Hello guys,

I've recently stumbled across the fact that there finally is a version of Cyanogenmod available for my phone (Samsung Galaxy S4 Value Edition). So I thought "Hey, it's finally out! Why not install it? Can't be too hard."

Well, it is (at least for me, haha). I've went through the web and got me everything I need: Odin (for rooting purposes), the custom ROM, GApps, the recovery image. Everything in a .zip format of course, the files are on my PC. I started with the rooting bit. Piece of cake, phone was rooted in no-time. Now I'm struggling with putting the recovery on my phone. Most websites say that TWRP Recovery is recommened, so I downloaded it. I put the recovery image on my phone, but TWRP won't find it. Although I can clearly see that the file is on my phone.

Maybe there is someone here on GTP who can help me out with it or even guide me through the rest of the process? Thanks in advance.

Hey, I've so far rooted, added a recovery and custom ROMs to 3 phones now, all throughout a few years, so I'm no expert... unfortunately phones tend to have different processes, especially before installing a recovery for the first time. Having said that, I have had a certain amount of success using ROM installers from the Android Market... I've used TWRP manager, ROM Installer and Rashr - Flash tool. I'd recommend you try them in that order, though ROM Installer asks you to pay for certain operations. In these apps you just select the phone you have and let them attempt to install the recovery. Once TWRP is installed, backing up and installing new custom ROMs is a breeze. :)

I have CM 13 on my Moto X2 and I love it.

Hmm, might try it when I'm home later. But creating a backup before flashing the recovery is necessary, or? If I have problems flashing TWRP via Odin, I'll let you guys know, maybe one of yoi can help me out a bit. I'm pretty much a noob in terms of doing such stuff to phones, lol.

When I put cyanogenmod on my old Tab II I had to use ODIN.
Samsung bootloaders and their recovery is a royal pain in the ass.

There should be a step by step guide on the cyanogen mod for your phone.

Alright, currently backing up my phone. For safety reasons, I'mma put everything manually on my computer aswell. I'll let you guys know how the process is getting along.

EDIT: Finally flashed TWRP on my phone. Currently backing everything up there.

Uh oh. I successfully flashed TWRP and backed the phone up. Also restored it. But now, my phone won't boot properly. A soon as it's booted into the lock screen, it immediately shuts down.

Go into the bootloader mode, plug into the PC and flash again.
Make sure it is the correct ROM for the phone, make sure TWRP is correctly installed and patched.

Well, it is the correct TWRP version. But I didn't flash CM13 yet. Maybe I just need to follow the left steps of wiping the phone and then flash CM13 and GApps?

Try factory resetting through TWRP. So long as TWRP is working though (and, really, Sammy's in generaly are fairly "safe" to do that sorta messing with anyway), you're not really in much danger of permanently screwing anything up.

Welcome to the beautiful world of custom ROMs! My most heartfelt advice: always, always do a full back up of your phone when updating your phone, even if it's a minor nightly update. Go into TWRP, backup, select the boot, system and data partitions and back it up. If you have a USB OTG cable and a FAT32 formatted flash drive, you can back up directly to it, but you need to mount it first via the mount menu.

Thanks @Coxis! :)

I have some problems though. First, the GApps weren't installed. I've downloaded the GApps, they should be the right version. I tried to flash them onto my phone, but the installation always led to an installation error. Can I still flash them now, although I've already installed CM13? Also, sometimes the screen won't rotate.

Try downloading a different GApps package. As for the screen not rotating, those bugs are to be expected in custom ROM's that aren't stable yet. (I'm assuming that the ROM that you've installed is still in Alpha)

I'm a bit confused why it's taken this long for CM to come to your phone. From what I've seen, the specs to the S4 Value Edition are identical to the standard S4, meaning that ROM's for that should work on your device. Unless some of the parts are different, of course.

As far as I can see now, I've downloaded the right package. But, whenever I try to flash the .zip, TWRP says this: Insufficient storage space available in System partition. You may want to use a smaller Open GApps package or consider removing some apps using gapps-config. See: '/external_sd/open_gapps_log.txt' for complete details and informaiton.

I have 4 GB of free storage on my internal storgae and TWRP still says I have not enough? Come on, how big can these GApps really be?

The System partition is not the same as the general storage one. Think of it more like the hidden recovery partition on your computer hard drive. Try one of the more barebones GApps packages to see if one of those works.

Hmmm. So, if I get this right: is there a specific partition where I have to flash the .zip from? And regarding the GApps packages, the package I've downloaded is 567MB big. Here's the link to the site I got it from: http://opengapps.org/. I've downloaded the ARM 6.0 Stock pack.

No. TWRP handles that automatically itself. But it doesn't flash everything to the pool of space that you have when you start putting music or whatever on your phone. It flashes it to the System partition established by I believe the device manufacturer. Did you reset the phone through TWRP or through the OS? If the former, Advanced Wipe or just Factory Reset? Because you might have accidentally installed CM over the top of the original ROM, which would have understandably chewed up most of the space in the System Partition.

Regardless, personally, when I screwed around with CM when I had my Droid 4, I always used the Micro package. Then I just went into the Play Store after it was done setting everything up and installed by hand that I wanted (Hangouts, YT, etc.). That way you avoid the Play Music/Bookstore/Video/Newstand etc. bloat if whatever ROM you installed already comes with music or video players, or you have your own preferred eBook reader.

Okay, I see. And yup, I did an Advanced Wipe, deleting both Caches and making a Factory Reset.

I'll use that one then, I'll give you an update on how that works. 👍

You could also try wiping System, if one of the smaller GApps packages also don't work. It's possible (unlikely, but possible, especially if this is an unofficial or test release of CM) that your CM build didn't do so automatically, at which point all the stuff you did wipe wouldn't have changed that the original ROM was still installed and CM installed over the top of it.

Well. Seems like I got the complete Cluster:censored: now. The GApps were successfully flashed (used the Micro package), but after the reboot, there are constantly pop-up messages appearing that either say Setup Guide stopped working or Google Play Services stopped working. Meh.

Edit: Now it's just the Setup Guide stuff.

Boot into TWRP, Factory Reset, then Advanced Wipe System, Cache and Dalvkik Cache. Then install CM again and try again with GApps. The full one should work then, but I would go with the Micro anyway.
