I had the idea to get GT5 despite skipping it before. I had issues with my wheel working as I felt it should with the ps3 so I played Forza 3-4 during this period. Now I am enjoying Gt6 quite a bit and wonder if it would add to the experience. Also, does anyone know if Gt5 has the sharpen feature that can help with frame rate (if needed) ? I find it is needed for gt6 to my eyes. How is the frame rate in general vs Gt6 ?

1. Yes, GT5 has Sharpen/Flicker reduction
2. Frame rate is better than GT6
3. Yes, you should get GT5 XL, it's only like $15. When you do, Try your hardest to get the Jensen Interceptor from 1970, which will be in the used car dealership. Greatest/funnest car that isn't in GT6. Plus, you'll be exposed to the Course Maker, which is endless fun.

GT5 has absolutely no road feel, kind of like a dead feeling for road surface like iRacing has. GT6 may not be prefect either that way but is a lot better than GT5. I always found too that there is no cornering loads/etc and generally with that added to GT6 can not see myself going back to the numbness of GT5. I also always found that GT5 felt like there was too much steering lock and no matter what I did I could never get rid of it. That last was my biggest peeve with GT5 to be honest and just the improvement in feel for GT6 alone makes it worth the money.

Are you using a wheel ?

GT5 On-line servers being turned off sometime in May I think I read somewhere here on GTPlanet.

GT5 is a definitely must buy ... some things are still better in GT5 ... and above all I think, because the price is very low, you should test it yourself and draw up your own opinion about it ...
I still go back to GT5 weekly ... still have a few golds to achieve ... 4 cups to go ...

I also go back to GT5 to compare stuff to GT6 ... to feel if something is improved or just feels different ...

(I've played well over 2000 hours in GT5 ... and about 100 in GT6 now ... )

by-the-way: You don't nééd online to enjoy GT5 ...

GT5 is the better game overall at this moment in time imo. Buy it, play it, & when you're done, GT6 should've been updated & have many more added features.

Skip it. Unless you're ready for a HUGE update download, I'd skip it. Even if you're playing on or offline, there were many physic changes as well as new additions that didn't come until later so updating would be a must!

All of these guys saying "get it" are already updated so for them it's a non-issue, but for someone new why waste that download on an obsolete game? Don't get me wrong, I played GT5 for 3 years pretty religiously but to go back, no chance.

The updates won't take too long if the poster has a decent internet and anyway you can just leave it running while at work/studying/on toilet etc. The physics aren't quite as good but it's still a great game in my opinion. Admittedly for 3 years most of the playing I did was online but even if you don't use that it's worthwhile for the various races.

It's what you make of it. If the poster only gets it to rush through it using overpowered cars on racing soft tyres then enjoyment will be limited. Take your time and set challenges in each race by using lower pp and tyres than most of the opposition. Try it using abs off if you have a wheel. The physics change with abs off.

I too have skipped GT5. The only thing that stops me from purchasing it is the "large update". I think it would take days just to download it and of course what if the connection suddenly cuts out? I think PD should make it downloadable in background.

In my opinion, GT5 is a much better game with a deeper experience and more varied gameplay- at least as far as GT6 sits now, updates for it notwithstanding.

GT6 may improve in rhe future with further downloads and areas of play.

Good point! However, if @turdhat has a great download speed & the time to spare in order to do it, I think it would be worth it.

Also, if he buys the GT Academy Edition (XL Edition in the US), that comes with several downloads already on the disc, not to mention free DLC.

Yes. Because you can call gt6 a early accsess game. I got gt5 Academy Edition today, so i can drive as much i want, like Seasonal Events and such :) Installing update 2.15 now, 227 MB + a lot more smaller ones  But it took not longer than 20 minutes :)

Why has nobody mentioned arcade mode?

This is what I always do:
-Professional difficulty
-At this point, I select a course maker circuit (Come on GT6), or Circuit de la Sarthe
-Nissan Schulze Motorsport '11 / Formula Gran Turismo / Nissan Motul Autech GT500 '08
-I select a number of laps so the race lasts 1.5 - 2 hours
-All aids off
-Real grip loss
-At race menu, I make a few tweaks to the Time change and weather, I select start race and turn off almost all HUD (I just leave water on surface %, position, lap, total time and lap time)
- Do not try so hard to overtake

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think I will pick it up. I have a 30 meg per second download so no worries about the updates. I use a Fanatec Gt2 wheel BTW. I expect the settings to be about the same from what I have read.

I hope you enjoy your GT5! :D

Thx ! Any suggestions about settings for the wheel and in game or should I just expect my Gt6 settings to work ?

If you use ABS on 0 beter put it to 1 in GT5 ... That's all I guess

Just about the only thing that's worth something is shuffle racing. Everything else is better in GT6, if you ask me. But as GT5 is pretty cheap by now it might be worth to buy it just for that. Just keep in mind that the GT5 servers are closing within a few months (May?) and that'll be the end to shuffling as we know it. Unless GT6 has got it by then, of course.

I have had GT5 (Academy Edition) for just over a year but had to start a new save a week before GT6 release....up to that point I had completed about 85% of it and about 300 hours of play. I played GT6 exclusively until I got 100% ( midway through January as restarted my game) and since then I have been playing both games every day (a couple of hours a day doing WRS Time Trialling and the odd RB Champ on GT6 and a couple of hours doing anything on GT5). My opinion on where GT5 is better than GT6 (therefore making it worth getting):

- Seasonal Races, Ferrari Formula 1 Races, Formula GT races, Endurance Races, more Rally Events, harder licences, more content (it's a basically complete game so it's understandable), harder Special Events (versus Missions and Coffee Breaks), insanely harder Vettel Challenges.

Just a few points that I feel are important to know when considering buying GT5. I would definitely recommend buying GT5, especially as it is a pretty cheap price now. I only use a DS3 controller so I struggle with some things but you should be a lot better given you have a wheel. Frankly, GT5 is worth the money just for the Seasonal events, special missions, Formula GT races, Ferrari Formula 1 races and the overall greater difficulty and more content (not to mention proper endurance races). I haven't mentioned Online as I don't use it but I would guess GT5's online is not very populated (it is better than GT6 from what I hear). Finally, bear in mind that the online servers for GT5 will be discontinued in May (not sure if the seasonal events will disappear or not). Oh, and a final thought:

GT6 has all cars available to buy straight away....GT5 has the Used Car Dealership (there are only about 30 dealers to buy new cars from) which shows 6 new cars after every race is entered (or licence test entered) but some cars rarely appear in it (I have been trying to get the Chapparal 2J in it for the last 3 weeks or so and it has refreshed about 100 times or so before appearing) so can be a bit frustrating.

If you do go ahead and get it, definitely check out the GT5 section of this site as I have found it invaluable for tuning sheets, recommended cars for events or just for the best way to get the UCD to refresh quickly. GT5 also still has new seasonals every week (time trials and race events alternating weekly).

Oh, as for updates when you get the game, if you buy the Academy Edition (or XL from what others have said they are the same), the update is not majorly large....from what I remember it took me about an hour or so to download the updates and I only have a 6MB connection (max download of about 800kb/sec).

I hope some of all that has convinced you even more that it is definitely worth buying

career mode & seasonal events are worth it
plus you have ferarri formula 1 cars!
the UCD might be a pain to find cars but if you get it before servers close down you can borrow cars from your friends to do the events so its all good

I loved GT5, but to me GT6 feels like (mostly) everything in GT5 plus quite a bit more. The menus in GT5 are far more hateful and I found the course maker colossally disappointing. So I don't miss anything in GT5, and I think starting over in career mode after playing GT6 wouldn't be fun.
