take care my new controller, then this afternoon I accidentally snapped a left joystick insideout ring while I playing GT6. It never happening before to my 7 years old black DS3. My red DS3 buttons feels weird and weaker.

Is it just me or new DS3 feels cheap than before?

I couldn't say, as the newest DS3 I have came with my limited edition blue "Last of Us" PS3. What I do know is that the sticks are easily replaceable and very cheap. You can even get different colors to match, compliment or contrast the red.

My DS3s always break on me (PS3 owner since 2008), must have been through 5/6 and my triggers usually go first especially R2.

Are you sure it's not a cheap fake since it sure sounds like one?

This. Just because you got it from Amazon doesn't mean it's not fake, I myself managed to buy a fake X360 controller from Amazon many years ago.

I don't know if it is fake...

Here's my damaged DS3 pictures after month to played GT6:

Sorry if it too big picture for you...

I've never seen the color wear/peel like that on an authentic Sony controller.

Yeah, I noticed my 7 years old black DS3 less wear compare that month old red DS3. Should I send it back to Amazon, or buy new replacement DS3 case? Which easier way to do?

This is why I prefer buying controllers at the stores themselves, because you know that they're legitimate.

That controller seems like a knockoff with a Sony logo planted on it, and it would be best to return it. I'm not sure if Amazon would accept a return in the condition that it's in, however.

Are you able to take a picture of the big sticker on the underside? There should be all kinds of codes there. I'm not an expert but if it's faked they might use fake product codes and such too.

So much this.

Always stick to black controllers. I've found that all different-colored controllers feel cheap on your hands, like you could break them if you dropped them unlike the black ones.

I've used red, blue and the camo one from one of those FPS games and while they look cool, they don't feel as sturdily well made as the black ones.

I don't have a car to drive.. That's why I always order on online

I chatted on Amazon, They said Nope, but one time exception under condition.
Code:
Hello,
Here's a copy of the chat transcript you requested:

Initial Question: Can Amazon accept the damaged condition?

10:23 AM PDT Katie(Amazon): Hello, my name is Katie. I'll be happy to help you today.
I'm so sorry that your controller is damaged - did it arrived damaged when you received it?
10:24 AM PDT Joshua : No.
10:25 AM PDT Katie(Amazon): Okay, we will accept the return of items that arrived to you in damaged condition, but if it became damaged after you received it, we're not able to issue a refund or replacement for that. What exactly is wrong with it?
10:27 AM PDT Joshua : left joystick on case chipped.
10:29 AM PDT Katie(Amazon): Okay, if it didn't arrive in that condition, we can't accept a return for a full refund, but as an exception, I will offer you a $5 promotional credit, which will just automatically discount your next Amazon sold item that you order. Would that be okay?
10:31 AM PDT Joshua : Can i send proof picture of damaged?
10:33 AM PDT Katie(Amazon): I'm not able to receive pictures, but if the item arrived in that condition, we can accept a return for a refund. If the item became damaged after you received it though, we cannot offer a refund for that, as items must be returned to us in the same condition as they were received.
10:34 AM PDT Joshua : OK.
10:34 AM PDT Katie(Amazon): So was it already chipped when you received it, or did it become chipped after it had been opened?
10:38 AM PDT Joshua : I opened it and always take care my new controller 3 weeks then it happen.
10:40 AM PDT Katie(Amazon): Okay, so if you cause damage to an item, we will not typically accept a return of the item. As a one time exception though, I will help you return it to us for a full refund. The return window is almost over though, so it needs to be dropped off with UPS by this Tuesday in order to get that full refund. Here is your prepaid return label:
10:41 AM PDT Katie(Amazon): I do want to stress that this is a one time exception, and in the future, if an item becomes damaged after you receive it, we will not be able to accept a return at all.
10:44 AM PDT Katie(Amazon): Is there anything else I can do for you today?
10:45 AM PDT Katie(Amazon): Sorry, I don't mean to rush you but we've been idle for 3 minutes, and I want to make sure our chat's still connected. If you aren't able to respond in 2 minutes, we may be disconnected.
10:46 AM PDT Joshua : densidad that, I dont want sead it back
10:47 AM PDT Katie(Amazon): If you want to receive a full refund of an item, you must return it to us. If you prefer not to return it, I can still offer you that $5 promotional credit instead, to discount your next order.
10:48 AM PDT Joshua : no thank.. i keep my controller
10:48 AM PDT Katie(Amazon): Okay, I'll go ahead and issue you that $5 credit then, so that you can receive a discount on your next order. Is there anything else I can do for you today?
10:48 AM PDT Joshua : ok
10:49 AM PDT Joshua : Bye thank you
10:49 AM PDT Katie(Amazon): You're welcome! Thanks for allowing me to assist you. I hope you have a great day!

Yeah, agreed with you Coxis. My old black DS3 is " destroyed" .

Take a look at this and see how yours compares. Seems like a good way to tell if it's fake is if the reset button hole actually has a button inside it, but that's not the only tell. See if you can get a better photo so that we can read the back, it's too blurry as it is.

I just bought a new DS3... it feels the same as always. I hate to say it OP, but I think this is possibly a fake from the description and pictures.

Contact Amazon again and tell them you think it's a fake product, put the ball firmly into their court. I don't know how Distance Selling Regulations work in the US or how you paid for it... in the UK you'd be covered for a full refund in law and, potentially, via your payment method.

I tried to look at that pic but my eyes hurt. I'm also pretty sure any official Dualshock 3, regardless of color, have black labels.

*edit* Okay, maybe not. Seems the Deep Red and Hot Pink ones have a silver label instead!

Real or fake, I'd be shocked either way. I've destroyed many controllers when I used to play(fault of Call of Duty, not me), but I've never done that on official PS3 or X360 controllers. I also applied a lot of force breaking my controllers(because of violent video games, not me). If one is being responsible handling one of those things, I can't see it chipping away like that.

At least Amazon's replacing it, so that's good. 👍

That's just it, I have four Sony controllers... A black, limited edition blue, pink and the red one. It seems to me that the color is actually the color of the plastic, so there isn't anything to peel. I've also built several custom 360 controllers where the color is layered on rather than molded in, and even they have never peeled or chipped in any way. That tells me the one the OP has is a cheap knock-off.

Thanks to little brother for better picture...

I have an official one of the same colour and the same happened to me. I know it was real as I bought it from a games shop in my town. here is a pic so it is possible even with the real thing.

EDIT: Its a bit dusty as I keep it as a backup in case my current DS3 fails.

Here's interesting guide... the top search on Google for that model number ends in "fake" :)

On the basis of that guide the label seems genuine, but I have to say that the casing looks pretty shoddy by Sony standards. Note to self, never by a red DS3 :D

Wow, I am be damned. It's officially real DS3. *sigh* It look like to buying another new DS3 again, or buy new replacement DS3 case.

I'd really be tempted to argue it wasn't fit for purpose... the case is supposed to lock the movement. It was either defective or unfit by design. In the UK you have an automatic 2 year warranty on products, this case would be more complex due to (presumably) the counter-assertions of excessive use/wear/tear, but you can easily cite many other models in the same form that have operated in similar conditions for years without breaking.

I don't know how US law protects you though :(

I found it out about SCEA Warranties: http://us.playstation.com/support/warranties/ps3/index.htm

What if Sony used the cheap material on DS3 controller, is that my fault to break my controller vod warranty?

Tough one, and you're complaining at-a-distance too, someone from the US will have to advise further I'm afraid :\

Try searching for other people complaining about the same thing, see if you can find out what they did?

I still use my non rumble SIXAXIS which came with my PS3 in 06. Solid as a rock and no wear whatsoever.

I reckon further into production (after a few years) like most companies they may have started to skimp on the plastic and quality, you even notice it on the different generations of the PS3 itself. For the price they ask for those controllers its unacceptable, the OP's one does look real as far as I can tell.

Also bear in mind its a known fact that different colours of plastic have different levels of robustness due to the die affecting it's chemical nature. Like why red plastic fades and goes brittle in Sun much faster than other colours (excluding white).

This, 100%.

Also +1 on the original Sixaxis. I still have it and works almost perfectly, save for squeaky joysticks.

The two black DS3s I have are still in great shape despite lots of use.

I've broken my fair share of DS3's. Not because they're weak, mind you. I have severe gaming-related anger issues.

My total controller count is 7. Broke an X-Box controller, two Logitech controllers, and 4 DS3's.

Didn't even know that was possible... unless it is Wal-Mart's display controller!

However, with my PS2 and PS3, the original controllers always lasted the longest! I swear by the brand new black controllers..
