Alright, I need some advice. I want a digital camera in the worst kind of way. I was curious to see if you guys had any advice for someone that wants a good camera, but doesn't want to spend a fortune. I am in no way a professional photographer, and do not plan to be one. I just want a good camera that is going to allow me to get good pictures in any type of situation.

Thanks guys!

3 megapixle cameras should get you decent resolution for 800x600 images, POSSIBLY 1028x768. I'd rather go 4 or 5 megapixles, and I'd choose an Olypus, but that doesn't sound like you since you don't want to spend a lot on a camera. I suppose if you want really good images, the best thing to do is get a good manual 35mm, then you can scan up the whazoo...

That's what I did. Digital cameras of the quality I was interested in were out of reach so I got a Minnolta SLR. I'm very happy with it and I just get the pics burned to a disk when I get them developed. You also have way better prints than you'd ordinarily get with a digital. I have a digital camera but it's a piece of crap and I hate it.

3MP is going to be around 2,000px X 1,500px - also known as larger than any reasonable desktop resolution.

Now if you'd like to print some stuff, that'll get you good 5" x 7" prints. I would suggest getting the highest megapixels you can afford.

I am going to purchase the Sony DSC-P10 in June when it becomes available. It is a 5MP camera about the size of a standard cellphone. The Sony Memory Stick format now supports huge capacity (1GB!! ... @ $650 ...) but I'm going to get a 256MB stick for roughly $130. This particular camera also has a Lithium rechargable battery, so that's cool. The camera itself is going to be $500, and I'll get a dinky bag and an extra battery too. All together I'll probably spend $750.

What's your price range?
What do you want to use the camera for?

"I just want a good camera that is going to allow me to get good pictures in any type of situation." --- That's what too broad to give advice on. I'd recommend the Canon EOS D1s. It's 11MP and costs $7,000 (:

The Canon EOS D1s is actual a digital SLR (single lense reflex), which is like ... a real camera (: It also has the Canon lense mount so you can use all those interchangable lenses like a 500mm telephoto, or more.

I'm looking for about 200 camera. It sounds like a good digital is out of reach. I recently got a really good offer for a 3.2mp, is that good? Or should I look into getting a 35mm?

I am also thinking about taking a photography class, you think I should get a 35mm just because I plan on taking that class? How much extra is it to get your pictures burned onto a disk?

Actually Loud Music, on paper the camera looks wonderful, but it was a big flop by canon especially with the EOS 10D - that costs only around $1500 compared to the $4000 that the 1d was going for. If you can run into them the D60 is also a better camera for the price
