I want to buy a new car (2nd hand but new to me).

At first I wanted a Calibra, but I thought that would be too expensive to run.

Does anyone know anything about the old style MR2? I just want to make sure that I'm not going to buy a car that will be broken down 60% of the time!

Cheers,

Cheers,

personaly I think its a really good car. I loved driving my cousins. Thing was little, and wanted to move. He beat the crap outta that car and it still kept going.

Based on his, I would say yes, get it!

A friend at work has one, she loves it as well!

They have a great following here in Canada and the States, so the stock ones are reliable. There should be some aftermarket goodies that you can snare where you are...

These cars are GREAT fun to drive... To bad I don't fit well into one... 6'4"

Are we talking about the old square 1.6 job?

The motor's a very close relative of the old Twin Cam Corolla motor (the good one) and its Toyota componentry, so you shouldn't have any issues.

The big problem you're going to have is to find one that hasn't been:
- thrashed
- modified
- crashed

I would strongly suggest you test drive one first, and if you do buy one, do some driver training as they can be a bit naughty (being mid-engined and all).

They are a hoot to drive though.

you could get an Elise .....last time i checked they are quite go-kart like ......i'll bet everybody has them in the UK so you're probaly sick of them though.....North America doesn't have them .......it's the same way with the Skyline, as well as 911 GT3's and others ......i would love an Elise though, as long as my 6'3" frame could fit in it

I somehow doubt our friend is playing in that price range...

oh i don't know .....i was just thinking he could get a used one because i figured the Calibra is a fairly costly car as well ....i don't know what used Elise's go for used (96 or 97)

Well, the MR2 when new would have been about a third of the cost of the Elise when new, and I think they stopped making that shape in around 92 - 93? (I'm guessing here).

nevermind .....he said the Calibra would probably be too expensive to run

Bear in mind that

a) I'm not loaded with cash (£3000 budget MAX)
b) I'm 21 with 1 year's no claims
c) I'd like to keep running costs to a minimum (within reason)

Cheers guys,

Cheers guys,

I still say stick to the MR2... ignore everyone in here, we all have rich blood.

Reality says MR2! ;)

Either '89, '90 or '92.

A honda CRX is on the cards also.

I've heard that the Mk2 can spin out (unrecoverabily) but the Mk1 handles like it's on rails.

I think I'll chuck a few emails at the international owners club (http://www.mr2.net)

Well, it's all done and dusted.

The new love chariot will be a 1988-1992 Honda CRX 1.6 (non-VTEC).

I should have a nice wedge of cash left over to do some work on it (and being a honda, the build quality will be sweet.)

As soon as it looks spanking, I'll put some pics up.

They're a great little car - fantastic record in production car racing here.

I figured that the MR2 wouldn't be a great idea, with it being my first car with any guts the fact that it's mid-engined might end up with me being in a hedge, or worse.

I've seen some awesome custom jobs on the CRX too.

check out http://www.89crx.com

I used to like the CRX and Del Sol, untill, some people around Calgary did some "upgrades" to them, made them look like crap, and turned me off them completely...

The look awesome when done properly though...
